500 Internal Server Error when trying to upload covers/images

Trying to replace a couple of Amazon covers with higher rez versions and I keep getting the above error.

Are you trying to upload a cover from an image URL or as a direct upload? If the image URL, can you give me the link?

I just tested cover uploads on my end and was able to choose a member-uploaded cover, grab one from the web, and upload direct, on a few different books. We'll need to do some more digging.

I am also not able to upload images from the web site or from the mobile app.

From the Web, I get "500 Internal Server Error nginx/1.21.6"

From the mobile app, I get "Upload Failed Failed to upload the cover".

Yeah, that's a whole separate bug that I noticed earlier this year and didn't care enough about to write up since it doesn't impact the results of the coverstats::amazonasin search. I'll add a Kindle book up on Amazon for preorder using the ASIN, weeks or months ahead of publication and get the Amazon cover yet when viewing covers at the work level, it never recognizes that I am using an Amazon cover, e.g.

I added the book above in question 5 months ago and it's had an Amazon cover since day one but as you (didn't) see, has no Amazon covers listed. Separate issue and much lower priority though.

I am trying to upload a cover image from my PC, chrome browser and got the 500 error. I had originally tried to upload it from the android app and it failed. Then I tried the PC but I remembered seeing this bug report.

Re: Amazon covers, those are always subject to change but something for us to look at another day, probably.

Okay, I did some testing and it seems to be failing on images as small as 1.1MB, which we should be handling. @ccatalfo is going to dig on this.

Hi, I'm getting the same 500 error with a cover image of 2.5 mb. I'm trying to upload it through spanish site of LibraryThing (https://www.librarything.es) and using Edge.

I got the same bug today, but here are some extra details: I got the bug when trying to upload a file saved on my computer, but when I used the "grab one on the web" for a high-res file I was met with limited success. Oddly enough, on a second iteration of the same book (DRM and non-DRM), the listing did not sense the cover was available to choose from.

FWIW, I'm getting the same error using (the most updated) Firefox on a PC. Image size that I am trying to upload is 593 KB.

Okay, I think we (or rather @ccatalfo) fixed this? As of about 2:14pm ET, if people can check and report back to confirm. Needed to clear some disk space.

Hey everyone- I'm experiencing this problem today, 9/9/2023 at 8:35am EST. I had no issues yesterday uploading a bunch of covers, but today I'm getting the 500 Internal Server Error. Below that message, it says "nginx/1.21.6."

I'm also seeing this today.

The problem does seem to be related to image size. I had a batch of covers to upload; I was uploading directly from my laptop (Windows / Firefox). The smaller ones all worked - the largest that succeeded was 122KB (800x1218 pixels). The larger ones all failed - the smallest that failed was 168KB (800x1212 pixels).

I'm getting the 500 error when I try to upload a venue photo (from my local machine, 1.17 MB file size).

And it's a weekend so may not get fixed before Monday EST

500 Internal Service error for me too. Images are NOT large--the same size as I've always tried to load, but they're not loading today. Librarything seems to be having quite a few problems lately.

So, for me, this is NOT fixed.

The issue I was experiencing yesterday (500 Internal Server Error) in reference to uploading cover images -did- seem to be resolved by that afternoon (est). Today, though, the issue is back. ANY image I attempt to upload gets me that server error.

Size does not seem to be an issue. It's any image. The smallest image I tried uploading was 335 KB and the largest was 2.7 MB.

We've encountered this as well, which is frustrating because we're just sorting a big collection this weekend :(

It doesn't matter what size it is--all image sizes lead to the 500 internal service error.

I sent Tim my picture.

Possibly related to this: I'm seeing broken images on member-uploaded covers when I go to change covers. If I click on the information box, I get a flash of the cover before it reverts to the broken image.

If the book is in a series, the cover there are fine, it's only in the book record.

Amazon covers seem OK.

Just weighing in to say that I am having the same 500 server error, but it seems to be random and intermittent. Out of a dozen jpg covers I've uploaded, only two give me this error. All others uploaded without incident. All of them are the same file size, file type and uploaded in the same manner from my PC.

Incidentally, I have never been able to upload a photographed cover using the phone app. The photo upload always fails, which is what I save to my phone photos, email to myself, save to my PC then upload through the online website using Firefox.

Today: 2 fails, many successes.

I'm getting this error as well, while trying to upload a jpg cover image from my desktop computer using Chrome.

I was having trouble yesterday along the lines described by >37 Maddz:. But that seems to have cleared up this morning also.

Okay, we think—and, judging by others' posts here—we've fixed this, now, but please reopen if anyone is still having trouble uploading images. Thanks for your patience, all.
