I read this book from my school library when I was in grade school in the late 1980s about a man searching for woman named Amaryllis. It's an old-fashioned, somewhat romantic story, and I thought the title was Amaryllis but all the stories I've Googled are not this one. It almost reminds me of Little Women, A Little Princess, The Secret Garden - that kind of old-fashioned. I think there was also an older gentleman who was somewhat like a mentor but it's been so long, I'm not too sure about this part. They find each other in the end. It made me look up the flower Amaryllis since I had no idea at the time about it.

Thanks for any help!

Not 'The Magic Garden' by Gene Stratton Porter? A boy meets a girl called Amaryllis. He goes on to become a musician, and they meet again as adults.https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/300789.The_Magic_Garden

Glad to help. I love all her books. And most of them are available on Kindle.

>5 sueelleker: Btw, just an update - I ended up buying "The Magic Garden" on AbeBooks and reread it the same day I got it. I've started thinking about the other books I read at my school library growing up and I'm about to order "All-of-a-Kind Family" to reread as well, despite not being Jewish. I love remembering the penny candy game they played and the chickpeas vendor scene.
