Friday Start-up
Books read from: Out of Egypt: A Memoir by Andre Aciman. Winter Soldier by Daniel Mason. For the Good of All, Do Not Destroy the Birds: Essays by Jennifer Moxley. Wandering Life: A Memoir by Donna Leon. I am listening to Column of Fire by Ken Follett.
Books finished:
Book Thoughts: I have lots of books going right now, but am within 100 pages of getting Out of Egypt done, and it continues to be fun to read. I am also reading the rather different book of essays For the Good of All, by Jennifer Moxley. This is one of those books I find myself having to really think, think, think, about as I read. I like, it but it is very different. It is a book that combines poetry, literary history, literary interpretation, and modern life in each short essay. Very different than what I thought it would be.
Non-Book Activities: I am still working on the insurance thing, but did make progress on the moving project. I got the old dresser and chest completely cleaned off and ready for my cousins to pick up. I hope to get my clothes moved into the new dresser this afternoon. I am also making zucchini and yellow summer squash pickles today.

Books finished:
Book Thoughts: I read more in Out of Egypt today and listened to about 1/2 hour of Column of Fire while driving to town for groceries. Other than that not much progress on books today.
Non-Book Activities: I had to make refried beans for tomorrow's block party and then my sister and I went to a local farm's appreciation pork supper. I had fun doing that and got to see lots of people I haven't seen in ages and met a couple of new ones. It was fun. This is considered to be the end of summer and tomorrow will be the last Sunday Block party. School starts next week so summer is over. I listened to more the Olympics today and took in the men's and women's wrestling finals, table tennis, and women's handball finals. I also talked on the phone to friends in Alabama and will have to talk to more of them tomorrow.

Books finished: Out of Egypt: A Memoir by Andre Aciman
Book Thoughts: I had great fun and enjoyment reading Out of Egypt. It was a memoir from Aciman's young adult years and concerned school boy things, but it also told a great deal about Jewish life in Alexandria, Egypt. Alexandria in the Inter-War years and up until the 1960's was a very cosmopolitan place and this memoir reflects that. Aciman's family was Sephardic Jews who moved to Constantinople and remained there until forced to leave their home in Constantinople in 1919. They choose to make Alexandria their new home and were caught up in WWII. The Suez Crisis of 1956 plays a major part in the family story and is the first major event that Aciman remembers and understands as important to the future fortunes of his family. The book ends with the entire family immigrating, once again, this time to France. The families native language was Ladino and this lead me down the rabbit hole of what this language is and what its status is today. Bluntly, it is a dying language with few native speakers left.
Non-Book Activities: I had to take the van into the repair shop today to have the wheel bearing replaced. That was a $250.00 bill but the vehicle does drive much better. I am probably lucky that "the party wagon" made it to Montana and back to Kansas. Tomorrow I will pack it with the stuff I am taking back to Alabama to the Thrift Shop and the good furniture that I am giving to Turning Point. I didn't have much time for reading this weekend and I am disappointed in that, but I have been busy. The weather was perfect this weekend. It is starting to warm up now, but it was so nice and cool with low humidity this weekend.
