This thread is for everyone to rank the 2012 Booker Prize novels they have read so far. Anyone who has read at least one longlisted book is eligible to vote. Please submit your rank order by 1200 hours Eastern Standard Time in the US (1700 hours GMT), so that I can count the votes and announce a winner in advance of the actual award announcement, which will be held later that evening.

The Lighthouse
Skios
Narcopolis
The Garden of Evening Mists

Best first
(I know that Skios did not make it to the final shortlist)

The Lighthouse is my 1 st choice for the Booker, even though I've only read one other, The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry, which did not make the shortlist.

My personal ranking for now is

Bring Up the Bodies
The Garden of Evening Mists
The Lighthouse
Narcopolis
Swimming Home.

I am reading both The Garden of Evening Mists and Umbrella and if nothing exceptional happens in their 2nd halves that makes me change my mind, I'd rank Umbrella 2nd and *Garden* between *Lighthouse* and Narcopolis.

Edit Oct 10th: finished *Evening Mists*, it is now on #2.

Well, I was trying to finish The Garden of the Evening Mists in time to rank it, but it doesn't look like that will happen. But I'm certainly loving what I've already read! Of the books I've read, I'd rank them this way (though I suspect that Bring up the Bodies won't actually win).

1) Bring up the Bodies (So far, I'm placing GotEM above Narcopolis)
2) Narcopolis
3) Skios
4) The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry

Unfortunately I didn't make any progress in reading any of the long- or shortlisted books this month, as I got bogged down in attempting to read Umbrella, the only shortlisted book I haven't read yet. I'm going to rank Umbrella, based on what I read of it, along with the other 7 novels that I did finish:

1. The Garden of Evening Mists
2. Bring Up the Bodies
3. Umbrella
4. The Lighthouse
5. Philida
6. The Yips
7. Narcopolis
8. Swimming Home

Oh dear... I love these kind of pools but have only read Bring Up the Bodies from the list. If I was betting on a winner, based on reviews, my thoughts on the judges' quirky (trying to be polite) choices in past years, and impulse just off the top of my head, I would go with Narcopolis.

I've only read Bring Up the Bodies and The Garden of Evening Mists but I would give the edge to BUTB. I think it, however, unlikely that the judges would award Mantel another Booker.

I have only read The Lighthouse but based on the LT talk, I reckon Garden of Evening Mists is going to win.

It is already the 16th here in NZ, so I am getting impatient to find out who has won! (as are the authors Id say, with that prize money and all those accolades a waiting!)

1. The Garden of Evening Mists. Finished today. 5 stars.
2. Bring Up the Bodies. 4.5 stars.

So far the votes are as follows:

The Garden of Evening Mists: 3 votes
Bring Up the Bodies: 2 votes
Umbrella: 2 votes (including one vote from brenpike)
The Lighthouse: 2 votes
Narcopolis: 1 vote

I think this relatively split vote is a testament to the quality of the books on this year's shortlist. I wouldn't be surprised if any of the first four books was chosen as the winner, and IMO all five are vastly superior to all but two of the books from last year's longlist, namely The Sense of an Ending and The Stranger's Child.

Looks like Bonnie, Rachel and Nathalie are the winners in the guessing game!
Dont you just wish you got the Booker prize money too!??!

Lightening does strike twice. Congrats to those who ignored conventional wisdom and voted it first!
