A friend of mine is trying to find a book:
"I read a book a long time ago about a young knight and his peasant squire. The knight is a huge toolshed and in the twist at the end, he dies. Like in the last four pages. Suddenly, you realize the book's about the squire. I think the title had some dichotomy of light/dark and something about hawks or falcons. I may have misremembered the plot somewhat, but I remember my shock at the end and want to find it and read it again."
She read it about 14 years ago. Any help would be great!

Sounds like "Wings of a Falcon" by Cynthia Voigt. It's actually part of a loosely connected series if your friend is interested.
