Upload Failed, Failed to upload the cover.

Starting a few days ago, I have been unable to upload covers from within the app. This no longer works for any books. I've tried clearing the cache, force restarting the app, and nothing works. Any ideas?

>1 Jacob64:

There is useful information the developers need:
* Which app? iOS or Android? (Or are you using the web site and saying "app"?)
* What device are you using (e.g. Pixel 6, iPhone 15)
* What version of the operating system are you using?

Also, have you tried uploading using the web interface?

Without this, the developers can't isolate the problem.

It might help to list the books to which you tried to upload covers, too.

Any other details you can supply would also help, e.g. file sizes of the covers.

Its using the Android app. I've tried it on my Samsung Flip 4 (Android 14) and Lenovo Tab M11 (Android 14). I can still upload images using the web interface. It doesn't work to upload for any books at all. This only started about a week ago. File sizes are between 4 - 5MB

Does it have anything to do with the app no longer being available in Google Play and is no longer updating?

>7 Jacob64:

It may be related to the fact that the app is old, but it is not exactly true that the app is no longer updating. See this thread: Android App Not Available for Latest Version of Android, https://www.librarything.com/topic/349351#n8687024

There was a report by LT about issues with the images servers this week (which they were trying to resolve) - which is probably at least part of the reason for the issues you are seeing.

>4 Jacob64: Thanks for raising this! What happens when you try? When you say it fails or doesn't work, what are you seeing exactly? This will help us know if it's the same or a different issue. Thanks for your patience!

I'm experiencing the same problem with the Android app on both a Moto G Stylus 5G phone running Android 12 and a Samsung Galaxy Tab S7 tablet running Android 13.

The exact error message is:
"Upload Failed
Failed to upload the cover.
Cancel Retry"

Choosing Retry gives the same error message repeatedly.

FWIW, the book is The Way of a Trout with a Fly by GEM Skues.

As far as I can tell, I last successfully uploaded a book cover in October, and may not have tried it since then.

>10 ZephCraven: I get the same message rh mentioned. After trimming the photo and hitting ok... a white box pops up that says

Upload Failed
Failed to upload the cover

Cancel Retry

This message pops up after retrying as well. The cover pictures are between 4 - 5MB so not over the limit. Using the app and scanning the barcode still adds the picture, but many of my books are older, have no barcode, and often no ISBN.

Aha! Thank you for this extra information. We are working to push an update to the Android version of the app ASAP. I have a feeling this will address the issue, but if it doesn't we will continue to investigate.

Update: we have been working on this but don't have a fix QUITE ready to roll out. Maybe in the next 24 hours? Working on it.

Sorry to close this one out as a duplicate of https://www.librarything.com/topic/365409, given this one has more staff posts, but I want to follow the "get rid of the new and keep the old" trend for duplicate reports. I'll cross post to https://www.librarything.com/topic/365409 so we can keep track of the status.

(Edited to fix my links, whoops.)

I cannot upload cover images I scan using Canon Pixma MG3660 scanner with VueScan or take photo with Samsung Galaxy A15. I tried resizing and saving other formats like JPG or PNG in GIMP and still it failed. The post of image fails.

Book I was trying to scan the cover of: Beachmere then and now.

I had to use a low res image from a library to get an image otherwise I would have no image.

There was no strange EXIF data to screw up the image e.g. rotation.

Backend may be failing. Please check logs.

I have to remove any dead cover images that had not uploaded properly or there would be a blank image for book.

Please update your server software to handle JPG, PNG, GIF of all varieties not just old primitive format.

I tried upload of cover image in Firefox and Chrome and both had no image uploaded (corrupted). I tried PNG and JPG.

>18 hdwalker:
I was able to upload JPGs earlier this week with no problem, many from pictures taken by my iPhone and only edited to crop.

I think your problem today may be part of a set of larger troubles over the past couple days, with the "image" parts of the troubles still not solved. See

>18 hdwalker: Sorry for the trouble. As >19 LeslieWx: notes, I also believe your issues are tied to our server troubles over the weekend. Please see https://www.librarything.com/topic/369957#8814405 for updates!
