Friday startup
Books read from: Last House Before the Mountain by Monika Helfer. Edge of Day by Laurie Lee. I am still listening to Summer Before the War by Helen Simonson.

Books finished: Good Girls Revolt: How the Women of Newsweek Sued Their Bosses and Changed the Workplace by Lynn Povich.

Book Thoughts: I didn't get much reading done today. I can't believe that I am still listening to Summer Before the War. It is incredibly boring and the only reason why I am still listening to it is because I was trapped in my car with it for the 1,200 mile trip back to Alabama. I had listened to all of the books I brought with me and this was the only one left. It was a disappointment. I finished Good Girls Revolt and thought it was a very good follow-up to my previous book about the women journalists of NPR. The Newsweek case was brought up in the NPR book and I decided I should know about this case. It was the first such compliant about discrimination against women in the workplace and ended up being a class action lawsuit against the Newsweek parent company, the Washington Post. It read really fast because it was written by the first woman editor at Newsweek. She was one of the original plaintives and after the lawsuit was the first to benefit from the new anti-discrimination policies put into place.

Non-Book activities: Got back to T-town last night and forgot my house key. I had to go to my friends and get the extra key I have on deposit with them.

Time reading: 1 hour. This morning when I woke up I read in bed for an hour.
Time posting:
Food: sandwiches. I am looking forward to having supper out with friends tonight.

Fri evening

I have settled in to read tonight after a busy day tidying, packing, getting ready to leave town Sat morning. We’re driving to FL for a week. All l want to do is walk on the beach, read books, and eat fish!

Then Down Here We Come Up for book club. My friend’s daughter wrote this book.

Dinner: out at neighborhood Mexican place. Mex food pretty much all the same but this little place is a treasure.
I had sopa de camarones and a large margarita.

Cold and raining, and here l was looking for spring to begin on Mar 1.

Saturday morning reading
Books read from: Last House Before the Mountain by Monika Helfer. Edge of Day by Laurie Lee. I am still listening to Summer Before the War by Helen Simonson.

Books finished: Last House Before the Mountain by Monika Helfer. Good Girls Revolt: How the Women of Newsweek Sued Their Bosses and Changed the Workplace by Lynn Povich.

Book Thoughts: I finished the short German novella Last House Before the Mountain. This is the first book in a trilogy that takes one family from WWI to the aftermath of WWII. The author of this book wrote it in an unusual literary style. It has one main narrator but it also has other members of the family as narrators as well, so it sort of flashes from one to another and that makes it harder to read than I expected. Still it is interesting and brings up many points about generational trauma and PTSD.

Non-Book activities: Went out to supper with friends and I will be cooking today. I am making wontons for a group of us who are getting together tonight for a meal.

Time reading: 1 hour.

Books finished: Suites inoubliables by Akira Mizubayashi; The Fire Gospel by Michel Faber
Time reading: 5 hours
Time posting: 6:30 pm
Snacks: pop corn
Thoughts: I loved the Faber book. Theo, the main character, is so relatable I laughed out loud! The ending is also thought-provoking, showing how complex we are as humans: capable of great harm and great kindness
Non-book activities: a very icy hike, but I was glad to get fresh air.

Saturday Evening:

Books finished: Falling in Love by Donna Leon (audio), Follow the River by James Alexander Thom

Time reading: 7 hours

Thoughts: Follow the River tells the story of Mary Draper Ingles who was kidnapped by Shaness Indians in 1755 from her home in the New River Valley of Virginia. Thom told a good story of sheer grit and survival. It had a bit of sensationalism, reminiscent of what the news stories might have been like, including hints of attempted cannibalism. I read it in a day, something I haven't done in a long time, some skimming of the more gruesome parts.

Non-book activities: a bit of gardening, mostly perennial bed cleanup

Sunday update
Books read from: Edge of Day or Cider With Rosie by Laurie Lee. Sing Them Home by Stephanie Kallos. I am still listening to Summer Before the War by Helen Simonson.

Books finished: Last House Before the Mountain by Monika Helfer. Good Girls Revolt: How the Women of Newsweek Sued Their Bosses and Changed the Workplace by Lynn Povich.

Book Thoughts: I started two new books today. So Far Cider With Rosie has really captured me and I will be spending most of my reading time on that book. It was published in the UK with the title Cider With Rosie and in the US as Edge of Day. It took me some research to suss that out. I hate it when publishers do that. Why can't they just leave titles alone? The book is the first in the autobiography of the English poet Laurie Lee and I find it very captivating.

Non-Book activities: I had a very good meal last night with friends and made homemade fried wontons. I did great on the first batch. The second batch got a little greasy because my oil was not hot enough, but the third batch was good. The star of the meal, however, was the Pearl Balls. They were wonderful.

Snacks: maple syrup on snow - "tire" in French and a cupcake for my birthday last week

Thoughts: I won't have time to finish What Storm, What Thunder by Myriam Chancy for book club on Tuesday but I'm enjoying the read: an account of various characters on the 2010 Haiti earthquake. It's a tough subject (and there are a lot of characters) but it's beautifully written and gives a great sense of what happened. I love the mix of English, Creole and French.

I finished one more book on Monday, count it if I can since I started it on Sunday:

Our Only May Amelia by Jennifer L. Holm

This is an extremely engaging tale told in first-person by the youngest in a family of all boys. May Amelia lives in the Pacific Northwest of 1899, a rural community of farmers, loggers, and fishers. She's a bit of an impulsive and independent spirit of a girl who gets into issues, a lot. I can see why this would have been given a Newbery Honor award in 2000, it's good enough for the main Newbery Medal in my estimation. There's an author's note at the end that took me by surprise, a pleasant one, and endeared the character to me all the more. Definitely recommended.
