SantaThing Donations 2020

1mellymel171328
Nov 18, 2020, 1:11 pm

With great pleasure I am kicking off the 2020 SantaThing Donation Thread!
We have some rules this year for the donation thread!
Members will be eligible for SantaThing donations if they meet the following two criteria:

- They must have been a member for at least two months (so, their account must have been created no later than September 18, 2020).

- They must have at least 50 books cataloged in their account.*

*Suggestions! If you are in a rut with this one and unsure how to get your book amount up try this! Add books to your wishlist or books you have read but do not own. As long as the overall count is over 50 then you are good to go!
The former is not easy to get around, but it is fairly easy to add more books to one's account if you're not quite at the 50 book threshold yet. Should someone in this situation request a donation, either Mellymel171328 or katemcangus will contact them directly to encourage them to beef up their catalog first.
Please feel free to ask if you are in need of a donation! If you want to become a secret santa and give an anonymous donation please feel free to message me directly. 🙂

I've been on both sides of the donations. This year, I am going to plan to contribute. Will likely get to that on the weekend. Posting here as a reminder and to keep up with the conversation.

I would like to kindly ask for a donation for my autistic 9y.o son. He is such a smart cookie and absorbes knowledge like a sponge. He loves animals and dinosaurs and science and loves looking at books. He is learning how to read and it would be amazing to be able to have more books for him to learn from. Your kindness and generosity do not go unnoticed and I thank you very much.

I'm unsure if this is a joke or not, but if you are five, you cannot use LibraryThing, let alone SantaThing. You must be at least 13 years of age to use LibraryThing!

>12 ilgarcon:

Yes, if the account is run by an adult, that is fine. Unsupervised use is not. This is, after all, an essentially unpoliced social network.

14karenb
Nov 20, 2020, 3:36 am

I just want to say that simply asking for a donation is enough. You do not need to explain the why or how of your situation.

(So many of us have been there, and for so many reasons. Asking for help can be plenty difficult as it is.)

15mellymel171328
Nov 20, 2020, 9:50 am

>14 karenb: that is correct. However we still have to make sure that the rules are followed. There is an age limit for social media. Since in this case it is an adult running the page then it is perfectly fine for them to be on the list. :)

>12 ilgarcon: yes of course I'll put you on the list. Will you need a donation too?

I hate to ask again this year, but I could use a donation. My plan was to be a donor this year but I had Covid and pneumonia and was in the hospital for 7 days and ever since, things have been hard.

Thank you for putting this together every year, Mel! This event brings so much joy to a lot of us and that's a huge thing, especially with everything going on right now.

>40 timspalding: I will gladly explain how donations work. If anyone would like to make a donation all they have to do is go to https://www.librarything.com/santathing_giftpay.php . There will be 8 different paypal price points to choose from. Click the amount you would want to donate and at the end of the process you will be given a gift code. The code can be given directly to me, I keep them in a list in the order they are recieved and pass them out that way to keep it fair.

If there is anymore questions please feel free to ask.

I have extended SantaThing signup to 6pm EST. Basically, tomorrow is a packed day for me, and we're "down" a staff member—the employee who does the social media and member communication. So closing it at noon would be a rush, and we wouldn't be able to move to the next stage immediately anyway.

Good news: More time to sign up for SantaThing, and square up on donations!

I don't know if it's possible, being so late and all, but I'd love to receive a donation both for myself and the husband. (I'm FinnyB here on LibraryThing, I think he's going by Gavic (though I'm not positive--I'd have to find a way to check without letting him know, since I'm trying to surprise him)). This year is horrid--we'd hoped to donate, ourselves, but that's just not possible right now, sadly.

I am in need of a donation. My problem is I read on my Kindle because of my eyesight or other ebooks on my IPad. I don’t understand why Amazon limits itself to the U. S., I live and am registered in Canada. I could put on my ‘control the market hat’ but will refrain. The alternative is paperback large print which are pricey. Hardcovers are too heavy. Is it possible to purchase others ebooks compatible with an IPad?
I do appreciate LibraryThink and all it does in the book world. I have been a member since 2006.
Thank you. Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays 🎄📚🎄

Edited: Dec 3, 2020, 12:44 am

>80 hamrc:

I am sorry but the registration window for SantaThings had closed so you cannot register for it (and noone can donate to allow you to register).

And even if it was open, your account is too new to qualify for a donation (see >1 mellymel171328: : - They must have been a member for at least two months (so, their account must have been created no later than September 18, 2020).) and does not have enough books in it -- you need 50 (see >1 mellymel171328: again).

You will be in a position to ask for one next year if you need one though (and if you add more books). Happy Holidays!

>81 AnnieMod: that’s sad. It let me register for Santa thing. I have developmental disabilities that make it hard for me to add books to my account on my own. I already signed up for Santa thing but I was counting on a donation to be able to get the books. It’s sad

83mellymel171328
Dec 5, 2020, 8:30 am

>82 hamrc: I am sorry that it is so hard for you to add books to your library. Is there a friend or a family member that could help? Sadly you still do not meet the requirements to ask this year due to the age of your profile. Also you asked after sign up was closed as well.

I hate that I couldn't help you this year. However, you do seem to be signed up for $15.00 this year. So you should be getting at least one book in the mail.
