This may have been covered before so my apologies in advance.
Would it be possible to create a "returning member" login link instead of using the same one for creating new accounts?
Usually I leave myself logged in but occasionally I do log out, especially if I am going to be away for a significant period of time. Twice now I have inadvertently created a second account because I mistyped my account name.
Both times I have alerted the PTB to correct and delete but surely they have better things to do than clean up after an inept typist.... (I can't help it if my fingers can't keep up with my brain!)

I think this would be reasonable. :)

I agree, even just something like requiring a new member to check that they agree with the Terms of Use or something could work, in that only new account creators would need to check the box; leaving it unchecked would signal you are signing into an existing account. This would have the additional benefit of making sure people know there are Terms of Use, if only to then point to them and say: You agreed to this!

Strongly strongly agree! I've deliberately been very, very careful about typing in my username, so I don't accidentally create a new account, but it would be so much more convenient and easier to have a seperate log-in thing.

I agree that there should be a Terms of Use checkbox for creating a new account. This would solve the problem of accidental account creation and might be legally helpful.

You can make the checkbox simply say "New user", no need to go into TOS if you don't want... I too have accidentally created accounts trying to log-in.

7: however, a TOS one would be better (in my opinion) in that it may possibly show the potential new users the rules, they would know what to expect.

A new user checkbox might be misunderstood by people, especially if they are not from English-speaking countries (I guess a big part of them still enters the site via LT.COM the first time). The TOS checkbox ("I agree to the TOS/rules and regulations of LT (this is necessary to create a new account)") is much clearer.

Note that while this topic has been being discussed there have been new posts to FAQ and Bug Collectors about books being "deleted." As usual, it turned out that people had accidentally created new accounts when signing in, and were horrified to be confronted with an empty catalog.
It keeps happening. It would be easy to prevent.

I'd intended to post when the first one showed up, but this topic had dropped off my first page and I was too lazy to hunt for it.

Best RSI I've seen in ages. It wouldn't impact me personally; I've never suffered the problems described. But it's purely good.

>15 paradoxosalpha: You've never seen the problems described here because they were fixed more than 15 years ago.
