THE NATIONAL BOOK AWARDS

On March 16, 1950, publishers, editors, writers, and critics gathered at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York City to celebrate the first annual National Book Awards. The first awards were given to writers by writers. Awards were given for fiction, non-fiction and poetry.
Changes in categories and the eligibility of judges have changed several times since 1950. In 1986 the publishing community established The National Book Foundation, a not-for-profit organization to oversee the Awards, diversify their base of philanthropic support and expand their mission.
From 1986 to 1990, independent panels of writers chose the National Book Award Winners in the categories of only Fiction and Nonfiction. The National Book Foundation reinstituted the Poetry Award in 1991 and launched the Award for Young People's Literature in 1996. In 2013, the judging panels were opened to non-writers with significant literary expertise in each category.
Winners by genre from 1950 to 2015 can be found here: http://www.nationalbook.org/nbawinners_category.html#.WRoZL2grLIU
Winners and longlist for 2016 are here: http://www.nationalbook.org/nba2016.html#.WRoaNWgrLIU
The 2017 longlist will be announced September 12 - 16.

I plan to read either Atticus or Stones for Ibarra. Either one will work for both awards! :-)

For the National Book Award I'm going to read Dale Loves Sophie to Death. It won best novel in 1982.

I'm going to read News of the World, one of last year's finalists for the National Book Award.

Another one I'd hoped to figure out this past weekend, but I haven't yet gotten to it. Posting, though, as a reminder to come back and do so!

My intention is to read The Turner House by Angela Flournoy which was on the longlist in 2015 for the National Book Award.

Just curious, what's the difference between the PEN/Faulkner award and the PEN/Hemingway award?
10LibraryCin
Either way, it looks like (using tags, anyway), the only one on my tbr is:
We Are All Completely Beside Ourselves / Karen Joy Fowler
Too many holds on the ebook, but I've put a hold on the audio and it looks like I'm next for it.

The PEN/Faulkner Award honors the best work of fiction published by an American in a single calendar year. The largest peer-reviewed literary prize in the country, the PEN/Faulkner Award continues to recognize the finest American fiction being produced today.
The PEN/ HEMINGWAY AWARD is for a novel or book of short stories by an American author who has not previously published a full-length book of fiction.
In addition to $25,000, the winner also receives a one-week residency and $5,000 honorarium from the Distinguished Visiting Writers Series at the University of Idaho’s MFA Creative Writing Program. All competition honorees receive Residency Fellowships at the Ucross Foundation in Wyoming, a retreat for artists and writers.
The award is funded by the Hemingway Family, the Hemingway Foundation, and PEN New England. Major support is also provided by Mary & Kurt Cerulli.

I am planning on a couple of books, The Night of the Hunter by David Grubb which was a National Book Award finalist in 1955; and All the Pretty Horses by Cormac McCarthy which won in 1992.

I just picked up News of the World at the library last night, so will read it in June.

We Are All Completely Beside Ourselves / Karen Joy Fowler
4 stars
Rosemary is growing up with her brother, Lowell, and her sister, Fern, before Fern disappears when Rosemary is about 5 years old. Later, Lowell runs away and she doesn’t see him for years. When she does see him, he is on the run from the FBI. There is a lot more going on, particularly with Fern, but I don’t want to spoil it (just don’t look at the tags, though… it’s hard to avoid!)
I would have rated the first half (or 2/3) of the book “good”, at 3.5 stars, but I really liked the end, and wanted to give it 4.5. In the end, I averaged it out to 4 stars. I’d really like to say what I liked about it, but anyone who has read it and who knows me can probably guess. It might be a bit of a spoiler to say. Ugh! Hard to write a review without spoilers on this one! I listened to the audio and it was well done. I rarely lost focus.

>16 LibraryCin:, I read this one last year.I gave it 3.5 stars. I wonder how I would rate it now with my new rubrics that I am using. It has stuck with me, that is a also a sign to me of a pretty good book.

And for the National Book Award, Another Brooklyn: a novel by Jacqueline Woodson.

I have completed the 1955 finalist for the National Award, The Night of the Hunter by Davis Grubb, a great read and I couldn't help but picture Robert Mitchum as the vicious killer due to his extraordinary performance in the 1955 film.

Took me an extra day, but I finished my award book The Turner House by Angela Flournoy which was a National Book Award 2015 fiction finalist.
