LT Android app (Alpha/Beta)
Join LibraryThing to post.
When deselecting amazon as a source, it still shows results from amazon, at the top.
Restarting the app, logging out/in, or rebooting phone has no effect.
eta: Sony Xperia Z5 Compact - android 7.0 (patch 1-dec-2016)
Tried to add a book after searching by ISBN 0345339088, sources came up with amazon (see >1 JerryMmm: ) and Libris (sweden).
I added 2 collection where it should go, and the app crashed.
It did add the book to my catalog in the right collections.
I consider it a bug that you can't zoom when you want to edit a book.
If it's an unfinished feature that'd be ok.
I'll wait for the next update with further testing of features like uploading images. I assume there will be ways to edit and upload from within the app like with the ios app.
Thank you all for your bug reports.
Let's keep everything in one thread, until the Alpha becomes a Beta, at least.
My advice is: Keep it light on the reports--don't do super-deep dives. Chances are conceptDawg already knows of the bug. And the whole thing is still wet clay.
Thanks for the reports here. These are good.
>3 JerryMmm: The android version will match the features on the iOS app. Not all of them are in the alpha.
I'm not sure what you mean by zooming when editing. Can you explain?
BTW, another version was released last night with lots of crash fixes, some updated graphics, and you can now delete books by dragging left in list mode like you can in iOS.
>5 conceptDawg: aargh, I had forgotten the "accidentally slip and delete" feature mentioned on the IOS app. Is there an undelete or confirm? if not I fear the app may be too dangerous to use. (Yes, losing data scares me)
>6 TimSharrock: Well, it DOES take two actions, not just one. You slide and then you have to confirm. So it's not so easy to do it by accident.
>7 conceptDawg: Whew! That one worried me too. I wonder if Android users are going to be familiar with slide left to delete? It seems opposite to the standard slide right to dismiss action for Android events.
version 1.0 18-apr-2017
>5 conceptDawg: I click on Your Catalog, All Collections, top result, bottom edit (1), the screen is showing something like the lt.com edit book page, and can't be zoomed in.
Could it be related to the annoying behaviour on the old mobile site you also couldn't zoom in?
(1) the placement of the edit book vs the edit collections is annoying; because the edit collections is at the top, it intuitively feels like it should be edit book.
Yeah, I'm not going to want to delete books. So I may not be installing the app. Even with a confirm it would be annoying to need to cancel it out all the time after an accidental touch.
After going to sleep, the phone that is, the app crashes each time I open it up again and try to do something.
BTW I'm not complaining, completely understand it's alpha. Just wanna help.
>12 JerryMmm: Thanks for the report. That's exactly what the alpha is for. Most of our staff are iOS so we only have 2 or 3 people testing it (albeit on various devices) in-house.
Mo people is betta.
>13 conceptDawg: Thanks for the heads-up. I've installed it, but so far haven't seen anything buggish worth reporting :-)
I'm running android 4.1.2 on an LG-E510.
One behaviour, that might be a bug?
When I look at one of my collections, i.e. Tranebøger, I get a very small icon for each book. That's nice, i.e. Farligt otium by Graham Greene an a small icon. If I press this I get to see a bit more about this single book and a larger icon, but that icon is completely black. If I press that I get a larger image that fills the whole screen and looks as expected.
>10 JerryMmm: Yes, I'm also seeing an unzoomable edit page, that is very very tiny.
I like the design!
One issue for me- when looking at individual books in the catalogue, the link at the bottom of the page saying "view on LibraryThing" doesn't seem to work. The link to Amazon seems to work okay.
On a Moto E.
Thanks for the reports. We'll take a look at them. We've been trying to release new versions every other day or so. So be on the lookout.
Question for those who have tried it:
How easy is it to accidentally slip-and-delete? If it needs a big vigorous swipe all the way across the screen, that's probably okay; if it just needs an accidental sideways nudge, nope nope nope. (I've never used a dating app or the like so the swipe-means-gone gesture isn't one I have a lot of familiarity with.)
Maybe I'll install it for my kid's account, where I care a lot less about a single accidental deletion.
Update to my 18, since nobody wanted to answer:
It's very easy to accidentally slip and call up the "delete" dialog when you're trying to just tap on a book - the slightest leftward motion of your finger will do it on my phone. However in a bit if testing with my kid's account I didn't end up accidentally hitting the confirm at the same time, so I think it may be safe to use for my account in very limited circumstances, which is the only case I'd use it anyway (in a bookstore or library, to see if I have a particular book or check my wishlist).
I'd still prefer the user app because of the offline capability. But the official app could be useful for adding books. When the edit book part gets made.
one wish-list item: landscape mode (I am likely to be using it on a Pixel C tablet with keyboard, which is a bit hard to use in portrait mode.
Is this still the thread for bug reports? Nothing here since the end of April.
So here's my issues:
Phone Galaxy S4, Android 5.0.1
Add Books: Could NOT get the bar code scanner to focus. Kept having to go out to teh camera to focus, then come back to the app. Still wouldn't find the bar code.
Also: When you open a light box, even after tapping the light box to acknowledge it as the focus, the scroll is still on the screen behind it, so I can't use it to go through lists on the light box.
Are you using the latest version of the Beta? Made some changes to barcode focusing in one of the recent versions and would like to know if things are working better or are still broken.
>25 vanderz: Are you an LT employee? If so, you should figure out how to get the L next to your name.
>25 vanderz: This was happening last night about 5 pm. I got an update overnight, if the changes were made yesterday.
Just tested it again, still same issue. Won't focus on the barcode to be able to scan it.
>26 jjwilson61: Yes/no. John is our app co-developer (along with regular staffer Chris H./conceptDawg). You might see him around on threads involving the app specifically, like this one! But he's not a one of our full-time, dedicated staff members, and his account doesn't have certain admin privileges, which is why it's missing the 'L' there.
Open lt app
Goto Your Catalog
Enter a collection
Open a book
Tap the camera icon beneath the cover (blank or custom)
>28 lorannen: his account doesn't have certain admin privileges, which is why it's missing the 'L' there
It's a lot easier to parse a thread when the ex cathedra postings of LT's staff are identified as such. It would be worthwhile to give part time/consulting staff the ability to do so without compromising other internal controls.
It might suffice to have them add the gif as a signature to their posts:
Barcode focus didn't work last night with latest update.
Had to focus in camera app, then it was focussed in lt app.
Having same issue no focus with barcode scanner. Galaxy S6+ edge. Updated today.
Build 12, still crashing when tapping the camera icon beneath the cover in the book page.
>34 JerryMmm: Could you check Build 13. If it still doesn't work, you should get an error dialog with some information. Could you post that information?
>34 JerryMmm: Could you check Build 13. If it still doesn't work, you should get an error dialog with some information. Could you post that information?
Sorry, was signed in as test account.
Lyndatrue sent me over here from another thread.
My question is what controls the sequence of titles appearing in the LT Adroid ap? I'm referring to clicking on "Your Catalog" on the home screen. I have the same question about the "Cover Explorer".
The techy stuff: Version 1.0 (build 12)
I'm on a Samsung S4 running whatever is the latest Android version that has been pushed. I normally update within a day or so of receiving it as long as no string of problems pop up in Google when I search it.
>38 ulmannc: Do you mean the order that the books are shown within a collection? You can change the order by clicking the icon in the top right that has up and down arrows. By default, it is sorted with most recently added books shown first.
>39 vanderz:. Thanks for the info. I looked under a lot of covers (not books!) in the software but not that one!
>37 vanderz: camera icon works better now, gives an error message but if I tap around it I can make a picture. No focus yet thoug.
Question: when searching for a title, n the results some show as 'duplicate copy' .
F.ex. Deception point
What is it a duplicate copy of?
Some of the same author/title combos don't have the designation.
>44 JerryMmm: 'Duplicate copy' shows up when you're searching for a book to add under Recently Added or scanning a book's barcode. It lets you know that you already have a copy of that work in your library.
If that message is showing up somewhere else, please let us know.
Build 14 has been uploaded to the Google Play Store. Would people who have been having problems with the barcode scanner check if this version works better?
>43 JerryMmm: We separated the error messages in Build 14. Would you mind testing the cover editor and letting us know what the error message is?
Also, would you let us know what device and Android version you are using?
Error msg only says
preview size: 720x480
now, tapping outside the box or on cancel now results in you being able to take a picture, wit it seems proper focus and light correction.
So it seems to work well now, despite the error msg. Good work!
Re versions, phone see >1 JerryMmm:
Scanner works well as well, even in low light.
Next issue is the noise/sound when scanning. The icon doesn't change after 1 tap. And after a second tap, the sound icon is showing, so I assume sound should appear, but there's none.
Initially there was a beep, even though the icon was crossed out, but after tapping and going back a few times it now remains silent no matter what is showing.
Well, just tried some more, and the behaviour is erratic, and counterintuitive, at least to me.
The flash icon behaves more as expected, also because there is an immediate result of the action.
It's probably because you have to tap the sound icon twice, that is where you should look.
>46 vanderz: ... barcode scanner ... works better?
The good news: the scanner now seems to be working.
The not so good news: the app stores the scanned Bookland EAN number in the ISBN field, instead of converting it to the corresponding ISBN number.
LT App: Version 1.0 (build 14)
Android: Version: 6.0.1
Device: Samsung Galaxy Sky
From what I can find from Googling, a Bookland EAN *is* an ISBN. That is, it's an ISBN with a country code of "no country" aka Bookland and the rest is the same as an EAN. But the point is that the resulting number is an ISBN and so it belongs in the ISBN field.
>51 jjwilson61: a Bookland EAN *is* an ISBN
I agree. The source I used described them as being equivalent and mutually convertible. It's EAN-13 and the (relatively) new ISBN-13 numbers that are identical. The book I entered was published prior to 2005 and has an assigned ISBN-10 number which does need a conversion.
That leads to other questions. Is it always valid to store a derived ISBN-13 number for a book officially assigned an ISBN-10 number? Will library retrieval systems compute the original ISBN-10 number if the search for the new EAN-13/ISBN-13 number fails?
Note added (to bring this back on-topic):
Perhaps the App could check the publication date and if it's prior to 2007 (the year ISBN-13s started), store the derived ISBN-10 number instead.
Note II added :
A search of Overcat using the EAN-13/ISBN-13 number scanned by the App returned 5 results, including the German source with an incorrect title, selected by the App. The same search using the book's original assigned ISBN-10 number returned 69 results. The choice of format does seem to have consequences.
Note III added:
In case anyone's interested, the book is:
Title: The Leatherstocking Tales, Volume I by James Fenimore Cooper
Publisher: The Library of America, 1985, Sixth printing
>46 vanderz: I updated to version 14. I'm running on a Samsung Galaxy S4. Android version is 5.0.1 It does make a rather strange almost 'honking' sound when the scan is performed and it did find the book.
>46 vanderz: Scanner is now getting focus but may or may not give results, it's still a little wonky. I scanned barcode for isbn 0679806288 and get "A list of the descendants of Mr. Joshua Woodman..." Adding the book in the web page gives the correct result.
Samsung galaxy S6 edge+ Android 7.0
PS: The app got hung up installing as well. Downloaded 100% but did not give installing message. I closed out google play reopened it and the app was installed.
The first time it happened I was trying to update so I uninstalled appp, restarted phone and then installed app fresh. Still hung up.
I bought a new (cheap) phone (Alcatel Pixi 4) and the LT app won't install on it. I get a message in Danish which translates to "app not compatible with your unit". The old phone is running android 4.0 and the new one 6.0.
>46 vanderz:. I was looking at a new book I entered on the website, https://www.librarything.com/work/836167/edit/141870932 , and when I looked at it on the Android version, my private comments showed up.
I loaded the android system, I think it was version 11, and when I looked at a book I had loaded on the website, fields I had entered (comments and private comments as examples) didn't show up. Now when I look at the same book on version 14, the fields above now show up. Did something change? The test book I was using was https://www.librarything.com/work/18066262/edit/132263761
If it did and allows these fields and others to show up. Please DO NOT CHANGE IT BACK. That is what I want to be able to see!!
I'm running on a Samsung Galaxy S4. Android version is 5.0.1
>54 tarpfarmer: The barcode scanner does get numbers wrong every now and then. Would you mind trying to scan the book again?
>55 bnielsen: That is odd. It should be compatible. Are you having issues installing any other apps?
>56 ulmannc: Don't worry. They are there to stay. Several sections were missing from the book info page in earlier versions of the app.
>57 vanderz: The barcode scanner does get numbers wrong every now and then
Does the App recalculate the check digit to minimize that possibility?
Edited to add this:
From this reference: http://www-math.ucdenver.edu/~wcherowi/courses/m7409/errschemes.pdf
... because the check digit of the ISBN is
not encoded by BookLand [ISBN-13], this bar code loses the capability of
detecting all transposition errors which the ISBN had. Thus, in
order to gain optical scanner capability, a fairly good error
detecting code was replaced by a mediocre one
>57 vanderz: I updated the app. First scan I got the Rat Problem (not sure where that came from), deleted that one, second time I got Joshua Woodman again.
Upon further investigation it appears the number that the scanner is picking up is not the isbn but the LCCN 09015180.
I scanned 5 other books and got good results. Plus the scanner is quite snappy. Big improvement in focus and capture!
>62 tarpfarmer: It sounds like your scanning the wrong barcode. Is there another barcode somewhere else in the book?
>63 jjwilson61: Nope. It's the regular isbn barcode. I just think they might have made an error in the bar code itself because the other books I scanned are fine. I know that sometimes mass market paperback cover barcodes are not isbn and the true barcode is on the inside cover but this is a hardcover picture book. If I knew how I'd show a screen shot of the barcode.
>64 tarpfarmer: If you'd like to take a screenshot and post it, this should help: https://en.support.wordpress.com/make-a-screenshot/.
>66 JerryMmm: Hah, clearly I didn't drink enough coffee yesterday! I thought something seemed off.
>65 kristilabrie: I should have said I don't know how to post a screenshot here in a message :-)
Do I copy and paste a photo?
>68 tarpfarmer: You can just email us the image at email@example.com. If you want to add an image to a post on LT, you can go to "Add another picture" in your picture gallery—probably your "Junk drawer" rather than your "Member gallery", if it's not something you care to show off to other members—here: https://www.librarything.com/gallery/member/tarpfarmer.
After uploading the image to your gallery, right-click on the image to copy the image address/URL and paste it into a post by using the img src tag like so:
<img src="IMAGE URL HERE">
(replace IMAGE URL HERE with the actual image URL).
Verizon network, Samsung Galaxy S4, Android 5.0.1
App version 1.0, build (Can't remember if it was 16 or 17)
For Add to Catalog sources, I have Amazon UNCHECKED. I also have Quick Find on. Libraries are first (and checked) with Amazon second. I scanned the barcode of the above linked book, and it came in clean. Good... Until I look at the source. Amazon.com books. Not what I requested.
>58 vanderz: Tried to install the App again on the Pixi 4 and this time it worked without problems.
The LibraryThing Android app is officially here!
Blog post: http://blog.librarything.com/main/2017/06/librarything-android/
If you're active on this thread, you've probably already got it on your device. Thanks so much for your help in testing the unreleased version. We pushed an update late last night, so you may want to update your app when you get the chance.
