Bold indicates books that I've read.
Italics are books that I am reading or started to read once upon a time.
Underline are books that I own.
Also, what the hell is with the complete lack of Shakespeare, Marlowe, Chaucer, Homer, or any other classics that have basically re-written the way we look at stories?
Half the effin' Rabbit Run crap is on here, but not a single sonnet by Shakespeare?
No Bible, Qu'ran, Talmud? Books that have, for centuries, defined how half the world lives?
Hate them if you want, but how can you expect to understand half the works on this list if you haven't read the books that influenced their very existence?

Well, Shakespeare and Homer and religious texts are all very deserving books, but I really like the fact that the 1001 list focuses mainly on novels. There's the odd short story, but besides A Modest Proposal, I think all of the works on the list are fictional, so with the religious texts, at least, they'd be very out of place.
The topic of which books should have been (or shouldn't have been) included on the list is always an interesting topic, though. Everyone seems to have their own opinions. :)

They also have a graphic novel on here, so I don't understand the dirth of books that have influenced almost every piece of literature that came afterwards. And as I've seen in some other threads, there are quite a few books on here that aren't even novels, but rather short stories.
And seeing as the title of the book is "1001 Books..." and not "1001 Novels..." I think the list is rather short-sighted and narrow (though I am pleased at the amount of international and Eastern lit on here).

There are a few memoirs and semi-biographical novels on the list (Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings and In Cold Blood to name a few), which sticks in my craw. Not because I have something against them as books. I just take exception to the rules being bent for them when there are so many good books kept off the list not because of their quality but the rules.

It would be interesting if LibraryThing started their own quest to compile a 1001 List.
We have a good smattering of book-snobs, book aficionados, and casual literary fans on here that I think we could create a well-balanced list.
We could spend a few months collecting nominations, and then use the voting-thingy to vote yes/no/undecided on different books. Those with the most votes make the list. Ta-da! An Everyman's list of the top 1001 books.

That is a cool idea. And with the number of widgets they make for this site they might be up for it. I wonder, what sort of nomination/weighting process you would need?

I don't know. It's difficult to separate person preferences from objective decisions (for example, I'd be tempted to nominate everything by Poe, whether or not it's a must-read, most influential, most important, etc.), making it a more difficult task, but it would still be interesting to see what LTs members would be able to come up with.
