So, the original suggestion came from LadyoftheLodge here (this is the post that includes some suggested topics):
http://www.librarything.com/topic/312074#6947536
Here are some of the suggested themes:
"A travel narrative
Related to food or drink from a specific location/country/region
Festival or event
Occurring or related to each of the continents (Asia, Europe, South America, North America, and so on, which would cover seven months)
In translation
Related to a place where you do not live
Related to a place you would like to visit
Modes of transportation (sea, air, rail, driving, etc)
Myths or legends from a specific region/country/location"
Is this too close to GeoCAT? I feel like it's different, personally, so I'd like to give this a try if there is more interest.
Finalized Months:
January: City vs. countryside--LibraryCin
February: In translation--LisaMorr
March: Tourist meccas--mstrust
April: Related to a place where you do not live--LadyoftheLodge
May: Modes of transportation (sea, air, rail, driving, etc)--NinieB
June: Legendary places, such as Camelot, Atlantis, Avalon--majkia
July: Myths or legends from a specific region/country/location--HelenGress
August: Travel Narratives--Ladyof theLodge
September: Festival or event--antqueen
October: Related to food or drink from a specific location/country/region--JayneCM
November: Living in a New Country--Dejah_Thoris
December: Related to a Place You Would Like to Visit--Kristelh
The wiki is also now set up here:

I like these kinds of prompts; they allow for creativity and variety but also a bit of challenge. I'd be interested.
5MissWatson
This looks like a good place for spontaneous reading, as the prompts are quite broad.
7LadyoftheLodge
I like it (especially since it was my idea). I think it is different from GeoCAT. I would be happy to host any month. How many participants would we need to make this a go?
9LadyoftheLodge
I do not know how to set up a wiki for this, but would like to see it go. I do not mind setting up the main thread.
10LibraryCin
>9 LadyoftheLodge: I'm happy to set up the wiki. Did we want to vote on the different options? I guess we should count how many there are first.
How many people are willing to host a month, as well?
I will. I will do two, if necessary, but I don't want to do any more than two.

14Tess_W
related to a continent is very like the geo cat. How about legendary places: Atlantis, 7 Cities of Cibola, Avalon, etc.?
15LadyoftheLodge
Yes, the legendary places is a good one.
16LadyoftheLodge
>12 majkia: I like those ideas too.
17LadyoftheLodge
Thanks for placing the information in the first thread. >1 LibraryCin: and for setting up the wiki too.
18mstrust
If all the choices are up for grabs, I have collections of travel memoirs that are specific to England, London or New England. That could fit "travel narrative", "a place where you do not live" or "tourist meccas". Drop me into whatever slot you'd like.

>17 LadyoftheLodge: (Occurring or related to each of the continents (Asia, Europe, South America, North America, and so on, which would cover seven months)--maybe too much like GeoCAT??
I agree. Let's try to keep a bit more separate topics as compared to how GeoCAT is set up.

I will take April, Related to a place where you do not live, unless someone else wants that one. The rest are up for grabs!

I have started the wiki, and I'll fill in the remaining months once we have them decided:

I will also edit the first post in this thread to indicate who is doing which month and which theme. I find it's sometimes easier to be able to just refer to that first post.
LadyoftheLodge is leading the rest of the planning, but I thought it might be helpful to also have the information in that first post.

I noticed that both TravelKIT and KITastrophe are at about half full for hosting. Would it make sense to combine the two KITs? There is some common ground.
39LadyoftheLodge
>38 NinieB: That is an idea! I am always flexible. What do others think here?
40sallylou61
>38 NinieB:, >39 LadyoftheLodge: The two KITs have different purposes, and I would prefer not to combine them even though several KITs have been suggested. The KITastrophe (or DisasterKIT) is concerned with disasters anywhere they may occur in real places. The TravelKIT is concerned with travel accounts, myths and legends, legendary (make-believe) places, etc. The only topic they might have in common is modes of transportation which in TravelKIT does not specify transportation disasters.

Ok, hopefully I have that fixed to everyone's satisfaction.
Does this look ok?
June: majkia - Legendary places, such as Camelot, Atlantis, Avalon
September: antqueen - Festival or event
November: Travel Narratives--Dejah_Thoris
My apologies for missing the Legedary places in June for majkia!

I've had a thought - how would people feel about a "Moving to a Foreign Country" theme? I realize it's not quite the same a traveling, but I think it's in keeping with the feel of the kit. There are so many great books about buying/renovating a house someplace unfamiliar, marrying someone an moving to their country, accepting a job/teaching abroad/Peace Corps, etc., that I don't think it would be difficult to find options.
Any thoughts? I could swap Travel Narratives in November for it, host another month, or just let someone else use it.

I am new to this whole process- what does hosting a month entail? I like the idea of Myths or legends but need to understand what tasks I am volunteering for.
58LadyoftheLodge
>55 Dejah_Thoris: I like it! If you want to swap it, I am for it. I can take Travel Narratives for a month that is not taken yet. It is great that people are suggesting topics for our KIT. We are open to new suggestions in addition to the ones above in thread 1.
59LadyoftheLodge
>57 HelenGress: "Hosting a month" means creating the discussion thread for the KIT and including some explanation, quirky comments, graphics, or suggested books and authors to help participants choose their reading material.
How to create your page: Go to the main page, in this case 2020 Category Challenge page. Then click Post A New Topic. When that comes up it's your new page. In the subject box you will put the title, such as "January TravelKIT". Then type in your explanation, graphics, comments, etc. It does not have to be fancy or elaborate, just a way to get the topic up and running.
After you have finished with your page it's a good idea to copy the URL and post a message that it is up. Then in the message paste the URL with the note that the KIT for your month is up. It's just an easy way for people to see the new topic is ready.

Sure put me in for a month- doesn't matter which one- I have a few ideas for legend/ myth travel ideas if that topic is still up for grabs.
61LibraryCin
>55 Dejah_Thoris: once you confirm you'd like to swap topics, I'll change it in the first post. If you want to keep yours, but still add the additional topic suggestion, I can simply add it as another suggestion.
62LibraryCin
>60 HelenGress: I see that Legend/Myth is still available.
Are you ok if I put you in July (the next month available)? I'll do that for the moment, but I can change it if you'd prefer one of the other available months (August, October, December).
Keep in mind you'd be working on the post and posting it by the 15th of the previous month.

Is it worth doing this one again next year? Or is it too narrow a theme to do two years in a row?
We don't usually do two CATs in a row, but this wasn't a CAT this year. Do we propose to see if there is more interest in it as a CAT for next year? Thoughts?
