I have just started To The Hilt by Dick Francis. I have read many of his books and like his almost conversational writing style and traditional style of Mystery.

>4 Carol420: - I've had those on my list for two months but I'm determined to get to them this month. My neighbor is in England and is supposed to bring me a souvenir copy of Love You Dead.

>5 Lynxear: - I haven't read any Dick Francis in years but I used to enjoy them. I'll look and see if I can find one again.

Digressing to historical fiction........ I recently picked up several of the Eagle series by Simon Scarrow. I see you have some in your library. Do you recommend them?

>6 Olivermagnus: Could you ask if they could just bring me Peter James? I would be so grateful:)

>7 Olivermagnus: I like Dick Francis... the one I am currently reading is very good. He has a great talent for creating engaging heroes and sprinkles clues throughout his books and doesn't conceal vital information as Baldacci does in his Maxwell series. Decider and Dead Heat are the best I have read so far though this one rates up there too. I would call his mysteries light reading.

I have mixed feelings for Simon Scarrow as an author of historical fiction. I did not like his first book Under the Eagle... it was unbelievable ( a slave servant with no fighting skills surviving in the front lines of a battle), the battle scenes were not well defined and his liberal use of modern English slang for a setting in ancient roman occupation of England, put me off.

But I read another book and I liked the camaraderie of the main characters Quintus Licinius Cato - freed slave and Lucius Cornelius Macro - centurion. The two develop a nice friendship and compliment each other's abilities.

My main gripe against Scarrow is his use of modern English slang in his works... it spoils the story for me.

I have not been reading too much in this genre as I am whittling away at a couple of SF/F challenge reads that I set myself for 2016.

I did read Robert Goddard's The Ways of the World this summer (4 stars) and have now picked up the sequel, The Corners of the Globe. Just getting started but am enjoying it at least as much as the opening volume.

I hope to participate more toward the end of the year and into 2017. In the meantime, I do lurk regularly and am enjoying everyone's reviews and comments.

>21 ScoLgo: When we read this trilogy as a group read we generally felt the books in the trilogy got better as it went along. These were some of my favourite reads if the year. We're pleased to have you with us no matter how much or how little mystery and suspense books you are reading at any time. If nothing else the group gives us all ideas of new books to read or new authors.

Just listened to My First Murder by Leena Lehtolainen. It was the first murder I read by her, the first in her series around Maria Kallio, who is rather ambivalent about her role as a cop, even more so as the case she investigates involves people she new well not too long ago. I liked that in her world there is not just the one case, but other things going on at the same time. I gave this one a solid 4.

Where else! We have some good group reads coming up in October:
Simple Genius by David Baldacci : #3 in the King and Maxwell Series
The Alexandria Link by Steve Berry : #2 in the Cotton Malone Series
The Crucifix Killer by Chris Carter : #1 in the Robert Hunter Series

I've been wanting to get to the Chris Carter Series for a number of years. Let's hope it doesn't disappoint after all that time!

I'll wait until we read the first Chris Carter before I order any more.

I think I have my books picked out for next year too. My daughter came and asked what that pile of books was that I had piled on top of my desk and on another piece of furniture. I told her they were the books I was going to read next year. She looked at me like I was crazy and said Oh my!
