What does Tag Canonization mean?

I see that there's a helper badge for Tag Canonization. What does that mean, exactly?

Well, like duh--the badges are awarded to members who can attest to miracles wrought by the use of a beatified tag that has now scaled the pinnacle of sanctity.

The intention of the feature added to change the canonical form of a tag is that it be used only in cases where the most common or currently winning form is manifestly incorrect or not in English. It should therefore not be used for things like upper/lower-case preferences or other personal preferences that might result in edit wars.

A badge is handed out for helping out with these (bronze at 5 items, silver at 50, gold at 100).

Shouldn't that be Tag Canonicalization? Or are we making holy tags?

Well, if the tags aren't holy how do you expect me to tie them to the gift boxes?
