The 2022 Alphabet Challenge - With A Twist

I cannot. and will not take any credit for the idea of this. A very good friend on a couple of my other groups, "tealadytoo", (also known as Ellen), is entirely responsible for this. I thought that some of you might like to play along... and it lasts the entire year, so you can take your time. There are choices of levels of participation that you may choose from. If you finish before the year is out, you may choose a different level or redo the same level if you'd like. Whatever you choose...just have fun. If everyone likes it, I'll put it up again in 2023.

1. The Die-Hard Reader: For each letter of the alphabet, read a book whose title starts with that letter, and read a book whose author's last name begins with that letter. (You will need two lists of letters, one for titles and one for authors.

2 The Semi-Diehard Reader:- for each letter of the alphabet read a book whose title OR whose author's first OR last name begins with that letter. (You will only need 1 list of alphabet letters)

3. The Picker and Dabbler: - pick a list of letters meaningful to you. You can add another list of letters if you finish one before the 31st of December 2022. It could be the initials of your kids or grandkids, or the letters in your name, or the letters in the title of your favorite book, or the letters in your pet's name... a holiday or an event...whatever means something to you! Then read a book with a title and/or author (first OR last name), that starts with each letter on your personal list. However long or short you choose to make it!

If you have questions, please feel free to ask.

If I didn't already have so many challenges! I suppose I could try this IF I have extra time in a month...? :-)

I do a different alphabet challenge, though, and in the way of encouragement, I find this is a good way to get some books off the tbr that sometimes don't come to the forefront, otherwise. At least it works that way for me .

>3 LibraryCin: I know we both do Heather's challenge On Dusty's site. Ellen came up with this variation with a choice of how much the participant wanted to do with different levels and I thought it might be an easy thing for this group since they have an entire year to finish. I have a lot of challenges also and sometimes forget to check them:)

>4 Carol420: Good point! This can be anything throughout the year... Much of it will just fit in, anyway. I'll set it up... Thanks for the push! :-)

ETA: Technically, I could do option #2 without any effort, as it pretty much mimics what I do for the other alphabet challenge (though that one chooses two letters/month with X and Z being ok for all year). But I'm going to try for option #1 and see how I do.

Let me tell you... X is the hardest one for me. I don't think I've done X at all the past couple of years!

I just finished reading Titanic: Destination Disaster by John Eaton. This was a very interesting, in depth account of the early beginnings of the ship, the voyage before the iceberg, after the disaster, and the two inquiries, by both the American, and British marine boards. I found it both fascinating, and full of interesting information that I never knew before.

I just this minute finished reading A Million Dreams by Dani Atkins. To say I loved it, would be an understatement. It was so beautifully written, and it just felt so real in the way the characters were written, the emotions, and everything that happened. I laughed with them, and tears came to my eyes in two scenes in the book. This happens very rarely with me, and that is one of the reasons why I gave it 5 stars.

I finished reading William Stuart Long's ninth book, in the Australians series, called The Empire Builders, and I totally enjoyed it. Just as the others enthralled me, this book did not leave me disappointed. Instead of being set in Australia the entire time, it covered the colonization of New Zealand (where I live), and I enjoyed learning more about my country's history. All the old characters from the eighth book were in it, plus some new ones, and it was so exciting, informative, and written so well. I would definitely recommend it to lovers of historical fiction, especially fans of naval battles, and nation's wars.

I have just finished reading 'Where The Light Enters' (Waverley Place #2) by Sara Donati, and in this second book, Sophie Savard loses her husband to consumption, and returns to Waverley Place after his death.
Once more both cousins, become embroiled in the affairs of one or more of their patient's lives.
Sara Donati has the ability to create such wonderful characters in her books, and I really enjoy immersing myself, in their respective worlds.

I finished "The Greatcoat' by Helen Dunmore yesterday, and it is the story of Izzy, who lives with her doctor husband, in a flat near an old World War 2 aerodrome. After discovering an old airforce greatcoat, in a large cupboard in the flat, and using it as a blanket, when she becomes cold at night, she starts hearing taps on the window late at night, and discovers that she is being visited by the ghost of an airforce officer, who is living between 2 time periods, and doesn't realize he is dead. I found it a nice read, and eventually a small romance ensues, when Izzy finds herself developing feelings, for the dead officer.

>43 Sergeirocks: Back when I was younger and broke, I also eschewed TV except for Sunday night's "Star Trek: The Next Generation" episode followed by "Murder, She Wrote." And I had a phenomenal reading stack that I devoured.

I will say, though, that I've cut way, way back on my TV watching these days so that I can get back to reading. And working from home has helped immensely, too.

Thanks for being a leader in the return-to-books-from-TV, Meerkat!

I just counted, and I've got 17 out of 26. I keep finding the same initials in the authors that I'm reading! How very interesting that letters are so often repeated in names.

Maybe it's time to make a list of the letters I haven't read and look through my shelves for books for those particular authors.

>49 threadnsong: I’ve stalled on the letter ‘Y’, threadnsong, the only book I had on my shelves was a travelogue by an author named Young. Being a travelogue there’s no plot to keep me reeled in, so it’s taking me a long time to get through it…
After that, I just need an ‘I’ to finish the author’s list. I’m definitely getting back to a Mystery & Suspense book for that, 😉.

Good Luck on finding your last 9 authors, threadnsong.

>49 threadnsong: >50 Sergeirocks: I’ve only got Y to go for the author, and J, X and Z for the title.

If anyone needs a title for any letter Diana Xarissa has a series with a title for each letter, Markham Sisters Cozy Mystery and if part of Kindle Unlimited it looks like you can download these free, at least in UK. May be worth checking for US.

This is what I have left:
Titles: XYZ
Authors: ELQUXY

I would have thought the E and L would have been easier, especially the L, but for some reason, I've made it this far into the year with neither as an author.

🎉 TA-DA!
Finished the travelogue at last (only took me 6 months, 2 weeks and 5 days - almost as long as it took the author to get from Piraeus to Canton, travelling only by sea… ☺️).
With the closing of the final page, I’ve finished the challenge - a full house!

Thanks for setting this ‘challenging’ challenge, Carol, 👏.

Brilliant, well done Sergei. 🥳🥳🥳🙌👏👏👏

Just checked mine and still need three 🫣🥶 An X and J book and a Y author. I’m off to Mr Google.

That’s some Travelogue - perhaps you should have read it as a diary. 🤓
