Edited: Dec 30, 2014, 7:46 pm

Hi! :) I'm new to the 100 Books Challenge (I usually did the 75 Books Challenge), but I've been reading so many picture books/mangas, etc lately, I've been able to reach 100 each year, so away I go! :) *fingers crossed*

ETA: I also like listing movies and music I've listened to, so you'll see that on here as well.

Silence Becomes You directed by Stephanie Sinclaire
Tags: drama, fantasy, romance, suspense, maine, siblings, winter, telekinesis, dvd, R
Rating:
Synopsis/Notes: Two sisters, Grace and Violet, bound together by more than blood, live a reclusive life in a large mansion, detached from society and reality too. They have a plan. It's hardly conventional, but the outcome nine months later is all that counts. Whatever they do they must not fall in love with the man that they choose to ensnare.

Hi Sara! Good luck hitting that magic number again this year (though I'm sure you'll get there no problem). :)

Is that movie a direct-to-DVD release? Doesn't sound familiar...

15saraslibrary
Jan 2, 2015, 6:08 pm

Hi Laura! :) Thanks for the optimism. *fingers crossed I make it to 100, too*

I'm assuming it is a direct-to-DVD, too. I'd never heard of it before either. Looking on Wikipedia and IMDb, it's a British-made film but with American accents (2 out of the 3 main actors are British) and filmed in Lithuania. Whatever it takes to make the budget work, right? :) It's not a movie I'd really recommend unless you're looking for a kind of weird love triangle. It says it's a thriller on the back cover, but it's more of a drama.

Random Junk

I was flipping through A Load of Hooey by Bob Odenkirk at work (unfortunately, it was a patron's hold *sigh*) and loved a few of its quotes:

Famous Quotations--Unabridged

"Two things are infinite: the universe and human stupidity; and I'm not sure about the universe. But that might just be me being stupid." -- Albert Einstein

"A girl should be two things: classy and fabulous. Oh, and shallow--really, really shallow." -- Coco Chanel

Actual-Factual New Jesus Facts

A fresh new Dead Sea Scroll was discovered and deciphered last year, and some fascinating facts about the historical figure of Jesus have come to light.

1. Jesus Christ went by the name Jesus and was only called "Geez" by his closest friends.
2. He NEVER used the name Jesus H. Christ as we know it. However, there are documents signed "Holy Christ" and "Christ Almighty." There is no record of him appearing under the moniker "Jesus Christ Almighty" or "Gee Whiz."
3. He once hosted a comedy-benefit-revue-style show for lepers where he appeared in drag as "Geez Louise."

Offended? Blame this dude. :P

Bob Odenkirk is stuck under a cat holding someone's wine and a stinky old pipe.

The Slug by Elise Gravel
Tags: nonfiction, juvenile, humor, nature, science, animals, slugs, series, disgusting critters, checked out from work
Rating:
Synopsis/Notes: One in a series of humorous books about disgusting creatures, The Slug is a look at the land slug. It covers such topics as the slug's two pairs of tentacles, one pair for seeing, one pair for smelling (it can see you're a kid and smell like broccoli), its breathing hole (on the side of its head!), and its pretty gross mucous covering (in order to find a partner, the slug can follow another slug's mucous trail. True love!). Although silly and off-the-wall, The Slug contains real information that will tie in with curriculum.

Ooh, ouch! Even my ego's bruised a little. :D But I loved what one person said: "that's not a push up, that's just humping the ground, onehanded." I think Gaston kind of cheated a little. I've heard of a way to do push-ups without putting all your weight in one area, but I'm not sure how. *shrugs* Thanks for the link, though! :) That was awesome.

I've never heard of G4TV. I only get Fox, PBS, some Spanish channels, and religious channels. It sucks. :( That's why I watch so many movies.

Actually, I said senseless cartoon violence, so you're right either way. As long as the violence is directed towards oneself or a friend--in a nice/mean sort of way--then it's ok in my book. Like so. It's even fit for family. Um...as long as you run far, far away before it happens.

Fetishes directed by Nick Broomfield
Tags: documentary, bdsm, new york, lesbians, dvd, NR
Rating:
Synopsis/Notes: Nick Broomfield and a documentary crew visit Pandora's Box, an up-scale house of bondage on Manhattan's Fifth Avenue, where clients pay $175 an hour to be subservient to mistresses. Mistresses talk about their craft; a few clients, usually masked, are interviewed as well. Then, the camera watches sessions organized around fetishes: rubber, wrestling, corporal punishment, masochism, and infantilism. Mistress Raven, the owner of Pandora's Box, explains that pain need not be part of the subservient experience: it is, at its root, a transfer of power. After their session has ended, clients talk about how drained, relaxed, relieved, and at peace they are.

Synopsis/Notes: All John cares about is setting the world record for knocking down dominoes and spending time with his best friends at school until his closest friend, Dom, is hospitalized, leaving John and the gang wondering what to do for him. (A very sweet ending. And the "poetry" part of the book isn't rhyming; it's just fractured sentences, so maybe a couple words on one line, a whole sentence on the next, etc. which makes it great for reluctant readers.)

Dogs in Cars by Lara Jo Regan
Tags: nonfiction, photography, animals, dogs, automobiles, checked out from work
Rating:
Synopsis/Notes: First we had dogs underwater, then dogs shaking off water... so why not dogs soaking up the exhilarating no-holds-barred pleasure of a car ride? Photographer Lara Jo Regan began her pet project as a calendar, but the response was overwhelming and absolute: Her photographs of the cruising canines, taken from incredible perspectives, with tongues hanging and ears flapping, became a global Internet sensation. The energy of the photographs is impressive and visceral. In order to get these shots, Regan built a special light, which jutted out over the roof of the car, a harness that allowed her to lean out of the window, and various other contraptions to make the images come to life. This book will make you laugh out loud and want to share it with everyone you know. It’s full speed happiness.

I know! I'm shocked. :o But it is super cool. I was debating whether to give it a 4 or 5, because it is kind of slow, but overall, I really liked it. There's more to the movie than just avoiding the sun. The biggest threat are other humans who ambush the main characters and plan to turn the men into meat and the women into future baby dispensers. Plus I only paid $2.88 (it was an odd price; usually they're an even $3 or $5) at Big Lots! I was stoked over that. :) Definitely look for it if you can. Or I could lend it to you....

You're probably right about the s/h. I looked online and there are some cheap copies on eBay. Also there're some on Amazon (the free shipping's always nice, but you have to spend up to $35 to qualify). I agree: Big Lots might be your best bet. Or what about Game Stop? Synopsis/Notes: Young Tim Cornish's life has begun with great promise. Blessed with extraordinary good looks, Tim enjoyed much attention and cared little of broken hearts. At University he was a favored student in a prestigious creative writing course, but a chance meeting, a stolen kiss and a sudden flare of passion sets Tim on a journey of betrayal, heartbreak and murder. In a flashback, he tells his story of cruelty, love and a soul-destroying guilt that offers little chance for redemption. (Based on the same-named Barbara Vine/Ruth Rendell book.)

You and Harujion by Keiko Kinoshita
Tags: fiction, juvenile, gay, romance, orphans, manga, tokyo, japan
Rating:
Synopsis/Notes: Haru Akaishi's father has just died, leaving him an orphan at age 17. It seems his father was in a lot of debt and took out some shady loans. Just when the Yakuza-esque creditors come to collect, a mysterious lawyer named Yuuji Senoh appears and says he'll deal with the matter personally. As it turns out, Mr. Senoh was someone Haru befriended many years ago as his mother ailed in the hospital, but Haru had forgotten about him. When the bank takes back the mortgage on his house, Haru takes Mr. Senoh up on his offer to live at his apartment. While Mr. Senoh claims that he's only trying to offer financial support to Haru as a minor, perhaps there's is a stronger bond between the two than either realize at first. (I wasn't too impressed with the drawings. And I expected more out of this story, unless there's some sequel or two I'm not aware of.... Very, very mild gay theme. Even the kissing scenes weren't explicit.)

To clarify, the guy to the right is a ghost and in love with the guy to the left. He gets a whap upside the head for saying: "Then, let's go find a fresh dead body somewhere...and if I possess it...don't they say that dead men are fully erect?" {in case you couldn't read the print}.

Little is known about where they came from or why they are bent on consuming human-kind, but the sudden appearance of an enormous Titan is about change everything'' (Thanks to Melissa and all other groovy manga-reading LTers who inadvertently reminded me to read Attack on Titan. The ending...wow! I really need to get my hands on #2 now.)

Oh, yeah! Thank you again. :) I'm still trying to get used to manga-style illustrations (that's why I didn't give it a 5), but I really liked the plot. I think I saw an ad in the back (or front, if you're reading it wrong ;) for the anime of Attack on Titan. Have you seen it? It said it was released June 3, 2014, but I didn't know if that included the U.S.

Yep I've watched the anime. It's only current with about half of what's out in manga form as far as I know though. I did like watching it and it stayed true to the manga. I prefer to watch my anime in Japanese with English subtitles though so I'm not positive what's out and not for English dubbed.

Tags: drama, islands, vermont, incest, coming of age, dvd, R
Rating:
Synopsis/Notes: A father and daughter isolated on an island off the East Coast and living on a once thriving commune grapple with the limits of family and sexuality. (Kind of slow, but what do you expect from a drama? The incest is very tame, considering it only consists of a kiss and a few looks, so no worries there in case that turns your stomach. Pretty sad really, especially the end, though you know it's coming. Half-hearted recommendation if you're into dramas.)

Not her parents. Not school. Not even the empty promise of love. Her head filled with morbid fantasies of suicide, Orange finds herself standing at the edge of her rooftop when the drunken, enigmatic young man, Dashu, enters her world, changing it forever." (Very distinctive, beautiful artwork. The front cover was 90% of why I bought the book; the synopsis and a quick flip-through cinched it for me. *dollar bills sprouting wings and flying out of my purse every time I visit HPB* :D Although I loved the unique illustrations, some of it was blurry (not a misprint), and I didn't follow the story very well. I actually liked how depressing the book was, although that was the main reason why it took so long for it to get published. Favorite quote (from the author in the afterwards): "Human beings are terrible and end up breaking your heart." That pretty much sums up the feel of Orange.)
