By popular demand: tell us which fictional characters and/or non-fictional authors make you swoon. Movie characters allowed as well, I suppose, mostly so I can list them myself. Oh, and this thread is dedicated to ellevee, who seems nearly as imbalanced as I am, and craziness loves company.

Ahh thanks, been waiting for this.

Have to start with the Buffy/Angel characters - Sorry, folks, but I'll take Riley over Angel any day, but the one I really want it SPIKE. What d'you suppose are the psychological implications of loving a human/vampire/vampire with a soul/ghost/vampire? (I think I nailed that progression... someone correct me if I'm wrong.)

3scaifea
Nov 13, 2007, 1:03 pm

I think there may need to be a rumble over Spike. And he would *so* enjoy that, wouldn't he?

4Morphidae

Valentine from the Anita Blake series

Gil Grissom from CSI

5fyrefly98
Nov 13, 2007, 1:28 pm

Oh, dear, I'm sure there's plenty. I'll try to stick to non-YA characters, to avoid duplicating the other thread, and also to keep this list under three pages long!

Most recent is Robbie Turner from Atonement, but I'm pretty sure that's just because James McAvoy is playing him in the movie.

In no particular order:
Ramses from The Mummy
Marius from The Vampire Chronicles
Little Ricky from Prodigal Summer
Ragnarok from Fool on the Hill
Jon Snow from A Song of Ice and Fire
Perrin Aybara from the first few Wheel of Time books (before he got all annoying and single-minded about his wife)
Stephen Maturin from Patrick O'Brian's books

I need to think about this some, but off the top of my head:

Spike from Buffy

Jess from Gilmore Girls (Oh, how I love Jess.)

As for books, it's an author not a character but I'm kind of in love with Jonathan Safran Foer who is unfortunately married. I'll get back to you on characters.

7scaifea
Nov 13, 2007, 1:36 pm

From my current reads, I'd like to add Richard Raul from Terry Goodkind's Wizard's First Rule et al., and Crowley from Good Omens to my already extensive list. Funny, they're very nearly extreme opposites in character, but, hey, I'm an equal opportunity obsessor.

8philosojerk
Nov 13, 2007, 1:38 pm

>5 fyrefly98:, fyrefly98 - Jon Snow, really? I never would have thought of him that way, maybe because at the outset of the series he's just too young. Now you've got me thinking, though...

#6 twomoredays: Ooooh, Jess. I forgot about him. Good choice. The last season of GG is winging its way to my mail box as I type, and I'm very excited (haven't seen any of it yet)!

Edited: Nov 13, 2007, 1:56 pm

>8 philosojerk: philosojerk - Too young? It's been a while since I've read them, but I thought he was 16-18ish at the beginning of the series. Too young for me in real life, obviously, but not too young for a BookBoyfriend (especially considering the ages of some of my YA lit crushes...)

Ah, well, if it's my destiny to grow up to be a Dirty Old Lady, I can live with that. ;)

11citygirl
Nov 13, 2007, 2:01 pm

Oh, this is a fun topic.

Lord Peter Wimsey. Wouldn't be interesting to see how he'd translate to modern times?

Michael Curry, The Witching Hour.

Aragorn, especially of the Viggo Mortensen variety.

Le Vicomte de Valmont.

Since we've ventured into tv-land: Anybody want to enter into a sharing arrangement with Spike and Angel?

And Bobby Briggs from Twin Peaks, who is technically a literary character because he's featured in The Secret Diary of Laura Palmer.

These are in no particular order.

12scaifea

#11: You can have Angel, but I'm willing to fight for exclusive rights to Spike. Did I mention that I have a full-sized standee of him? The husband relegated it to the basement when we got married, though...

Currently, Henry Fitzroy from the tv show Blood Ties. However, I don't feel the same way about the Henry Fitzroy in the books the show is based on. TV!Henry has more of a sense of humor and (though it might surprise some of the viewers) is somewhat less jealous.

Morphidae - I agree, Gil Grissom is fantastic.

Movie-wise, I'd have to say that Jim McKay from The Big Country is the perfect man.

I can't think of anyone from any books who I think about that way, though.

17twomoredays

scaifea - I'll back out of the showdown for Spike if I can have Jess all to myself. I mean the man wrote a book. Mmm...

18ellevee
Nov 13, 2007, 3:44 pm

* Doyle - Angel
* Gregory House - House, MD
* Severus Snape - Harry Potter
* Wash - Firefly
* Hunter S. Thompson
* Rorschach - Watchmen
* Spider Jerusalem - Transmetropolitan
* Rimmer - Red Dwarf
* V - V For Vendetta
* GOB - Arrested Development

They're all either insane, dead, or horribly damaged. Or all three! Yay!

OMG Josh... yummy.

Back to this Angel/Spike thing. citygirl, scaifea is right. Angel's all yours. Now don't mind scaifea and I's cat fight over Spike.

Aside from Snape in HP (who, frankly, is only fantasy-worthy if we're talkin' Alan Rickman), in the books I always had the hots for long-haired, dragon-wrangling Charlie Weasley (I'm a sucker for long hair on a man)...

I have only recently discovered him, so I don't really know much about him, but I drool every time I see a photo of Paul Auster. He is so very hot - I don't care if he is way too old for me. As for fictional characters, I was really digging Dexter until I read the part where he is uninterested in sex. (I haven't seen the tv show so I can't comment on that.) Perhaps I could rewrite that part of his character.

25littlebookworm
Nov 13, 2007, 7:12 pm

Mr Darcy (especially as played by Colin Firth) - Pride and Prejudice
Mr Rochester - Jane Eyre
Joscelin Verreuil - Kushiel's Legacy
Captain Jack Sparrow
Han Solo
Mal - Firefly
Aragorn - Lord of the Rings

Hmmm ... I think that may be it for me. =)

26studio1

Gilbert Blythe. Sigh...

27mrstreme
Nov 13, 2007, 7:21 pm

I second littlebookworm on Captain Jack Sparrow.

In addition:

1) Lestat from Anne Rice's vampire series
2) Louis from Anne Rice vampire series
3) Rhett Butler
4) Noah from The Notebook
5) Lincoln (Dominic Purcell) from the TV show, "Prison Break"

And he's not fictional, but Maks on "Dancing with the Stars" is pure, unadulterated sex in a pair of tight pants.

LOL!

28beserene
Nov 13, 2007, 7:51 pm

I already mentioned my closet full o'...

Mr. Darcy of Pride and Prejudice
Batman (my god, that cape does it for me, let alone everything else)
Remus Lupin of Harry Potter and Prisoner of Azkaban (I was deeply wounded when Tonks entered the picture, but I stayed silent for the sake of the kids) :)
Will Scarlet of Robin Hood (though, really, I always picture him as Christian Slater)
Robert Goren of "Law and Order: Criminal Intent"
Luke Danes of "Gilmore Girls"

but as this is a rather large walk-in closet with its own cast-iron clawfoot bathtub and a fainting couch (I have always wanted a fainting couch, despite the fact that I've never fainted in my life), I'd like to add...

Laurie, otherwise known as young Theodore Lawrence of Little Women
Professor Bhaer, also of Little Women (If I had been Jo, I would've been in trouble)
The Beast, both from the Disney version (but only if he stays a beast) and from McKinley's Rose Daughter (case in point--and not, I would argue, YA, though it is often placed on those shelves)
Edmond Dantes of The Count of Monte Cristo
Eric from The Phantom of the Opera (the book, not the movie)
The Phantom from "The Phantom of the Opera" (okay, the movie too, but only the new, Gerard Butler one)
Beowulf (hey, who doesn't want Beowulf?)
Neil Gaiman (of course, as he is a real author and not a character, I would get arrested for keeping him in my closet, plus his wife might object, but a girl has her dreams)

And is it wrong to say that James McAvoy made me want Mr. Tumnus for my very own?

I think I'm going to need a bigger closet.

29mrstreme

Okay, one more:

The entire male cast of the movie "300"

30twomoredays

Oh, I'm glad to see I'm not the only one who swoons over Captain Jack Sparrow. I left that out originally because I thought everyone would think me nuts. (Also, add in nearly every other Johnny Depp character.)

Oh, and it's another author whose wife would probably also object, but A.J. Jacobs.

31carlym
Nov 13, 2007, 9:20 pm

Definitely Mr. Darcy and Gilbert Blythe, and also the Scarlet Pimpernel, Captain Wentworth (Persuasion), George Emerson (A Room with a View), and Calvin from the A Wrinkle in Time series.

32alcottacre
Nov 13, 2007, 9:25 pm

I am totally in love with James Alexander Malcolm Mackenzie Frazier from the Outlander series by Diana Gabaldon. I told my husband about it, too! (lol)

I also could handle Roarke from the In Death series by J.D. Robb - and he has the big bucks!

28 beserene

haha I was thinking about James McAvoy as Leto Jr. in Children of Dune, myself
He's so pretty...

And since we seem to be going for anything and everything here...Duncan McLeod (Adrian Paul is yummy).

Gabe (and, for that matter, Danny and Sara) from Witchblade the tv show.

Johnny Castle in Dirty Dancing

And for any other fan of Robin McKinley, I was reminded of some book characters that I adore...Con and Mel and Corlath and even Ossin, who may not be fairy-tale perfect but is so much more real.

George Cooper and Nawat Crow

Thought of some more:

I can't remember the name of the character but the main male protagonist from Caroline B. Cooney's Both Sides of Time. I loved him growing up.

And for a more adult time-traveling romance I also live the time-traveler from The Time-Traveler's Wife.

36twomoredays
Nov 13, 2007, 9:56 pm

On a different note, The Secret Lover Man from Fransica Lia Block's Weetzie Bat books.

Also, I have no idea what this character's name was but there was a Babysitter's club spin-off about Dawn and her friends called California Diaries and one of the characters, Sunny, falls for this guy who carries around a worn copy of On the Road and I of course fell for him too.

Actually, while we're at it I should add Jack Kerouac himself to the list.

My bad boy problem is EPIC, I tell you.

Andy - The 40-year-Old Virgin
Sherlock Holmes - Sherlock Holmes
Hellboy - Hellboy (only when played by Ron Perlman, however).
Jack Sparrow - POTC (I'll own up to it)
Nick - The Stand
Jakob Grimm - The Brothers Grimm
Dexter - Dexter (the show, not the books)
Charlie - Lost
Claude - Heroes (COME BACK TO THE SHOW!)

Real life:
Stephen Merchant - Extras (He's so tall and funny!)
Christopher Eccleston
Stephen Colbert

And I would switch teams for Amy Sedaris.

#24 Dexter DOES get interested in sex. And it's SO. HOT.

38trinah

Edward Cullen from Twilight
Peter Petrelli from Heroes
Pudge - Looking for Alaska

Along with several others I can't think of right now...

39scaifea
Nov 14, 2007, 7:18 am

ahem. I also have a life-sized standee of Cap'n Sparrow. Also relegated to the basement by husband.

And if we're including for whom we would 'switch teams' (pardon the ridiculously correct grammar - I can't help myself), then mine is Faith from Buffy/Angel. Or Willow, who's, of course, already on that other team.

#32 - alcottacre, my #1 is also Jamie Fraser - wow, oh wow, oh wow! The sad thing about my obsession with him is that he reminds me very much of an ex of mine, so I always feel pains of guilt and borderline marital unfaithfulness when I read the Outlander series and picture myself as Claire.

Most of my other characters have been noted above, but so it goes:
Mr. Darcy, Pride and Prejudice
Aragorn, Lord of the Rings
Remus Lupin, Harry Potter
Bill Weasley, Harry Potter
Guido Brunetti, Donna Leon's mystery series
Jake Barnes, The Sun Also Rises
Spike, Buffy the Vampire Slayer (TV series)

A couple that I forgot (after Jamie Frazier everyone else pales in comparison - lol): Radcliffe Emerson from the Amelia Peabody series by Elizabeth Peters and Allen Quartermaine from King Solomon's Mines by H. Rider Haggard.

Many characters have engaged me over the years but only one jumps to mind as the question is posed. JAMES BOND! Back in high school, we read every Bond book with an insane attention to detail and discussed them ad nauseum. It was about the time of the first Bond movie. We could only dream of the day we could drink martinis "stirred, not shaken." We even attempted to play our own version of baccarat, James' preferred game in the casino.

Thanks for the memories, and thank you Ian Fleming. Now to root around in the basement for the worn, yellowed paperbacks.

I unquestionably fell for Rochester when I first read Jane Eyre aged 10. I also fell for Amit in A Suitable Boy. Am I the only person with a soft spot for Sirius? (And not just because he was played by Gary Oldman, although I daresay it helped.) Oh, and I quite fancied Athos in The Three Musketeers. He had suitable levels of angstiness.

Although when I was thinking about this to start off with I kept coming up with girls - Clare from The Time Traveler's Wife being a prime example. Mmmm.

(Touchstones deeply unkeen on loading...)

Although I'm quite over vampire fiction -
Lestat and Louis from The Vampire Chronicles

Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) - Pirates of The Caribbean

Jonathan Strange And Mr. Norrell Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell

Napoleon Dynamite - I like nerds sometimes.

Legolas - Lord of The Rings the movie. The book version I found creepy until I saw Orlando Bloom.

Denzel Washington's character in American Gangster

I might consider switching teams for:

Dana Scully - The X-files

Xena - Xena Warrior Princess. But she kind of looks like a man anyway.

#22-fleela-YES! I thought I was the only one in the world that was cheering for Duckie! I still love that character!

My list:

Captain Jack Sparrow, obviously.
I have to second Mal AND Wash from Firefly.
Ponyboy from The Outsiders.
Nick from The Stand.
Tanis and Raistlin from Dragonlance.
Odd from Odd Thomas.
William Wallace from Braveheart.
Inigo Montoya from The Princess Bride.
John Bender from The Breakfast Club.
Wheels from Degrassi Junior High.
Jack from Titanic.
