Found: Stegosaurus in Colorado

My quest is finding a book I read in the mid 70's Fiction, set in Colorado canyon country, a Kid is exploring and discovers a live stegosaurus and keeps it a secret from everyone for as long as he can. I would like to share this fabulous story with my son to get him interested in reading as it sparked my lifelong interest in reading. Has anyone read it and remember the title?
