I just finished Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, but was VERY let down as I explain in my review. http://www.librarything.com/review/18660570 I already have Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell but I would like recs for something similar:
Fantasy or sci-fi mixed with myths or historical fiction (any place/period)
Long stuff is fine, but I'd really like something that is an easier read to take along for when you're in a waiting room or on a bus etc.

Quest for a Maid
A Murder for Her Majesty
Mairelon the Magician and The Magician's Ward
Those are all YA historical fantasy books (well, the second one is just fiction, not fantasy).
Diane Duane's Young Wizards series has some mythology mixed in it. The first few books are:
So You Want To Be A Wizard
Deep Wizardry
High Wizardry

Two suggestions come to mind right away: Tigana and the Dresden Files by Jim Butcher starting with Storm Front. Tigana is very long but wonderful fantasy about a country that has been removed from everyone's memory by a sorcerer king as revenge for the killing of his son in battle by a prince from that country. The Dresden Files is a mystery series about a wizard detective (Harry Dresden) set in Chicago. I think one or both of these would take your mind off HP.

thanks, those sound promising. I've lived in Chicago too, so I'm curious how much more real (or not) the Dresden book will seem.

I was born and raised in Chicago, but I don't remember thinking "aha, I remember that street corner" or whatever when I was reading Storm Front. On the other hand, nothing jarred me as being completely wrong, either.
Let me know what you think if you read it.
