I’m back for another readathon.
I’ll be finishing Vampires of El Norte and beginning Demon Copperhead.
Still have work to do in the yard but I’ll make a special effort to read more than I work.

Friday start up
Books read from: Book of Form and Emptiness by Ruth Ozeki. Zane Grey's Riders of the Purple Sage: The Real Story Behind the Wild West's Greatest Tale by Stephen J. May. Beige Man by Helen Tursten. I am listening to the Love Songs of Miss Queenie Hennessy by Rachel Joyce.
Books finished: Book of Form and Emptiness by Ruth Ozeki
Book Thoughts: I started Book of Form and Emptiness on April 5th and I just finished it. Of course, my copy is a Big Boy at 548 pages, but this book was slow going at the beginning. I ended up liking it, but I think that the book is overly ambitious in that it tries to tackle to many different subjects and blend them all together into the one story. I think I understand what the author was trying to do, but I don't think it worked as well as it should have. It is about teenaged angst, grief, childhood trauma, mental illness, drug use, reading, books, and the social ills of the working class life in the U. S. It is also about Zen Buddhism and consumer culture. Just this list is exhausting to compile so the book gets to be one of those weighty tomes that has some great points to make but gets lost in the weeds getting there.
Non-Book activities: I started packing for the trip back to Alabama. I am taking the Party Wagon because my car is in the shop getting the broken window repaired. It will take a week to get the new window here and I don't want to wait that long, so I am taking the Party Wagon and will bring back a load of stuff at the end of June when I return. The window in my Subaru was hit by a rock about a mile east of the airport in St. Louis, MO when I made my trip back to Kansas. With the holiday intervening, and all of my duties as co-chair for my 50th High School Class Reunion I put off doing anything about it until Tuesday of this week. It took two days for the insurance paperwork to get done and to the Glass shop so it will be about June 10 before the car is ready to drive. Since I have my mothers old van available I decided to just take it back and do more packing and work in Alabama rather than wait on the car and stay here for another week. It is always something.

Saturday report
Books read from: Zane Grey's Riders of the Purple Sage: The Real Story Behind the Wild West's Greatest Tale by Stephen J. May. Beige Man by Helen Tursten. I finished listening to the Love Songs of Miss Queenie Hennessy and started listening to Music Shop by the same author, Rachel Joyce.
Books finished: Book of Form and Emptiness by Ruth Ozeki. Love Songs of Miss Queenie Hennessy by Rachel Joyce
Book Thoughts: I am on the road so that means that I will have lots of listening time. I finished listening to Love Songs of Miss Queenie Hennessy and enjoyed it. In the afterward the author says that it was not meant to be a sequel but it turned out that way. As sequels go it was very well done. It is the same story as Pilgrimage of Harold Fry but told from the point-of-view of a different character, Queenie Hennessy, who is the integral piece in Harold Fry's story. It is very interesting and the narrator was excellent. I have now started another book by the same author, Rachel Joyce and so far am enjoying it.
Non-Book activities: I am in Arkansas tonight and very close to my destination. I am going to take a spa day at Hot Springs National Park. However, as usual, I forgot something important. I forgot my bathing suit, so I may have to limit my visit to the massage rooms and not go into the thermal baths. I will see when I get there what I can do without a swimsuit. I have a room for tomorrow night at a Resort hotel - Arlington Resort Hotel and I am looking forward to spending a day at that historic hotel. Tonight I am in a cheap Super 8 motel but it is good enough for the one night.

Saturday update:
Books read from: 4 Vampires of El Norte, Demon Copperhead, My Name is Barbra and Murdle
Books finished: 1 Vampires of El Norte
Time reading: 4 hours
Time posting: Sunday 9 am
Snacks: Key lime wafers and green tea
Thoughts: After waiting a month for my hold of My Name is Barbra to renew, it was delivered to the Libby reading app yesterday. Thankfully, it knew just where I had left off, Chapter 13. This book is so popular and long awaited for that I hope to finish it in the next 21 days.
Non-book activities: Oh my goodness, planted the hostas I split on Friday, put additional tarp on the much hated pachysandras and mowed the front lawn. Thankfully, it's raining today and after church and garden center, a day of reading.

10.30am Tuesday
My long weekend is over and I did much less reading than I thought I would
Books read from: The Scarecrows by Robert Westall, Children of the New Forest by Captain F. Marryat, The Iliad by Homer, At the Edge of the Abyss by David Koker
Books finished: 1 The Scarecrows
Time reading: 6hrs
Snacks: Dinner: chickpea coconut curry
Thoughts: Returning the Koker as a DNF, too many footnotes for my current patience
Non-book activities: Lots of family research and uploading photos to findagrave from my trip last year. Working in kitchen with son - cleaning up as he goes, finding the spices etc for him. Watched an episode or two of my current k-drama
Total books finished: 2 The Refugee Summer by Edward Fenton, The Scarecrows by Robert Westall
Total read from: 5
Total time reading: 8hrs approx
The Scarecrows was really great but creepy - deserving winner of the Carnegie Medal (UK).
On Saturday we went to the city and visited a food market, spotted a Greek place and went away to have a coffee before it opened. When we went back and ordered around midday they said we were their first customers ever as they just opened their business that day. The food was great so we'll come back another time. My son used to frequent a Filipino place there, it shut down during the lockdowns as did several others, so it was our first time back there since 2019.
Finding Children of the New Forest a great read.

Monday wrapup
Books read from: Zane Grey's Riders of the Purple Sage: The Real Story Behind the Wild West's Greatest Tale by Stephen J. May. Beige Man by Helen Tursten. I started listening to Music Shop by Rachel Joyce.
Books finished: Book of Form and Emptiness by Ruth Ozeki. Love Song of Miss Queenie Hennessy by Rachel Joyce. Zane Grey's Riders of the Purple Sage: The Real Story Behind the Wild West's Greatest Tale by Stephen J. May
Book Thoughts: I finished reading Zane Grey's Riders of the Purple Sage. This nonfiction work was for the LT Nonfiction challenge. The May topic was the Wild Wild West. I had run across this book in the bibliography of another book I read earlier this year and wanted to read it. It was very entertaining and I really got started on it a couple of days ago. This one read fast but it wasn't that long. Not only was it a fast read, it was short. I learned a great deal about Grey but I also learned a whole bunch about the publishing industry in the early 1900's. It rained here in Hot Springs today and so I spent the day in the hotel spa soaking in a mineral water hot tub and reading. There is nothing like reading while sitting in a faded but elegant 1920's Resort Hotel lobby. Tomorrow will be lots of listening time as I drive.
Non-Book activities: I am at Hot Springs National Park for the second night and will be leaving in the morning. I plan to stop to visit Bill Clinton's Boyhood home in Hope, AR. From there I will drive down to Shreveport, LA and hit Interstate 20. At that point it will be a straight shot to my house in Alabama.
Time reading today: 5 hours
Time reading this weekend: 21 hours
Time listening: 10 hours
Time posting:
Food: a steak sandwich and a Woodchuck Hard Cider at the Superior Bathhouse Brewpub on Bathhouse Row in Hot Springs, AL.
Total books finished since the Read-A-Thon Began: 427
Total Time Reading since the Social Distancing read-a-thon began: 1238 hours since I started doing the weekend Read-A-Thon in April of 2020.
