Built-in fan base dedicated to following every new work, hit-miss record where some books have been very good, cultural phenomena through sales and cinematic or television versions of his work, fast writer so he is always in the public eye, versatile in his style and content (i.e. it isn't the same book every time) and often topical, first name you think of in the horror genre with no up-and-coming challengers (think of another current name, fast), respected by other writers.

By having stories to tell.
Regardless if you like his genre (s) or not, King can tell a story. And authors that can do that usually end up doing well.

I've read enough of his horror that I don't want to read anymore, it's never been my thing, but I've been meaning to read Different Seasons at some point, something from outside his usual genre, to help me judge better whether I really think he can write (but I suspect he really can).

The only book of his that I have read is 11/22/63 and it was excellent. I have never read any horror stories (unless you count Frankenstein) but it does show that Stephen King is an imaginative and excellent writer.
