And remember: The right wages culture war against the left. The left doesn't see it in those terms.

Actually, having just read the arguments on the other thread, a better summary of Tim's position would be The right feels that the left is waging culture war against them. The left doesn't see it in those terms.

As if I'd believe anything from Fox News. That said, the article smacks more of what the right fears that Obama might do more than of what he actually is doing.

Yeah, Carnophile doesn't understand the point I was making.

The key point in the government article:

"The AFH focuses program participants’ analysis on four primary goals: improving integrated living patterns and overcoming historic patterns of segregation; reducing racial and ethnic concentrations of poverty; reducing disparities by race, color, religion, sex, familial status, national origin, or disability in access to community assets such as education, transit access, and employment, as well as exposure to environmental health hazards and other stressors that harm a person’s quality of life; and responding to disproportionate housing needs by protected class."

Now, having grown up in a county that had restricted housing ("No blacks, jews, asians, indians, or catholics allowed") I think it's hard to argue against the idea of 'historic patterns of segregation'.

The problem is that 'reducing concentrations of poverty' means moving poor people to areas without poor people. Ignoring the fact that some housing exists because the residents deliberately moved away from those 'concentrations'. (cf many middle-class black housing areas whose inhabitants were driven out of the inner city by their neighbors.) Freedom TO assemble implies freedom FROM asembly; the right to choose not to associate with certain people.

The rational approach would be to improve public services in poor areas; provide adequate educational facilities, mass transit, remove environmental health hazards, etc. But that's a radical idea, and would never be implemented. 'Gentrification' means driving the original poor residents elsewhere.

Oh. Would you believe what HUD themselves says? See the second link.

Possibly not. I certainly understood the point you were saying, as I can read English.

BTW, the main point of this thread was the HUD thing. I just tossed the "culture war" item in as a bonus, because it semed timely.

Fine, I checked out your second link. I didn't read every word but I didn't see anything where HUD was going to tell people where they have to live.
