Ninth labour: Belt of Hippolyta
Eurystheus' daughter Admete wanted the Belt of Hippolyta, queen of the Amazons, a gift from her father Ares. To please his daughter, Eurystheus ordered Hercules to retrieve the Belt as his ninth labour.
Taking a band of friends with him, Hercules set sail, stopping at the island of Paros, which was inhabited by some sons of Minos. The sons killed two of Hercules' companions, an act which set Hercules on a rampage. He killed two of the sons of Minos and threatened the other inhabitants until he was offered two men to replace his fallen companions. Hercules agreed and took two of Minos' grandsons, Alcaeus and Sthenelus. They continued their voyage and landed at the court of Lycus, whom Hercules defended in a battle against King Mygdon of Bebryces. After killing King Mygdon, Hercules gave much of the land to his friend Lycus. Lycus called the land Heraclea. The crew then set off for Themiscyra where Hippolyta lived.
All would have gone well for Hercules had it not been for Hera. Hippolyta, impressed with Hercules and his exploits, agreed to give him the belt and would have done so had Hera not disguised herself and walked among the Amazons sowing seeds of distrust. She claimed the strangers were plotting to carry off the queen of the Amazons. Alarmed, the women set off on horseback to confront Hercules. When Hercules saw them, he thought Hippolyta had been plotting such treachery all along and had never meant to hand over the Belt, so he killed her, took the Belt and returned to Eurystheus.

We made it, we are still on target to reach our goal! However, I have noticed that several people are way behind.
I would like to suggest that if you are less that 20% toward your goal, that you might want to reduce your target and give yourself a fighting chance to make it at the end.
Below is the current list of members that have identified a ROOT goal for 2017 and how many books they read by the end of August.
The percentage is calculated and a star awarded for those on target to reach their goals. More stars for farther toward their goal.
If anyone's number is incorrect, please let me know and I will make the necessary adjustments.
So go out there and dig those ROOTs.

Looking at a couple of nights in the low fifties F thiscoming week. May have to have a fire in the fireplace, a cat or two on the lap and a nice fat novel in the hand. Lime Spouse and I just started a read aloud that is not a ROOT. Have mercy.
Almost finished with War Trash. Honestly, I don't want it to end.
Thanks to our "feerless cheerleader," and congratulations to those ROOTers who have crossed the finish line. Bravo to those among us who are on schedule, and nose to the bookmark those of you distracted by the lovely days of late summer, or who are suffering from aftermath of Harvey. We salute you! Brace for Hurricane Irma; it doesn't look good.

Well done to all those who have reached their goals!!
And I am doing a little happy dance as I regained not one but two more stars!! That's specially good as so far I haven't read a single ROOT this month.
Chèli, hope that things go well with your surgery and that you recuperate quickly.

Continuing with my Lucy Maud Montgomery marathon, Anne of the Island and Tales of Avonlea. This is actually a three-fer volume, Anne of the Island being the third in the series and Tale of Avonlea referring to the short-story compilations Chronicles of Avonlea and Further Chronicles of Avonlea. Overall, I give Anne of the Island 4**** (down from 4½**** for Anne of Avonlea and 5***** for Anne of Green Gables). I think most tend to agree that the series weakens as it goes on (except for the outstanding Rilla of Ingleside), but I'll wait and see.
The two story compilations, however, generously rate 2½** overall. While there are some reasonably decent stories among them, they tend overall to be very predictable. Considering this is a three-fer volume, I've rated the volume overall at 3½***, considering that Anne of the Island is really its more important component and thus dropping just ½ from the overall volume because of the weakness of the stories.
In fairness to Montgomery, incidentally, the publication of these stories was something undertaken by her unscrupulous publisher, L.C. Page {Wikipedia}, with whom she engaged in significant copyright litigation. So don't blame Montgomery for this anthologization of stories first published in magazines and overall of rather poor quality.
1st for September, 53/75.

I have read 3 ROOTs for September. 34 for the year. I see Chèli has already included them in my total number. Doing nothing to the group tickers.
Thanks, Chèli for doing all the hard work.
Just one little question: Should this not be the ninth labor as it is September?

I have just updated my LT account with the books I recently discarded and therefore I saw that I discarded quite a few books.
Recently I was book shopping wuite a lot on book sales of different libraries and therefore added loads of books to the TBR. On second glance these books weren't so readable after all and I discarded them again. All in all I have discarded 17 books this year. As I am counting this as ROOTs as well, I overexceeded my goal of 12! To my shame, I didn't manage a single real ROOT, but read a few of the newly added books.
Fongratulations to everyone who already reached their goals and a loud cheer to all who still work towrads it! You can make it!

Hey everyone!
Just wanted to give you and update of what's going on.
Saw the surgeon this morning and on Monday I will be going into surgery to see what is wrong with my shoulder/arm and hopefully have it repaired. I was told if I have a tear (which he thinks I do) my arm will immobilized for 4 WEEKS! (My husband says he's buying a gun.) I will be making a new best friend with my Nursing assistant who will be spending 8-9 hours a day with me doing all the things for me that I can't do.
Thank God for audio books and e-books because there is no way that I could hold a regular book without my left hand.
Needless to say one-handed I will be a bit slower with the update for October unless of course, the doctor gives good news and doesn't immobilize my arm.
Either way he says I will be ready for my trip in January. (Tim said I was going even if he had to take me on a gurney or in a wheelchair.)

I didn't get my star back, though I tried...
However, the non-fiction group has a "Gods, Spirits..." sort of topic for September, and I found about eight (8!!!) books that I bought in 2015 and that aren't chunksters, so getting most of those done is possible.
I'm also looking at the top shelves, at the books I've not read in several years, that I don't feel a great desire to read, so...
...I'm gonna get my star back, just watch!!!

3+ days without power is good for my reading self. I, too, finished my 12th and final book for this year's goal and am now working to surpass it. I don't know if this qualifies for something good coming out of something bad, but Irma helped me. However, I'm sober enough to be even happier for the return of running water, Internet, and MSNBC news.

I had to read up a bit on the history and look at some erudite book reviews - even so, I suspect a LOT went over my head!

>68 Henrik_Madsen: I was ambivalent about One Hundred Years of Solitude too. It seemed interminable - complicated, over-populated with characters and impenetrable magic realism - but I enjoyed some of the set pieces and really admired the author's intent to reflect the political history of his country in a novel about eight generations of a family, so I scored it highly. My second for the month is An Expert in Murder by Nicola Upson. 2.5/5

>52 cyderry: Hope the surgery went well Cheli. You need a book bean bag. i am onto my third. They are indispensable. I have completed 2 roots for the month and on to my third. Only 4 books to go to reach my goal...
78benitastrnad
I finished listening to another book that is part of my ROOT list. Cruel Crown is the last of the currently published novels in the Red Queen series by Victoria Aveyard. This one is actually two novellas and an excerpt from the second book in the series Glass Sword. As recording go - it was a good one. It had separate readers for the two novellas. That made it more interesting.
79leslie.98
Finished another cozy mystery that has been hanging out on my Kindle for years. I have updated my thread & all tickers.
80Robertgreaves
Starting my sixty-seventh ROOT (Something to Answer For by P. H. Newby). I might even manage to reach my goal this month, but it will be a tight finish if I do.
83rabbitprincess
Finished another ROOT on the plane home yesterday: Two Years Before the Mast, by Richard Henry Dana, Jr. This was a long-standing read (started it just over five months ago), so I'm glad to have it finished. All tickers have been updated.
85Henrik_Madsen
#38 completed: The Fishermen by Chigozie Obioma. I'm closing in on my goal for the year.
86floremolla
The problem with juggling four books at a time is that it takes a long time to get one completed! My first ROOT for September was a Big Fat Book - The Crimson Petal and The White by Michel Faber (review on my thread). That makes 51/60 ROOTs for the year so far. All tickers updated.
I'm halfway through Summertime by JM Coetzee and several chapters into Culloden by John Prebble. These two should be completed before the end of the month. I like to think I'm 'pacing myself' rather than sprinting to the end. ;)
I've also succumbed to one non-ROOT, The Fruits of The Earth by André Gide which I thought would be a quick read but was dense and ponderous. It's on the 1001 BYMRBYD list.

>86 floremolla: I'm pacing myself too, and I'm horrified to discover we're at the 20th already! (not least because I've acquired loads of books this month, but let's not go there). I'd better get a move on, although if not then I will have a bumper month of ROOTs in October!
88floremolla
>87 Jackie_K: yes, September is flying by! I think it was you who pointed out to me that my goal was achievable if I read three ROOTs per month for the rest of the year. So that's what I'm doing - clearly, I've no ability to think beyond the last suggestion put to me :)
89HelenBaker
Another root. Only 3 to goo to reach my goal.

I have finished another paperback ROOT. My thread & all tickers updated.

No new roots to report, but I got back from my holiday today so now have time to focus on some serious ROOT reading - I am determined to keep my star, so have to hurry up a bit :)
92Jackie_K
Ah, well my ROOTs progress is dismal this month (*still* no ROOTs finished for the month, although I have several around 50% finished), but at least I can do something constructive and add some fluff to this thread to increase the likelihood of reaching 150 posts!
93clue
I read 4 ROOTS each month. When I posted yesterday I thought I had finished my fourth for September but last night realized something was off. The off was that I've only read 3. Right now I'm reading two books that are not ROOTS, as soon as I finish one I'll get started on another of the TBRs. I should be able to finish it before month end. I've been very busy lately but I've had a conference to plan and it's Saturday. After that I get a break, can't wait!
94Robertgreaves
Two more ROOTS down, Marx: A Very Short Introduction by Peter Singer and A Wrinkle In Time by Madeleine L'Engle
95floremolla
Second ROOT for September completed yesterday - Summertime by JM Coetzee - taking my total to 52/60 for 2017. All tickers updated. Feeling quietly confident I'll finish Culloden before the end of the month - sooner I do, the sooner I can get into the new (to me) acquisitions :)

I've hit my goal of 20 ROOTs for the year.
I made better progress than I expected thanks to all the encouraging messages.

Nearly 2 months since my last ROOT thanks to a long list of library books and a new job that leaves less time to read. Only 3 more library books on request and 2 more to read and then it will need to be all ROOTs for me.
It has been long enough that I am now looking longingly at my shelves for the ROOTs to be read in 2017.

I finished reading Birds of a Feather the second Maisie Dobbs book, and thought I would get another volume off my shelves. Of course, I found a cheap copy of the third book in that series so I had to purchase that. One out - one in. No gain.

Congrats to all who have met their goals and to each of you out there reading your ROOTS! I love this challenge.

73. They Were Sisters by Dorothy Whipple; (5*); acquired 11/16/2009
74. Agnes Grey by Anne Bronte; (2 1/2*); acquired 1/31/2013
75. The Notebook by Nicholas Sparks; (4*); acquired 9/09/2007
76. The Memory of Old Jack by Wendell Berry; (5*); acquired 9/09/2007
77. The Little Grey Men by Denys Watkins-Pitchford or "BB"; (5*); acquired 8/30/2007

I will update my ticker at the month's end.

Got 1 more manga last night which puts me at 27/50. Which means I only have to read about 5 a month for the next three months which is totally doable. Considering how far behind I was I'm very excited! Not having internet at home does wonders for your reading! ;)
141CurrerBell
Norton Juster, The Phantom Tollbooth
Melissa Scott, Night Sky Mine
Thought I'd posted these two to this thread already, but I looks like I missed them.

Finally got one to add for this month - first month of 2017 when I haven't managed to finish at least 4 in the month (but luckily I've read enough more than that in other months to still be ahead of my target overall). I've updated all tickers, mine and the group.

Maisie Dobbs by Jacqueline Winspear
Flyte by Angie Sage - this was a sound recording
Cruel Crown by Victoria Aveyard - this was a sound recording and the latest title in a series so now I am caught up with the series
Birds of a Feather by Jacqueline Winspear
Skeleton Man by Tony Hillerman - this was a sound recording
I was afraid that I was going to be cutting my goal close and not getting it finished until October but I finished in August and now I am surpassing it.

September was a more successful month for me than I was expecting: I managed 3 ROOTs and have met my target for the year!
Being in this group has really helped me, even if I haven't been a very sociable member. Thank you @cyderry for organising us and I'm sorry to hear about your health woes. I hope you're continuing to make a good recovery.
I'd like to concentrate on some new acquisitions now I've met my goal, but I'm sure I'll manage a few more ROOTs too and help bump up the group total. I also plan to visit some threads - finally - and see what everyone else is reading!
ETA: I've updated my personal ticker only.

@cyderry I have just realised that although I haven't been updating the group tickers with the ROOTs I've finished in October so far, I have been updating my own. I only read the one book in September, and at that point my year-to-date total was 41. My ticker is currently reading 44 as I have finished 3 in October already. Just thought I'd better clarify that to avoid any confusion when you're doing the figures. I will add the 3 October ROOTs to the group tickers once the October thread is up and running.
