I was in kindergarten, so it had to have been about 1991. I remember my sister leading me through the library and showing me this shoe box filled with small, low-level books. I had never been taught how to find "just-right" books, or how to navigate the library, so I always came back to this one shoe box and took out the same book, time and time again (or read obscure things that really shouldn't have been in an elementary school library - such as a fingerprinting book).

The book was either entirely orange and black, or yellow and black (I'm leaning towards orange). It was about a cat that wasn't very wanted (I think he may have been a stray or a troublemaker). There were very rough pen illustrations in the book. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Gobbolino, the Witch's Cat maybe? He spent the whole book being unwanted and travelling around. He keeps finding a home and losing it. It's from the early 40's, though.

Its orange cover is far later than your timeframe, though. Here's the wikipedia synopsis too in case it helps. ^-^

My copy also has very rough pen illustrations by the author herself. There are copies with illustrations by others illustrators as well and a quick google didn't turn up any examples of the copy I've got, nor many of any of the others. Here's one from the/a Scolastic edition, though.

No, that's not it. Though it did spark a memory of another detail. It had an urban setting. There was an alley at one point (probably why I think of him as a stray).

Thank you, though!

I'm guessing it was Horatio by Eleanor Clymer. Horatio on the cover of the book is orange and black and the background is kind of a mottled yellow/green/brownish. The illustrations inside also fit what you described.

Horatio was kind of a grumpy cat but he had a good home. He ran away when his owner took in a stray puppy. Most of the book is about his adventures in a city and finding his way back home.

I loved this book when I was little (in the 70's) and still have my falling apart copy.

Holy crap!
I can't believe you found it. The second I saw the cover in the link I knew it was the right book!!!
I just bought it off of Amazon. This is the first book I ever remember reading and as a devoted book lover (obviously, considering where we are!) you can imagine how much this book means to me.
Thank you so much :)

Yay!! So glad I could help. :) And so glad you found a copy - I'm guessing it's out of print?

Yes. I got a used copy. There were about 4-5 for $2-4 and then the price jumps to $79.99! (on Amazon, at least).
