Anyone else still planning to read either Armadale or Mary Barton in July?
6MarthaJeanne
I've got Mary Barton waiting on my iPad.
7leslie.98
>5 cbl_tn: I am planning on Mary Barton, and like MarthaJeanne, have the ebook waiting...
8cbl_tn
I'll start a thread for Mary Barton. Anyone else interested in Armadale?
9cbl_tn
The thread for the Mary Barton group read is here.

>8 cbl_tn: I looked at my stats and find that the chances for reaching my minimum goals are very good, so I would like to have a go at Armadale. It's been years since I last read it.
11cbl_tn
>10 MissWatson: I've already started Armadale and I'd love to have company!

Are people still interested in reading Water for Elephants in August? If so, I'm happy to set up a thread!
14thornton37814
>13 christina_reads: I still plan to read it. I forgot to check it out before I left work, but I can get it when I return in the middle of the month. Feel free to set up the thread.
15MarthaJeanne
I've just reserved it at the library. I probably won't get it until the second half of the month as it is out now.
17christina_reads
OK then! :) I've set up a thread for Water for Elephants here: http://www.librarything.com/topic/178467

If people are interested, I have set up a thread for discussing next year's challenge here: http://www.librarything.com/topic/178741.
Sorry if you see this message multiple times...I'm trying to post on all the most popular threads!

Not sure if anyone is still checking in here, but I have two books that I'd like to read before the end of the year that might make good group reads, Portrait of a Lady by Henry James and Buddenbrooks by Thomas Mann. If anyone is interested in joining me any month before the end of 2014, I'd be up for starting a group read thread.
20BookLizard
19> People still do check in, but it might be hard to get people this late in the year. A lot of people plan out their group reads well in advance, and neither one of those is a light read.
I read Portrait of a Lady years ago for class and enjoyed it. Hope you do as well.

>20 BookLizard: I thought it was a long shot, but I've also noticed that every year around this time group reads tend to kind of lose steam compared to the beginning of the year. I thought there might be people around like me whose reading interests always take a turn from where they think they'll be when we plan a year ahead.
No big deal either way. I'll read both books at some point anyway.
Maybe I'd have better luck creating a new thread? Something like "added groups reads for the rest of 2014"?

I think people (like me) probably have this thread starred and would be more likely to read it than a new thread.
Good luck with it!

>19 japaul22: Both books are on my TBR list and I'd love to read them but I'm in a funk right now and plowing through with the books I've already started it tough enough - can't sign up on any other ones.
Maybe next year (here's hoping!)

I read Portrait of a Lady last year and don't have any interest in a re-read. I'd be willing to do Buddenbrooks after the first of the year. Like BookLizard said, I planned most of my reading at the beginning of the year. I've got room for some spontaneous reading, but not something this heavy - especially with fall travel and holiday season busy-ness coming up soon.
If you don't get both of them finished this year, you should definitely suggest them as group reads for 2015.

I just remembered that there's a group read of Rob Roy, by Sir Walter Scott, scheduled for October. I can set up a thread this weekend if people would like.
28sjmccreary
>26 rabbitprincess: yes, i'm still planning for this
29MarthaJeanne
>27 cyderry: Sure! I have an Arthurian category this year.
>19 japaul22: I picked up a copy of Portrait of a Lady on Sunday, so I guess I'll be reading it this year or next.

36sjmccreary
I finished Pillars of the Earth today - has there been a thread set up for the quarter-long read?
38MarthaJeanne
Sure, why not. I found it on Gutenberg.
39RidgewayGirl
I'm tentatively interested. Charlotte and I do not have a good track record, but I'd like to try something by her that isn't Wuthering Heights. It'd be a week or two before I began, however.
40sjmccreary
I'm still planning on Shirley, but I don't know how long it will take for the book to get to me.
42PawsforThought
>39 RidgewayGirl: Charlotte didn't write Wuthering Heights, Emily did.
43RidgewayGirl
Ack, you're right. Emily was the wild child, Charlotte the controlling one and Anne the one I'd hang out with. Ok, now I'm more amenable to reading Shirley.
44christina_reads
>43 RidgewayGirl: Haha now I'm thinking about that Kate Beaton comic again ("Dude Watchin' with the Brontes")!
45MarthaJeanne
Anyone else from here interested in the Science, Religion, History reads over in the 75 group? I've just opened the thread https://www.librarything.com/topic/182246 for The Man who loved China
46cbl_tn
It sounds like several of us are up for Shirley. Anyone want to start a thread? I'm on an iPad mini at the moment or I would do it now.
47mamzel
>45 MarthaJeanne: That's a fascinating book. Winchester writes great nonfiction!
48MarthaJeanne
I'm reading it in German, so I'm hoping for a good translator. Still, I got it from the library, which is a lot cheaper than ordering it.
I've just read a lot about the Jesuits in China, so there will be a lot of comparisons to make.

I'm unfortunately going to have to bow out of the Unbroken group read as I am 77th in the library lineup and doubt that I will get my hands on the book until sometime in 2015!
53thornton37814
>51 DeltaQueen50: That is sad, Judy! I'm hoping our library's copy is available, but I suspect it will be. It was checked out recently, and I heard someone recommending it to someone recently too.
54DeltaQueen50
>53 thornton37814: I know, I was quite surprised as it's not a new book when I went to order it the other day. They have a total of 20 copies but I still don't think there a chance I will get it before the end of November.
55sjmccreary
My TBR pile is too tall and I know I won't be able to finish everything. I'd be willing to take Unbroken back and wait until after the first of the year if you'd like to schedule another group read then.
56DeltaQueen50
>55 sjmccreary: I think I had best bow out of a group read as I have no way of knowing how long I will have to wait to get Unbroken. Earlier this year it took me 5 months to get A Constellation of Vital Phenomena and I was only 13th on that list.
57sjmccreary
Fair enough, Judy. Say something when you finally DO get it, though. If I end up returning this copy un-read I'd be willing to get it back again and read together with you. Whenever that is.
58cbl_tn
The thread for the November group read of Shirley is up: http://www.librarything.com/topic/182443
59DeltaQueen50
>57 sjmccreary: I will let you know, Sandy. I just checked and it is slowly but surely moving, this morning I was 69th in the line up. :)
60thornton37814
Is anyone going to get to Unbroken or have we decided to postpone that one? I had planned to read the university library's copy but discovered we no longer have one. The one at the public library is currently checked out although it may be available later in the month. I'm not sure I will be able to get it. I will certainly try to do so, and if we do go ahead with it, I might even just attempt to ILL it.
61mamzel
>60 thornton37814: What?! Tell your university that this is a book they must have on their shelves and to replace it post haste!
62sjmccreary
>61 mamzel: Exactly. I've been surprised at the books that my library doesn't have. They claim that they have one of the top 20 biggest collections in the nation, and yet they didn't have Rob Roy when I wanted it for last month's group read. Even the person I spoke to about it was surprised.
63thornton37814
>61 mamzel: I'm the one that probably missed it on the list of things we were withdrawing that way. I handed the list to someone else to do the "busy work" on. I'm certain that I would have re-ordered it if I'd noticed it on the list though. However, as busy as we were this year getting ready for the renovation, those lost items might not have made it out of the catalog without my handing it off to someone else.
64mamzel
The good news is that copies are showing up in used book stores. If you have a good one nearby you might get lucky! Then you could donate it to your library.
65christina_reads
Are people still interested in doing a Connie Willis month in December? If so, should I go ahead and set up a thread?
66cbl_tn
>65 christina_reads: I'm planning to read To Say Nothing of the Dog this month.

>65 christina_reads: Yes, please! I'm planning to read Blackout.
