So I gather you two know each other from another site. But it's not Goodreads or Shelfari, right? Because we had those influxes already and absorbed a few members from each place.

>7 clamairy: Yes, we’re both from BookLikes. It has a really nice format, at least for the social aspect of things, but the staff there has mostly ignored us for a year. Lately, the site speeds have been getting worse, to the point of being unusable, and people are giving up.
The staff actually posted a message earlier today, the first one we’ve received in months, to tell us they’re "back now" and committed to fixing the issues and improving the site. Then the site went offline. :) We’ve been jerked around a lot, so it’s hard to say if the message will amount to anything.

I want to start my own reading thread in January, but I think Bookstooge’s approach of just jumping right in and starting one for December was the best way to do it. It takes me a little longer to ease into things… first the lurking, then a few replies in existing threads to see if people start chasing me out with pitchforks, then a whole thread. ;)
A few BookLikes people had started migrating over to Leafmarks right before they announced they were shutting down. It’s been a bad year for book sites.

I find it reassuring that this site has been around for so long and the admins are very engaged and constantly updating and improving. I notice a lot of "dormant" groups, but there are quite a lot that have constant traffic so I think this site will be around for awhile :) At least I hope so - I just got unpacked after the second move this year and don't want to do it again!

Thank you all! And as for thread hijacking, the more it happens, the better. I'm not very social in real life, so I get my fill of it online.
Right now I am currently using Wordpress to blog everything, reviews and not, and I keep a personal library of reviews on my computer using a free program called Calibre. However, having a site with a book database is just plain helpful!
So thank you all again. It really does mean a lot.

On a side note, I copy\paste my reviews from another site, with all the html formatting already in place, including links. Is there anyway to keep that formatting/linking here? I'd rather not have to basically rewrite my whole review just so I can include the formatting.

Well, I read some of his Star Trek tie-in stuff back in my early 20’s when I was in my Star Trek phase, but I haven’t read any of his original work. I downloaded For Love of Mother-Not from the Baen Free Library many years ago, but haven’t felt terribly motivated to try it.
I haven’t tried to include hyperlinks in any of my LT reviews, so I hadn’t noticed that it didn’t work. It does carry my basic italics and bold formatting fine when I’m copying the text with the html tags from elsewhere. I usually copy and paste the same text (with html tags) into GR and LT, then I have to edit them out in BL since it doesn’t recognize the html tags when I paste them into the regular text entry box. Although, now that I actually think about it, I assume it would work if I went to the source code and pasted in there instead. Huh, all these years of searching for those stupid tags, removing them, and adding the intended formatting…

I'm not a big fan of foster, as I found most of his stuff to be pure drivel. But the books of his that I DO like, I really like. It is weird.

That way anyone reading my thread can see it and comment right there, instead of having to follow a link and come back if they want to comment. It strikes me that that might most closely replicate the direct "comment on reviews" function that you've valued in other sites?

Over on booklikes just click the HTML icon ( the less than symbol followed by greater than symbol) and booklikes will accept way more HTML coding than LT or goodreads.
An exception is the spoiler tag. You will need to return to text entry, highlight the spoiler text, and click the "SP" spoiler icon.

Fair warning to friends from Booklikes, Goodreads, Visual Bookshelf (defunct), Leafmarks (defunct), Shelfari (defunct), Bookworm (defunct) and Reading Room (renamed and so changed may as well be defunct) -- if I start a reading journal thread here it will likely just echo my booklikes' reading progress updates. Different conversations here of course, but I doubt I'll get up to writing new updates.

As for updates, my main place is Wordpress and then I just copy/paste or paste a link to wordpress. I wouldn't bother following my Q1 thread here, as I'm going to start a Q2 one at the beginning of April.

For what it’s worth, I don’t find it nearly as annoying to see duplicate reviews here. It’s just between BL and GR that it's starting to drive me nuts. One of the (many) things I like about doing this in a message forum is that everything is grouped by person instead of all being mixed together. This keeps duplicate reviews from people I’m following elsewhere from drowning out new reviews from people I don’t follow elsewhere.
It’s also nice to have that continuity of seeing all of one person’s posts in a row. On BL, I read from the top down because I don't have the patience for all the scrolling. Now and then there are some posts that make no sense until I’ve read 10+ hours’ worth of posts and finally reached the post that started it all. :)
