Found: Old French Novel

I read a book 20 years ago and can’t remember the name. It was an old book when I read it. I’d guess written in the 50s? I believe it was a French novel written by someone using a one word pseudonym. It was a great story about a newly discovered species of half ape/half humans. Corporations started using them as slave labor and there was debate as to whether they were to be considered humans. So one guy decided to press the issue. He had a child with one and then killed the child and called the police on himself. There was a trial which had to determine whether the child was human or not. Fascinating book, but I can’t remember the title. Can anyone help? Thank you!
