Truly terrifying horror book series?

After playing awhile with the tags for awhile to no luck, I've decided to ask around... What are some good horror book series? Series that make you feel a sense of dread and terror, preferably involving man kind being wiped out, or post-apocalyptic.

Robert McCammon Swan Song not a series but a huge book. And an awesome Post apocalyptic tale.

James Herbert's 'Rats' trilogy - The Rats, Lair, and Domain.

I've been reading Swan Song since you mentioned it, and it's not bad... But not great.

Well Jonner I agree with the (The Strain) and the subsequent books. You might want to look at the post apocalyptic group to find more books in this genre.

And I agree, Swan Song isn't great. But it is pretty damn entertaining. I have read it a couple of times just on the weight of being pretty fun.

I really enjoyed Precipice: The Beginning by Kevin Howard. It has creatures ripping humanity a new one, dragging them from their homes, so it's pretty sweet.

Justin Cronin's trilogy is my favorite. The Passage (2010) The Twelve (2012) and The City of Mirrors (2014)

When the final book is published, I will be re-reading the first 2 as well.

I would agree with that....I was very disappointed with Swan Song, it was very overhyped!

See I felt that way about The Passage. I thought it was needlessly long. While some authors can occasionally get away with that I don't think Cronin pulled it off. I had decided I wasn't going to read the second one, but then I found it on sale for a buck. So in the interest of a bargain I will read it. It is shorter than the Passage so maybe I will like it better.
