Folio Archives : Queen Victoria's Journal of Our Life in the Highlandss

One of the earliest Limited Editions in the current Folio Society series (the fourth in the series), and published in 2002, is the often overlooked “Leaves from the Journal of Our Life in the Highlands from 1848 to 1861” written by Queen Victoria. There are numerous interspersed black and white etchings, and scattered full page coloured plates that come from the Royal Collection.
There are 205 pages, it is in a very plain solander box (31.7 x 26 cm.) that annoyingly has no title on the spine and only the royal crest on the cover. The limitation was a quite generous 1850 and its original price was £145.
The book itself is bound in buckram with a gloriously intricate inlaid design in gold and black on the front cover and spine.
It is now very reasonably priced on the secondary market.

This is a very lovely book with a suitably Victorian binding. For some reason many collectors don't class it as a "true" LE, yet it ticks all the boxes. That, and maybe the high limitation keeps its price well down on the secondary market - certainly it' s the cheapest LE I've bought, and one of the first. As Warwick points out, the anonymous spine is an irritation which leads me to pick it from the shelf less often than I should. Having now been reminded of the contents it is an omission I shall rectify tonight.

I would love to get my hands on this one - I love literature and information from the Victorian era. Letters to Vicky is one of my favorite FS editions. Thank you for the pictures and additional information.

This is one of my favourite LEs. It is actually based on the first illustrated edition published by Smith Elder in 1868. The FS binding is almost identical but the stag on the front has a bit more gilt than the original. Also, the 1868 version only had two coloured plates. Folio added a few more from other sources.

A revised and superior edition by the Folio Society in an elaborate binding with lots of gilt and housed in a box.
Limited to 1850 numbered copies this being 285.
The book is as new, the box is as new, no names, no marks, no stains. A perfect item.

Congratulations--I picked up one second-hand at an even cheaper price point ($20.00, as I recall). I think some book sellers must have confused the LE with the regular edition.

I paid £24 for mine.

Purchased at auction last month for £28, although commission and p&p almost doubled the cost. A perfect package for what I felt was a bargain.
Spotted here first.

I really like the look of this one and am very interested in the Victorian era, so thank you for posting and I shall be looking for a copy soon!
