This talk thread makes me wonder if there is an easy way to communicate with the other language groups on LT. I can see there is a dormant group Hands Across the Sea Book Club, but that seems to be English language only, as does the BookCrossing group.

Is there a way for a group to appear in the other site languages?

Nice idea.

When you start a group you can say what language(s) you want used in that group. But each message is in the language it is written in. If you want the messages to be in other languages, you would have to translate them.

BTW, that is how all the language sites happen. Members translate them.

>4 Nicole_VanK: I know they are just different (translated) interfaces. I am suggesting a set of groups or forums which transcend the language interfaces. As it stands, it would be difficult for me, as a non-Portuguese speaker, to identify a suitable group where I could contact message someone who is. (I do know that many non-native English speakers do in fact use the English area as well as their own, so maybe resurrecting the dormant group many be a way forward. And yes, I realise that it sounds rather rude to post a message in English on a Portuguese group, which is one of the reasons I am asking about a supra-language interface group.)

But if you really want to reach people from a specific language group, you will be most likely to reach them in Book Talk, with a suitable subject heading.

Why would someone who is already having trouble with English want to read a group that besides English also has other languages that s/he doesn't read? The ones who are comfortable in English are already using the English groups. There are several dormant groups in Portuguese, but no active ones. There is an "active" group for German. Last post was in April. French all seem to be dormant.

Groups don't have languages or if they do it's by custom of the group members. So what's the site improvement that you're advocating? Do you want Tim to add an option to groups to specify a mandatory language? How would the system enforce that?

I noticed that someone has started a Portuguese-Brazil version of the Name that Book group: https://www.librarything.com/ngroups/23502/Qual-o-nome-do-livro-Portugu%C3%AAs-B...

>6 MarthaJeanne: Thanks, Martha - I was not aware that groups are not language specific. Will give Book Talk a try.
