---------------------------------------------------------------

Your challenge for October, 2025, is to

**************************
Read a "Northwest Book"
**************************

Rules:
1. You can read any book that is on the very top of any book pile in your house.
2. You can read any book that is the farthest left on any bookshelf in your home.
3. Don't go rearranging your bookshelf now! If someone else rearranges your books without you telling them to, they just might make some other books available! :D
4. You can read any book that has the word "north" or "west" in the book title, the subtitle or the author's name.
5. You can share a read.
6. That's it. Nothing else! :D

---------------------------------------------------------------------

Other Stuff (not part of the TIOLI challenge):
1. @FAMeulstee's 2025 TIOLI Sweeplette Meter
2. @FAMeulstee's Our TIOLI Sweeps
3. Morphidae's List of Previous TIOLI Challenges (2010-2016) - A reference (Do a control-F scan) to avoid repeating a previous challenge. If your idea is similar to a previous challenge, make it unique by adding a new "twist" to it. (Exception: Any challenge previously entered by FAMeulstee)
4. The October 2025 TIOLI Meter - Optional page on which you may track your TIOLI reading. Not competitive--- just fun!

Challenge #2: The “Is it Abstract or Concrete?” Challenge: Read a book with a 2 word only title in which both words can be used nouns

The words in the title do not have to be used as nouns in it, they just need to be words that can be nouns in another context.

Challenge #3: Read the second book in a series

As with most of my challenges, this is a very self serving challenge. In September, I discovered so many wonderful first in a series books that I now want to read the second book in the series. Most notably, I'd say, was The Marlow Murder Club, which I absolutely loved, so now I want to read the second one. Pretty quickly, too, since I've now recorded all six episodes in season 2 on PBS Mystery and I want to get cracking on those. #2 in a lovely Icelandic Romance series is also calling my name.

Note that you don't need to have read the first book in a series in order to count a second in the series for this challenge.

>5 lindapanzo: So the ones we read in September we can read the sequel in October! Great idea, Linda.

>6 PaulCranswick: Absolutely.

Challenge #4 - Read a book using a word that is a US State Nickname

Reasonably straightforward but should be based on the list as provided and compiled by Britannica.com

https://www.britannica.com/place/list-of-nicknames-of-US-States-2130544

Some minor rules:

1. The word "state" on its own is not permissible
2. Conjunctions such as "of", "and" and "the" do not count.
3. Descriptive words such as "blue", "big" etc do not count unless put together with the state nickname being described - e.g. Big Sky qualifies; "big" alone does not.
4. Imbedded words allowed

9scdoster
Sep 25, 2025, 11:34 pm

>8 PaulCranswick: To make sure that I am understanding correctly, the title of the book does not need to include the entire nickname? So for instance, Golden State does not need to be in the title, just the word Golden?

10DeltaQueen50
Edited: Sep 26, 2025, 11:22 am

It's time for pumpkins, witches and ghosts!

Challenge #5: Read a book whose title implies a scary or disturbing read

As everyone has different things that scare them, the book doesn't have to be a horror book, but the title should make you feel that you are going to be walking the dark side.

11PaulCranswick
Sep 26, 2025, 3:09 am

>9 scdoster: Yes that is correct dear lady. Golden would suffice.

12Helenliz
Edited: Sep 27, 2025, 6:00 am

Challenge #6: Read a book where the title words are in alphabetical order

I've got A Grain of Wheat to read this month, where the title words beginning with A, G O & W, which are in alphabetical order.
The title does need to include a minimum of 2 words.
You do need to use all words, even the pesky little ones.
You may ignore a subtitle.
You cannot ignore preceding articles.

So Black dogs is fine. If the title were "The Black Dogs" or "Black and Dogs" that would not be fine as that would fail lines 3 & 2 respectively.

If you are reading a book in a foreign language, the title words can be in alphabetical order in that language. P;ease say that in the wiki so I don't think you don't know your alphabet!

I will be interested to see how long a title we can find that fits. 2 words title should be easy enough

Challenge 7 - Read a book in or translated from a language that is not one of the 15 most spoken languages in the world:

- English
- Chinese*
- Hindi
- Spanish
- Arabic*
- French
- Bengali
- Russian
- Portuguese
- Urdu
- Indonesian
- German
- Japanese
- Nigerian Pidgin
- Marathi

*There are several variants of both Arabic and Chinese but it might be hard to find out what variant of Arabic the book was originally written in, and arguably all written Chinese is Mandarin, so I'm going to amalgamate these.

Also, I'm sure there are other lists of the most spoken languages but please use this one.

ETA: this was originally just "translated from" as I was thinking of my own language abilities, but then it occurred to me there are several Club Readers who read in multiple languages

Challenge #8: Read a book with title words that equate with the word “ troublesome” (as in difficult)

18Chatterbox
Sep 26, 2025, 10:16 am

CHALLENGE #9: Read a book by an author whose surname also is used as a first name

Completely self-serving, as I have the new mystery novel by Elizabeth George on my Kindle, and want to re-read another mystery by Michael Gilbert. Those are pretty obvious examples, but if you're picking something a little less clear, pls throw a line into the wiki with an example or supporting data. For instance, I may read a book by Tim Mason, and after a quick search I discover that Mason is actually #42 or something on the list of popular boy's names. Or if I wanted to read Bog Queen by Anna North, well, Kanye West named his daughter "North"...

In the case of people with double barreled surnames (eg Constance Beresford-Howe), use the second of those names (Howe).

Challenge #10: Read a book with something Halloween costume-related on cover/in title

#

Read a book where a person could duplicate the costume (not every day clothes^) of a person/creature on the cover.

^ "Everyday clothes" from certain jobs are acceptable if they are stereotypical of the profession like chef, medical personnel, police, sports player, astronaut, fire fighter, judge, etc.

OR

...could create a costume of a person/creature from a description in the title - one noun is fine.

Examples (in no particular order):

The Knight and the Moth by Rachel Gillig (knight/title)
Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas (Celaena Sardothien/cover)
Remarkably Bright Creatures by Shelby Van Pelt (octopus/cover)
The Housemaid by Freida McFadden (housemaid/title)
All Systems Red by Martha Wells (Murderbot/cover)
Dracula by Bram Stoker (Dracula/vampire/cover & title)
Persuasion by Jane Austen (Recency-era gentleman/cover)
The Book Thief by Markus Zusak (thief/title)
Anne of Green Gables by L. M. Montgomery (Anne/title)
The Serviceberry by Robin Wall (cedar waxwing or bird/cover)
The Martian by Andy Weir (astronaut/cover)
The Handmaid's Tail by Margaret Atwood (handmaid/cover & title)
Clown Town by Mick Herron (clown/title)
Demon Copperhead by Barbara Kingsolver (demon or copperhead/cover)
Animal Farm by George Orwell (pig/cover)

Rambling about why I didn't do "items" as well:
I was going to do "items" too if an example of a costume could be found. But, dang. I found costumes of everything I could think of from a fork to an eraser! Couches, whoopie cushions, fire hydrants and alarms, sneakers and crocs, charcuterie boards and PB&Js, heck, every food, condiment, household item, or flower you can think of plus more. So, yeah, just people or creatures. 😆

Challenge #11: Read a book that has some connection with a book you've read in the last 3 months, state how it's related
I think we've done this before, but I always like books that lead to other books.
So the three months covered are September, August, and July. Books can be related in any way - same author, same series, same or similar characters, same theme, even the same cover.
I just read a biography of Octavia Butler, Positive Obsession so I plan to reread many books by her.

Challenge #13: Read a book a book with a word in the title starting with the letters in SEATTLE MARINERS

Another rolling sports challenge this month, this time in honor of my hometown Seattle Mariners gaining their first AL West division title since 2001 and getting the chance to play October baseball!

Usual rolling challenge rules apply: "A," "An," and "The" don't count for the A and T slots, don't start a new set until there are only two slots left in the previous set, and no more than two open sets at one time.

Challenge #16: Read a book from PEN America's School Ban List (2024-25)

Book challenges and banning have been going up over the last few years in the U.S., and libraries are celebrating the freedom to read with Banned Books Week from October 5 - 11.

To give readers an (unfortunately) long list of options, you can read any title from PEN America's Title Index of books that have been banned in school districts in the 2024-25 school year.

And just a general fyi for folks who may not be familiar with the lingo -
Banned means taken off shelves
Banned by restriction is making it restricted - moving where it is shelved to be less accessible and requiring parental permission to check out
Banned pending investigation is taking it off shelves while it's under review - and the reason that's considered a ban is because library's collection development policies and best practices should continue to have a book on the shelf while it's being reviewed to determine if it really needs to go (or, yes, get moved as certainly no library would advocate shelving, say, adult titles in a section with picture books)

So many piles of books, so many bookshelves (14 bookshelves, with actual shelves totaling anywhere from 4 to 6 per construction), so many choices....

Technically boxes and cupboards weren't mentioned so weren't included!

82SqueakyChu
Edited: Oct 4, 2025, 10:01 pm

>81 PaulCranswick: Paul, boxes would work because inside a box, there might be a book pile in which there is a book on top. Left side in a box, of course, would not count because a box can be moved 360 degrees.

Cupboards would work if the books were lined up because there would be a "left-most" book. That is like a bookshelf to me. If the books inside were piled up, there would be a "top-most" book.

Oops! Did I accidentallly add too many other optional books to be read for my challenge?! LOL!

TIOLI Stats for September 20205

In September, 2025, we read a total of 317 books, of which 70 (or 22%) were shared reads. We collected 38 TIOLI points for a total September YTD total of 279 TIOLI points.

The most popular book, read by 8 challengers (Nice!), was The Marlow Murder Club by Robert Thorogood.

The most popular challenge (with 37 books read) was the one by @lindapanzo to read the first book in a series.

The challenge with the most TIOLI points (ten!) was also the one by @lindapanzo to read the first book in a series.

Good stats for September. Ever onward, fellow challengers!

TIOLI Awards for September, 2025

The X Marks the Spot Award goes to @paulcranswick and @raidergirl3 for reading Misinterpretation by Ledia Xhoga. For my (@SqueakyChu's) challenge to read a book by an author whose last name starts with X, Y or Z, this was the only book with an author's surname starting with X!

The Togetherness Award I goes to @humouress for the challenge to read a book discussed in any September on the BBC Worldservice Bookclub. This challenge was fully 90% shared reads! How cool is that?!

The Togetherness II Award goes to @lindapanzo for the challenge to read the first book in a series. This challenge listed a total of 19 (!) shared reads. All in one challenge! Amazing!

The Double Dare Award goes to @PawsforThought for reading Maigret och den dödsdömde and @antqueen for reading The Dark Deeps for the challenge by DeltaQueen to read a book where at least one title word begins with the letter “D”. Both of these challengers chose books with more than one title word starting with "D".

The Earworm Award goes to @countrylife for the challenge to read a book which brings a song to mind. I think this is the first time I actually sang songs while working on the wiki! LOL!

Congrats to our award winners! Feel free to add any additional awards at this time

I wanted to read this first book before I saw the first season of the Marlow Murder Club on PBS. I've recorded both the first and second seasons and have a few more to watch on the first book from the first season. I've also read the second book, Death Comes to Marlow which I read for my read the second book in a series challenge this month.

TIOLI Question of the Month:

Which book have you chosen for one of this month's TIOLI challenges that you are most excited about reading? Which book is it? Why the excitement about this particular book?

115raidergirl3
Oct 15, 2025, 1:12 pm

For those who read The Girl Who Drew Butterflies, thank you for bringing my awareness to it. What a great book - history, art, science, all in one! Wonderful. I had the ebook, but I imagine the physical book would be gorgeous as it is filled with the art images.
I had previously read Finding Wonder by Jeannine Atkins which is also delightful. It covers three young scientist girls who were far ahead of their time, including Maria Merian. All three (Mary Anning, Marie Mitchell, Maria Merian) were supported and encouraged by their fathers, and the art side is also present here as the book is written in verse.

>114 SqueakyChu: Night Boat to Tangier by Kevin Barry is a paper library book I requested after a discussion on my thread about ferries. I had read Two Ferries Out last month which prompted a few stories about ferries. I live on an island which now has a bridge, but ferries were the only option for the first thirty years of my life. Someone recommended Night Boat to Tangier as their favorite ferry book, so I couldn't resist. I am enjoying it, and was delighted to discover it was written by an Irish author. I am partial to Irish writing.

I tend to pick my next read depending on my mood, which is why I book horn them into TIOLI challenges at the end of the month. Even if I have something lined up I may change my mind unless (or because) expiring library books which can’t be renewed force a choice.

>114 SqueakyChu: I wasn't planning on reading Every Brilliant Thing. I went to see it today and my mind was blown. It was extraordinary. I cried I laughed and found myself doing both at almost the same time. It's a single person play where the lead character starts a list of brilliant things, aged 7, after their mother attempts suicide for the first time. Which makes it sound really hard going, but it wasn't. Nothing I can say will do it justice. It's on in London at the moment, with 5 different people playing, I saw Minnie Driver in the role, which worked really well as we're of a similar vintage. 5 Crispy Pancakes (if you know, you know - and I did!)
I read it on the way home. There are notes in the script on the different customisations for place & person playing it that are really interesting.
Can't work out where to put it right now, but that's an entirely different question!

Finished my 100th book of the year last night. Haven't managed triple digits since 2019 so I'm pretty excited. (The book, Lullaby Town by Robert Crais, was a solid rogue PI story, 6/10. (Jays fan since 1985, the year I moved to Toronto and they almost squeaked by the A's to get into the series; I had to wait several more years for them to pull it off, and have been waiting since 1993 for a repeat. And yes, I DO know that the Mariners have waited their entire franchise history and I would have been rooting for them against any other team in the world but my Jays.)

Not a fan of superstar-led teams (I don't put Guerrero in that category, conveniently), so I am not a big Dodgers fan. I think/hope they are beatable. Would really have preferred a Brewers matchup, as that team, like the Jays, has been in the midst of a comeback.

If you're a praying sort, please keep my mother, Dorothy, in your prayers. As you may remember, she has been suffering from severe anemia for quite some time and has been rushed to the hospital twice in the past four months. She goes for frequent iron or blood infusions but feels very weak.

Last Friday, she had what was seemingly an all day blood infusion, though the hematologist had her come in to discuss next steps, including a bone marrow biopsy.

Anyway, after this long, long day, we got home. She got out of my car quickly and promptly fell on the cement garage floor. I called 911 and our village's rescue squad (aka the lift service) came to the rescue and got her up on her feet and into the house. She said she felt ok (she landed on her rear end).

Alas, she was not. The pain got worse every day to the point where she could no longer walk and the short trip from her Lazy Boy to the bathroom and back took her 20 minutes, using her rollator.

She thought she had a groin injury. Her primary care doc urged me to call 911 and have her transported to the hospital this morning. She said that she was worried something was seriously wrong.

Turns out she was right. Mom broke the two ring-like bones that connect the pelvis to the femur. Thankfully, no surgery is needed but Mom will have strong pain meds, some physical therapy and lots of rest.

Hopefully, she will be back to normal in a couple of months.

>150 lindapanzo: Ooof, am so sorry, Linda. We all get so much more fragile as we age, and it's worse, I think, to see those we love go through all of this.

I'm hanging on by my fingernails awaiting a surgical consult in two weeks re spinal and hip severe arthritis. Hoping to avoid surgery, needless to say, but am worried that the less mobile I am, the more problems with balance will arise. Blech blech blech.

But the Jays WON! My fave Jays include Yesavage (because what's NOT to like about a 22 year old who goes from single A to pitching in the World Series in the same year, and besides -- that name!!), Mad Max (don't get between him and a pitcher's mound), Nathan Lukes, and the indefatigible Alejandro Kirk, who proves that short stumpy people can do great things.

They really are worthy successors to Cito Gaston's squad of the early 90s.

I am loving all the Blue Jay love! We will have some late nights here on the East Coast (atlantic time) when they play in LA, but my husband and i will stay up. We saw them play a few years ago, and got a Vladdy bobblehead at the game. At that game Teoscar Hernandez hit a HR to win the game; I still have a soft spot for Teoscar.
Everytime I start to think about who my favs are, I can't stop. Vladdy, George, Gausman, and Ernie Clemente start the list, but I can't argue with @chatterbox's list either.
OK. Blue Jays. Let's. Play. Ball.

No clue what all this Blue Jay talk is about but I see they’re Canucks from Toronto, where I have family, so yay Blue Jays!

I can talk football though; I was up late/ early watching my team, Liverpool FC, in the Champions League and they beat Frankfurt 5-1.

>165 raidergirl3: Well, Vladdy, because of course. and Ernie. And I love how George just shrugs off the booing he got in Seattle and some of the ugly behavior from opposing teams.

>166 humouress: I'm a Chelsea fan, but from early childhood and can't claim to follow them actively now! Yes, the Jays are Canada's ONLY major league baseball team (since the Montreal Expos disappeared...) I can claim to have seen them in their old quarters, a stadium by the lake that they shared with the Toronto Argonauts, before the Skydome, whoops, Rogers Centre, was built. I even watched a game once from a room at the hotel that was built into the stadium.

Minnesota has a connection to the Jays; Louis Varland, who was born in St. Paul and played high school and college baseball in the state. He was originally drafted by the Minnesota Twins before being traded to the Blue Jays.

I fed all the dates that Madeline has posted the new monthly TIOLI challenge into Gemini AI, made it work really hard to tell me what day of the week each of those were on, and this is what I learned.

Sunday, 29
Monday, 27
Tuesday, 26
Wednesday, 15
Thursday, 32
Friday, 21
Saturday, 36

We’re both so happy she’s home.

@PaulCranswick. Msg 8. I am going to use Cowboy for Wyoming. I see on your list its Equality but I also know that it has been called the cowboy state and its car license used to have a bucking bronco. https://travelwyoming.com/things-to-do/western-culture/cowboy- "Wyoming is known as the Cowboy State."

Never mind, Paul, I forgot that I am using it as my ugly cover.

I'm reading Play Nice by Rachel Harrison which is about a haunted house. The haunted house challenge seems perfect for October, but it wasn't this month or last October. Does anyone remember when it was? I can put it in the last name as first name challenge, but don't you hate when you read a book that would have been perfect for a previous challenge?

Been a bit busy myself (that time of year, you know 🧙🏼‍♀️). I'll do them now:

Darn - I thought that this time I'd be able to do Madeline's challenge but then I forgot to get a book from the northwest corner.

Challenge 5. Read a book whose title implies a scary or disturbing read - The Invasion of the Body Snatchers by Jack Finney (1955)

Challenge 8. Read a book with a title word that is equal to or could be a substitution for the word “ troublesome” - Secrets at St Bride's aka Dastardly Deeds at St Bride's by Debbie Young (2019/ 2022)
Challenge 9. Read a book whose author's surname is also used as a first name - Off Armageddon Reef by David Weber (2007)
shared read: Challenge 11. Read a book that has some connection with a book you've read in the last 3 months - Olive and the Dragon by Victoria Goddard (2025)

Challenge 13. Read a book a book with a word in the title starting with the letters in SEATTLE MARINERS - Morvelving by C.J. Switzer (2025)
Challenge 14. Read a book with a cover featuring the backs of people - Wobble to Death by Peter Lovesey (1970)
Challenge 15. Read a book with a red cover, one with blood on it or both - Dreadful by Caitlin Rozakis (2024)
Challenge 17. Read the 8th or 10th book in a series in honour of October - Impossible Odds by Dave Duncan

I've got one more book to fit in (Off Armageddon Reef) and working through the banned books list to see if it will fit into Challenge 16.

Wow; I wonder if they still have books to read in Florida.

ETA: found somewhere for my last book - all done.

Hello! I participated somewhat this month, just getting my feet wet. However, my question is: if one book fits two challenges, does it count for both or just for one challenge?

And my 2nd question is (for the future) can you read more than one book per challenge, or is it better to try to read a book for as many challenges as you can?

3rd Q-are forms of the word applicable? For example--can constitutional be substituted from constitution?

188humouress
Edited: Nov 2, 2025, 1:53 am

>187 Tess_W: The TIOLI rules are here: https://wiki.librarything.com/index.php/TIOLI_FAQS

The specific answers to your question are:

1- No, you can only count a book for one challenge;

2- You can read more than one book for a challenge - Take It Or Leave It, it's up to you. Some people like to read at least one book for every challenge and Sweep the lot; these days we can also do Sweeplets (all the challenges on one page eg challenges 1 - 6) and Mini-sweeps (three challenges on a page) for which we receive wonderful prizes (bragging rights). So then you might like to spread your reading over as many challenges as you can. Or not - it's up to you.
ETA: there are points for shared reads so (even if your book doesn't fit) we try to put the same book in the same challenge as everyone else (eg Hang On, St Christopher in Challenge 17.) If you really want to put your book in a different challenge you can post and ask if the other reader(s) is willing to move their book;

3- Different word forms: that will vary from challenge to challenge. Please post on the (relevant) TIOLI main thread and ask the challenger for clarification. If you read through this thread you'll see that people have done that.
