I am participating again. This is my
New Year's Eve check-in
Books read from: Water: The Epic Struggle for Wealth, Power, and Civilization by Steven Solomon. Invention of Morel by Adolfo Bioy Casares is my novella for the month of January. Book of Blood and Shadow by Robin Wasserman. Recorded book Thick as Thieves by Megan Whalen Turner is Book 5 in the Queen's Thief series.
Books finished: 0 - so far this weekend
Time reading: 1 hour this morning - but I read the newspapers instead of my book Water: The Epic Struggle for Wealth by Steve Solomon
Time posting:
Snacks: Breakfast was fresh grapefruit and coffee. For lunch I had chicken and dumplings. Supper will be soup.
Thoughts:Invention of Moral is a New York Review Classics entry. It is a novella by the LatinX author Adolfo Bioy Casares with an introduction by Jorge Luis Borges. It has proved to be an interesting macabre book.
I also started a YA novel Book of Blood and Shadow that I have been wanting to read for some time. So far it is starting out to be a typical YA novel.
Books finished: 0
Books Read From: 4
Total time reading: 1 hour
Total books finished since the read-a-thon began: 92
Total read from: 96

Sorry if I am posting too much...
Books read from: Take a girl like you by Kingsley Amis
Books finished: 0
Time reading: ~ 2 hours
Pages read: ~ 90 pages
Time posting: too much
Snacks: final Christmas cookies, Pasta Asciutta, ...maybe later a glas of yesterday's prosecco
Thoughts:
Love drifting from one free time activity to another without having to do anything.
Concerning the book: Despite the fact that it was published in 1960 it is entertaining. Of course, you have to keep the cliches and role models in mind, but it is very interesting to read a "live perspective" of emancipation in the 1960s.
Non-book activities:
* puzzling the "Alice-in-Wonderland" puzzle I got for Christmas while listening to the New Year's Concert by the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra (Here's the link if you are interested: https://youtu.be/dIPQGHdWbNs)
* taking care of my ratties
* sleeping

Just a brief check-in. I've been doing a bit of reading, but not much. Lost access to my Amazon account last month briefly and as a result have to reinstall everything on my Kindle (not just Kindle books but e-galleys, which is tricky). So I spent a lot of time doing that.
Books read from: 2, The Forgotten Kingdom by Signe Pike, and The Midnight Library by Matt Haig.
Books finished: None.
Time reading: About two hours of the former, and listened to about another two hours in the audiobook.
Time posting: zero
Snacks: some mandarin oranges, some soft rolls. I cracked a tooth while grinding my teeth in my sleep on Christmas eve, and it has become very painful again.
Thoughts: I wish I could just curl up under the comforter with the cats and sleep for a few weeks.
Non-book activities: Nothing. Doesn't augur well for a good start to the year!!

Books read from: 3, The Forgotten Kingdom by Signe Pike, and The Midnight Library by Matt Haig, first nonfiction book of 2021 will be Paper Bullets by Jeffrey Jackson, about two LGBTQ women on Jersey during WW2, who waged a kind of subversive propaganda using artistic skills picked up in Paris in the 1920s and 1930s, alongside the likes of André Breton and Picasso. Intriguing and an unknown-to-me story.

Saturday, early afternoon.
Books:
read some of pull of the stars in bed late last night; about a hospital maternity nurse in Dublin during the 1918 flu epidemic.
Lunch:
BLT/sliced egg sandwich. Ate our last cookies last night...
Oh no! We're out of cookies!! : /
Thoughts:
mild day today and rain has stopped. Sun is trying to poke though the haze. Must go for a walk. Only an hour left of my audio book, beast player, that I have been listening to forever.
One of my travel goals is to see all the National Parks. For Christmas my husband said we could visit one this year. I'm thinking Grand Canyon! As soon as I get my covid vaccine...
Other activity: cooking, baking, sending postcrossing cards. Along with reading, postcrossing.com is my other main hobby these days.
Finished 127 books in 2020; more than my usual 100, due to staying in to avoid covid.

42nd social distancing readathon? I've obviously not being paying enough attention as I missed the last 41 and it feels a bit late for this one. I have read a few pages today but not really enough to claim to be participating.

I received a text message from a good friend who wanted to let me know he was in ICU due to a heart attack. He's doing better, but the fact he is still in ICU concerns me. Still he was doing well enough to text me himself. I could tell he didn't want to be online long, and he said he'd text me again when he could.
I'm afraid the news made me lose concentration. I decided to work on a project where I'm checking my to be read pile against the libraries I use most to see if there are changes in availability and to eliminate a few things I know will never get read.
I've also been catching up on threads. I do hope to read a little more in at least one book before bedtime, but I'll report it with my first post in the morning.

Books finished: 2 - both were recorded books I listened to while driving. Thick as Thieves by Megan Whalen Turner and Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets by J. K. Rowling
Time reading: 18 hours of driving time spent listening to two books. Plus about 1 hour or reading time in the hotel room and when I got back to Tuscaloosa.

weekend windup -
Books:
finished the pull of the stars, Emma Donoghue. Hist fiction about the 1918 flu. Rather scary given the current situation...
started the wanderers by Chuck Wendig.
food over the weekend:
I fixed an 'old world supper' in the crockpot - sauerkraut, sausage, potatoes, and apples. Last night my husband made garlic chicken with vegetables and rice. We both like to cook!
Other activity:
sent postcards, watched the tv mini series 'Hollywood'
thoughts:
Dreaming of road trips! Hoping to visit my sister in DC this month.
New Year's resolution - resume daily walks. Slacked off over the holidays..
I'm still enjoying these weekend marathons.
Still staying in to be safe in anticipation of vaccine soon, I hope.
