Integration with Open Library?

Hi, I notice when I add a book, I can often see what libraries it's available in, in a list on the Quicklinks section of the right sidebar.

I wonder if Open Library could be integrated into your list of connected libraries, and added to that sidebar? For example, I added this book: https://www.librarything.com/work/10588510/248267330 and can see it has physical copies in several libraries.

And, I can see it in Open Library as a book you can borrow instantly: https://openlibrary.org/books/OL4258550M/Aids_to_make_you_able

It would just be so useful, and would save me the step of manually adding Open Library links to my book entries! It would also mean that anyone looking at the entry in my list would be able to click on over to Open Library and potentially borrow the book for instant (temporary) viewing.

What do you all think? Has it been considered recently as a possibility?

To use Open Library as an import data source, it would have to be available in a specific data protocol format.

However, Open Library is part of the Internet Archive. These are books they have purchased and scanned to make available. They are not a representation of books specifically owned by other libraries though the odds that they are in libraries is high.

OverCat is a good data source for adding books using data from libraries. The data there was added by other members.

But it sounds as if you want the links to access an electronic copy.

The Internet Archive was recently found liable for copyright infringement for parts of the Open Library project. Even if they have changed their approach, I would be hesitant to integrate it into this site. (Additionally, it seems like many parts of it would be direct competition for LT, so why would they add that)

I use a Chrome extension called "Library Extension", which adds a sidebar to LibraryThing (and other sites like Amazon and Barnes & Noble) which tells me whether or not the book is available at my selected public libraries. https://www.libraryextension.com/
I would suggest using that instead, as it has no competition with LT and no copyright infringement concerns.

>1 openassistivetech: Open Library is available as a quick link; you just have to click the pencil icon in the quick links box and add it to your list.

I would have to look into the API, but I'm not inclined unless a solid case can be made for it. My sense is that it doesn't have much not found elsewhere, and their data is not as good or full as other sources.

As some know, I have a history with them. I helped plan it, and LibraryThing gave it a lot of data. But it went a direction I think it shouldn't have. So I'm wary. But if it would be useful, I'd consider it.

Does this have something to do with this topic?

I suspect that you have different cookies stored on the laptop and you aren't in all collections.
