I was bored at work (NOT something that happens often, I must say) and was trolling the Amazon site and saw two David McCullough books I don't have. So I clicked.

Brave Companions: Portraits in History
Mornings on Horseback: The Story of an Extraordinary Family, a Vanished Way of Life and the Unique Child Who Became Theodore Roosevelt

I'm excited. Can't wait for them to arrive.

I am new to LibraryThing, will try to keep up!! I thought I was quite a fast reader until I began looking through all the messages and the amount everyone reads, well done to you all. Work and family just get in the way sometimes! :o)

I have a very long wish list, but at the moment I am half way through Searching For Schindler, Tom Keneally.
Couldn't decide whether to read this one first, or Schindler's List, but decided on the research and making of the book and film first.

With summer on the way (I live in New Zealand) I won't have those early winter nights to read but will do my best, may have to have a break from the garden and spend more time sitting on the deck!!

Stopped at the Habitat for Humanity Resale store on the way home...and discovered that a pile of Louis L'Amour books had been donated!

I tried to guess which ones I didn't have, not terribly successfully, so I'm going back first thing in the morning.

Then when I got home, I discovered that my father had sent me some more Louis L'Amour books he'd found second hand as well! (like father, like daughter)

The take:

Utah Blaine/Silver Canyon (combined in one volume)
Hills of Homicide
Over on the Dry Side
End of the Drive
Big Medicine
Education of a Wandering Man
The Louis L'Amour Companion
Beyond the Great Snow Mountains
May There Be a Road
Taggart
Mojave Crossing
Lando
Lonely on the Mountain
How the West Was Won
The Tall Stranger
To Tame a Land

plus my father also sent these:

Bowie's Mine by Elmer Kelton
Three-Ten to Yuma by Elmore Leonard
Riders of the Purple Sage by Zane Grey
The Drift Fence by Zane Grey

And that doesn't include the ones that were duplicates, like Treasure Mountain and Crossfire Trail.

Ahhh....

Non-Louis L'Amour and/or western books I got were The Black Moon and Warleggan by Winston Graham, and a copy of The Black Stallion and Satan, which I'd been wanting as I'm trying to reread the series despite the local library missing a number of the books.

I keep telling myself no more books.

But when I went by the library like a good girl, I took a quick peak at the FOL shelf.

And for $1 I came home with this little gem from 1966:

The Sinister Garden: A Guide to the Most Common Poisonous Plants

Mmmm ... I need it so I know which ornamentals to keep the horses away from, right??

But mostly I just liked the creep factor of it. :-)

Nov 25, 2012, 10:32 pm

The Book Barn in Niantic is beyond description. Not only for the books bit it's also extremely user friendly. There are bencheas all over the place-they have a lot of outdoor stalls-and places to sit in the barn itself. So I came home with the following:
Playing with Boys by Alisa Valdes-Rodriguez;
Possession by A S byatt;
Make Him look Good by AlisaValdes-Rodriguez;
Can you keep a secret by Sophie Kinsella;
Faith by Jennifer Haigh;
The dirty social girls club by Alisa Valdes-Rodriguez;
Wedding Belles by Haywood Smith;
Death Comes to Pemberly by P d James; and
The Master by Colman Toobin
There were so many others I would have gotten but once I realized the books were going to Brooklyn I needed to show some restraint

#47 LOL fuzzi. It is such a fun place and the staff is very welcoming. There are cats in the main barn. And lots of stalls on the grounds that are full of books. It's very well organized and they buy books too. It's not that close to where my friends live so we can't go there that often but there are other places

I'm on The Angel of Darkness by Caleb Carr and so far just as good as The Alienist. Also threw in a quick read of Black Bird, Vol. 1 by Kanoko Sakurakoji last night. My first Manga ever and found it quite good. I'll probably continue that series.

Okay, okay! I'll check out Asher Lev this weekend.

I'm stalled on the James Herriot bio, and I'm not sure. It's quite readable. Just not in the mood, I guess.

#108...Molokai was a fabulous book!! It's a very emotional ride, and it paints beautiful images in your head of Molokai and Hawaii that you will never be rid of. It's a hard idea to wrap your head around, that they shipped people, including children, off to basically a deserted island for the rest of their lives.
Anyway, hope you enjoy it as much as I did!
