Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen 2013

Jane Austen was born in Hampshire on 16 December 1775 to a rural rector. Pride and Prejudice, written in 1797, was her first novel but was not published until 1813 after being rejected by several publishers. The second novel she wrote, Sense and Sensibility, was actually published before Pride and Prejudice. Her novels were published anonymously in her lifetime. She wrote six novels and numerous shorter works, but initially they were not highly regarded. Jane died in Winchester on 18 July 1817 aged just 41, probably from Addison’s disease, a rare disorder where the adrenal glands don't produce enough cortisol and aldosterone. She never married.

The works of Jane Austen have been published many times by the Folio Society. The editions are:-

>1 wcarter:, Jane Austen was 41 when she died and it’s Joan, not John, for the illustrator of the Jane Austen books from 1957-1996. Autocorrect is a pain, isn’t it?

I’m not fond of the illustrations for the 2013-2017 set. I definitely think Joan Hassall is better. Her woodcuts just seem to fit so well. I wish the FS would do a book of all of her illustrations for them. I’ve not seen the three novels from 2006-2007. The covers do look nice and I’m given over to wondering why the FS didn’t do all 6 novels in that edition.

I’ve got the 1996 3 vol set but much prefer the Balbusso illustrations.

I'm not 100% sure but I feel fairly certain that the FS Jane Austen's Letters made an appearance in the recent film Jane Austen Wrecked My Life!

Great index! Wonder why Folio stopped including the Lady Susan/Short Works volume in their collections. Looks like it's been almost 30 years since they last published it.

>6 HonorWulf:, 1996 was the most recent publication for the set, including the Shorter Works, correct?

>7 Bibliophile-I: Yes, appears so. It was excluded from the recent Gold editions as well
as the upcoming Limited Edition.

>8 HonorWulf:, that’s something I find a bit odd, to be honest. Anybody and everybody publishes an edition of the six novels. The Shorter Works are, I think, what made the Folio Society Jane Austen stand out, along with the illustrations by Joan Hassall. If the FS ever decided to publish a collection of all of Jane Austen’s shorter works, I think that it would be a success. I just got the Everyman’s Library edition of JA’s other shorter works, which, includes everything. The book is 29 years old and in fantastic condition. In this instance, the FS should be taking notes!
