Series in Translation

For Series in Translation we're reading books that were written in a different language from the one we're reading in. We're flexible on the number of books in a series - any number greater than one.

I'm planning on reading two: The Chinaman by Friedrich Glauser, which is the third book in the Sergeant Studer series. These are classic Swiss crime novels from the 1930s; The Novel of Ferrara by Giorgio Bassani, which is a reissue of Bassani's Ferrara series in one volume.

I hope to finally start the Mirror Visitor quartet by Christelle Dabos, originally published in French. The first book is A Winter's Promise.

I might read The Darkness by Ragnar Jonasson, which fits AlphaKIT as well.

I started The Snowman by Jo Nesbo last year for the Alpha Kit and never got it finished. So, I think this will be a good book to read for this.

I'm thinking about Kamusari Tales Told At Night by Shion Miura, translated from Japanese into English by Juliet Winters Carpenter

I've been meaning to read Angel's Game for ages, and get back into that series by Carlos Ruiz Zafon, so that's what I'll be doing in February.

I'm reading Detective Inspector Huss by Helene Tursten.

Edited: OOPS - I'm reading that now. It will be done before February. I'll find something else.

This is a harder one for me. The book I had planned to read for this month would fit in Feb, too, and I haven't gotten to it yet. I'm going to switch this month for something else and in February read:

Ruby Red / Kerstin Gier

I am going to read Black Seconds by Norwegian author, Karin Fossum. It is translated into English by Charlotte Barslund.

Not sure what I'm reading yet - probably something from the Pushkin Vertigo series as I have several of those in the stacks.

I will probably read one of the Maigret novels, since I recently acquired many of them on eBay.

I will get to another of the mysteries by Seishi Yokomizo featuring the sleuth Kosuke Kindaichi.
Translated by Louise Heal Kawai from the Japanese.

I read Maigret and the Old People by Georges Simenon.

I read Boris Akunin's Murder on the Leviathan for the GeoCAT, but it can fit here too because it's translated from Russian.

I read The Scarred Woman by Jussi Adler Olsen translated from Danish by William Frost.

Denmark's welfare system is admirable, but this is one example where it is not working as intended. Some young women resent the social worker they must deal with in an attempt to get continued handouts and push her to retaliation. Rose's mental health problem has escalated to dire straits. Her story is tangled in with another case but Carl and Assad manage to sort out all the overlapping details. There is not as much humour in this one, while some perceptive lines from Assad make Carl wonder just where he came from. Another Department Q winner.

I read The Absent One by Jussi Adler-Olsen

I found it to be darker and more graphic than the other two books I have read from the series, but the plot was interesting.

I read Dunkel (The Darkness/Dimma) by Ragnar Jónasson. It was translated to German from the English version, not from the Icelandic original, so it is kind of a double translation.

>18 MissBrangwen: Small languages get tricky sometimes. As I said in my review of Winterkill : "Apparently the explosion of Icelandic books being translated led to scarcity of translators so Orenda Books decided to get this one translated via the French translation. Either that or it was just much cheaper to do so."

So... same applies for yours. At least the English translation of that one WAS from Icelandic ;)

I read Black Seconds by Karin Fossum, which was another excellent installment in the Inspector Sejer series.

The Memory of Babel was first written in French and is the third book in Christelle Dabos' story about Ophelia and Thorn.

I finished The Absent One by Jussi Adler-Olsen (translated from Danish by K. E. Semmel), and like >17 bookworm3091:, I too found it rather violent and disturbing. I do like the characters very much, though, so I plan to read more from this series.

Inkheart by Cornelia Funke
Published at least concurrently in German by a German author, for me, this book was a hit. I like the story and the characters. I was also much longer than any book I've read recently marked "Jurvinial". There were multiple places where I think it could have been broken up into 3-4 pieces with little lost.

COMPLETED The Honjin Murders by Seishi Yokomizo, translated by Louise Heal Kawai. Apparently there are more than 70 in the series, only four of which have been translated into English and not in order, either.

>29 Robertgreaves: I read that one last month. I also found it odd (And sad) that only four of the books have been translated into English and not in series order.

Ruby Red / Kerstin Gier
4 stars

Gwyneth and Charlotte are cousins, born only 1 day apart. Based on their genes and Charlotte’s date of birth, Charlotte is expected, and has been training all her life, to be the family’s next time traveller. So, it’s a surprise when Gwyneth is suddenly transported to another time!

I really liked this. Although I didn’t initially like Gwyneth’s time travel partner, Gideon, he grew on me. It did bother me some, though, that no one seemed to think they needed to now train Gwyneth on those things Charlotte had been learning. I realize that it would not be nearly as much training, since the time travel is now already happening with Gwyneth, but it sure would have been some help, I would think!. The book also didn’t quite end. I believe it is a trilogy (it is definitely continued), so although I often leave a gap between books in a series, I’d like to try to get to the next one before too much time passes.
