Although I can't quite believe October is already here, it must be, since I'm about to start my read for October AwardCAT, American Gods.

And I just finished up my Sept Booker Prize book The Quickening Maze by Adam Foulds. I think next I'll start Shadows at the Fair by Lea Wait which I'll be reading for the Alpha Cat and also for the Random CAT.

I finished The Cuckoo's Calling by Robert Galbraith, pseudonym for J.K. Rowling, this afternoon. I've got to think about it before I write a review but it will be positive, I liked it a lot. I should finish On The Noodle Road, From Beijing to Rome With Love and Pasta by Jen Lin-liu before the end of the week. Then it will be In The City Of Bikes, The Story of the Amsterdam Cyclist by Pete Jordan.

Having finished The Expats by Chris Pavone, I've started Go With Me by Castle Freeman, Jr. I'm also still working my slow way through In Europe by Geert Mak and I'm looking at Venice: The Collected Traveler by Barrie Kerper because we're driving down to Venice for the long weekend.

I need to finish Radio Shangri-La and then I will tackle American Gods which I've had on my Kindle for a while. Since there is testing going on in my library, I picked up a short, easy read, Love in the Time of Global Warming, a new book by Francesca Lia Block. Wierd! I'm also listening to Ape House in my car.

I finished The Whale: In Search of the Giants of the Sea by Philip Hoare, and am now working on the self-explanatory Sleep: A Very Short Introduction and Eurydice Street: A Place in Athens, a memoir of the author's move to Greece and immersion in Greek culture that has beautiful prose.

I've stalled on a couple of literary reads. With a new dog in the house, I'm not finding as much time to read and I'm finding that light fiction is working best for me right now. I'm reading an ARC of The Dead in Their Vaulted Arches and I've nearly finished the audio of The Sense of an Ending. As soon as things settle down a bit I'll finish The Garden of Evening Mists.

>8 cbl_tn:: JEALOUS! I can't wait for the next Flavia :D

Today I started Fire Down Below, Vol. 3 of William Golding's To the Ends of the Earth trilogy. It would be nice to finish this huge omnibus book before Canadian Thanksgiving so I don't have to bring it home.

I'm also reading and taking copious notes on Gulp, by Mary Roach, and am also reading Solomon Northup's narrative of Twelve Years a Slave. I hope it gets reprinted to coincide with the movie; this copy appears to be a print-on-demand and there are some really weird formatting/spelling errors.

>8 cbl_tn:: JEALOUS! I can't wait for the next Flavia :D

I second that statement! *Whimpers*

I am reading The Butcher Boy by Patrick McCabe because: 1) it is on my TBR pile, 2) it seems to fit the atmosphere of the October RandomCAT, and 3) okay, I was having a really difficult time trying to decide on my next read and this is what jumped out at me.

Currently rereading To Say Nothing of the Dog; or, How We Found the Bishop's Bird Stump at Last by Connie Willis. It's been over 10 years since I first read it, and while it's not quite as engrossing the second time around (since I sort of remember the solution to the mystery), it's still quite funny.

I'm alternating between All the Colors of Darkness amd Train to Anywhere. Train to Anywhere is turning out to be a good read, I believe it's one of those Nook books I picked up either as a Free Friday or at a reduced price. It's a well developed story about ex-con Eddie Griffin, who is trying to put his life back together, but who still manages to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. Set in the Prohibition era, Eddie tries to outsmart the police, a hit man, and various mob bosses after he's framed for two murders and is forced to commit a few bank robberies to keep himself alive.

I finished my YA book, Love in the Time of Global Warming (don't you love that title?) and will start The Rithmatist. At home I finished Radio Shangri-La and have started American Gods. I'm still listening to Ape House in the car.

>33 -Eva-: - Eva - I'm in almost the same situation. About 120 pages into American Gods and find it's easy reading, but have also started watching after all the commotion. We've only seen the first show so far, but I can see it might be taking up some of my "free" time. And football and the baseball series - phew! I am still reading In Europe by Geert Mak, but I'm now just over halfway, having read over 400 very dense pages.

I'm also enjoying Hunting and Gathering by Anna Gavalda and I've also begun a small stack of Paris-themed books to get into the mood for a trip at the end of the month (it's a mere seven and a half hours by car). Incidentally, I've been feeling very well-travelled and lucky with all these convenient road trips. Then the receptionist at the vet's asked me why on earth we'd moved to Munich, when the US was so exciting and exotic. I guess exotic depends on where you start out. Is Paris exotic to Parisians? Or just the centre of the universe?
