+HOW TO follow friends

(A work in progress!)

Below is the answer I gave a GR friend just now who wanted to know how to follow friends like in GR. I'll be coming back to this to better organize it within a week or so. Meantime, it's here to read and here so I don't forget to review it for clarity. --DC

Unlike GR, there is no single feed to see pretty much everything that someone is up to, like reading, reviewing, or commenting, and the groups they belong to. LT is different than what we are used to, but it can be done!

In every profile, you can see what groups someone belongs to, and the contacts they've made. You can also see their latest book adds and if they've reviewed or rated it.

In the group I set up, there is the thread, HOW TO keep up with friends' Talk which will tell you how you can see any member's activity in groups where they have been messaging.

And to see a feed on what books of special contacts you'd like to follow--adding, reading, and their actual reviews--go to HOME at top. Then below that you should see 2nd navigation bar, from there select CONNECTIONS. That will give you a feed of those whom you have connected (see below*). It will give you their books added, ratings, and reviews, or you can select to filter which of those items you want only to see, e.g. just reviews. Also note on the left side, you can select which type of "connection" you want to see (e.g. just Friends).

*How to make someone a "connection"? Go to their profile, on the right select either Add interesting (library), or Add Friend (they have to approve), or use the drop down Connect and add the person as a connection.

Lastly, you could set up a group of your very own, make membership based on approval if you like, then DM friends to ask them to join in order to keep in touch.

I just discovered this very minute that when looking at CONNECTIONS, you can also filter by a single member by clicking on their name on the right of the CONNECTIONS page. That's helpful! It can be confusing to see everyone jumbled together (sorted by date/time), even if they are all part of your same connection grouping. This way, if you like, you could go through one by one, take your time, making sure someone's most recent activity isn't seven pages away. If you click on their name, their most recent activity will be right there at the top.

I would also note that 'add interesting library' is still going to send a message to the other person letting them know that you've 'followed' their library! I know that matters to some people.

>3 GraceCollection: Good point and thank you. When I finalize this (sometime this week, I hope), I will be sure to add that info.

>4 norabelle414: I'm so glad! After a few months here, I've begun to try to remember to click on everything I see, instead of my assuming I know what the click will do. This was one of those that was very pleasantly surprising.

Can any of this be done in the app? It seems to have limited function…

>7 booksfallopen: I'm sorry I don't know. My eyes are too old to use apps on my phone. Lots of people here do use the app. You could post a question about its functionality over on Welcome to LibraryThing! group. https://www.librarything.com/ngroups/8033/Welcome-to-LibraryThing%21

By the way, welcome to Library Thing! It took me a while to get comfy, but I love it here now.

The app is very limited. You’re far better off using the website for just about anything.
