Seven Engravings by Thomas and John Bewick in a portfolio taken from Gregory Way's translation of Le Grand's Fabliaux - 1970

Between 1952 and 1972 the Folio Society released seven limited edition portfolios of blocked impressions of engravings taken from current books. I own two of these portfolios. Four of these portfolios featured engravings by the Bewick brothers.

The portfolios were :-
* - Two Tales of the Congo Engravings portfolio by Dolf Rieser (1952, 9 engravings, 75 sets) (Reviewed here.)
* - Original Cruikshank copper plates etchings portfolio (1958, 75 sets)
* - Portfolio of Wood Engravings by Frank Martin for Stendahl’s Scarlet and Black (1965, 13 engravings, 75 copies) (Reviewed here.)
* - Five Animal Engravings by Thomas Bewick in a portfolio (the sparrow, the hawk, the serpent, the rat, the ibex). (1968, 50 sets)
* - Five Animal Engravings by Thomas Bewick in a portfolio (the swan, the bittern, the lobster, the shepherd's dog, the leopard). (1968, 50 sets)
* - Seven Engravings by Thomas and John Bewick in a portfolio from Gregory Way's Le Grand's Fabliaux.(1970, 50 sets) (This review).
* - Ten engravings in a portfolio, four by Thomas Bewick, three by John Bewick and three by Charlton Nesbit. (1972, 75 sets)

The portfolio featured below has seven delightful engravings by Thomas and John Bewick.
The engravings by Thomas Bewick are titled :-
* - The Priest
* - The Cannonesses and the Grey Nuns
* - The Knight and the Sword
* - The Lay of Sir Lanval
* - The Lay of Sir Guéllan
The engravings by John Bewick are :-
* - The Lay of the Little Bird
* - Aucassin and Nicolette

There is a four page introductory leaflet by Iain Bain printed on grey paper enclosed within the portfolio, which is quarter bound in mid-blue cloth with blue toned marbled paper boards closed with a tie ribbon. There is a limitation plate on the inside cover, mine is number 16 of 50 copies. It measures 28.6x25.5cm.

Each etching is housed in a large cardboard frame that can be opened to remove the etching if desired.

For a moment I thought you were posting on the fine press forum. Thanks again, I never heard of the portfolios and this looks lovely. Looking forward to check the other portfolio reviews you noted.

>1 wcarter: Magnifique! Alas, not a single one has been reproduced in A History of British Birds (Vols. 1 and 2) reviewed here: https://www.librarything.com/topic/339121
