1TheDogInQuestion
Hi. First time in a forum. I'm not the most social person, but I'll see how this plays out. Is there anything else I need to say? Some stuff about me? I don't want "sharing" to become "rambling," so I'll wait until someone asks.

Hello and welcome!

What's really possible on this site? What are the features?

>1 TheDogInQuestion: You seem to have mastered the cataloging part already. You can explore groups to match up your interests and then customize the talk feed so you donβt have to wade through every topic.

Is there anything else I need to say? Some stuff about me?
Only if you want to. I think I took the route of introducing myself by asking my first can't-figure-out-what-Talk-thing-this-belongs-in questions. Lately I've branched out into occasionally using this for I-know-I've-been-here-several-months-but-I-can't-find/remember-how-to questions. π€£
And trying to be welcoming & helpful to newcomers, of course!

I guess I could say I like classic books? I had this edgy gothic lit phase in my freshman year of high school. Frankenstein, Jekyll and Hyde, Crime and Punishment, Dorian Gray. It was Dracula that got me out of it. My favorite book is The Three Musketeers. I really like character-focused books. Makes me feel like I have actual friends :P

If someone is still on here can they explain things about site?
9Marissa_Doyle
>8 Kimshii_Ch: LibraryThing is a book cataloguing site: https://www.librarything.com/about

>8 Kimshii_Ch:
Sure. This is a site for cataloguing your books, and, if you like, to interact with other members through the Talk function.
You might like to Take the Tour: https://www.librarything.com/tour/ and you can ask questions about the site in the Frequently Asked Questions group: https://www.librarything.com/ngroups/625/Frequently-Asked-Questions and the Talk About LibraryThing group: https://www.librarything.com/ngroups/902/Talk-about-LibraryThing

>12 MsMixte: Ah I see. The link is a post where someone is talking about this site is not meant for chatting about proxy and gameing sites. Most of the group Anime and manga addticts have people talking about light speed and game codes, proxy's?? But I don't do that STUFF here. :>
14Kimshii_Ch
>12 MsMixte: But can you read on here?
15Marissa_Doyle
>14 Kimshii_Ch: No, there are no books to download here; it's for cataloguing books, not reading them.
16MsMixte
>14 Kimshii_Ch: Sadly, no, we don't actually have books to read here. We are just people who like to record our own books because we tend to have so many, and just love to read.
Recording them helps us not buy the same books three years later because we've forgotten that we already own the book.
(thank you for not engaging in asking for proxies, cheats, etc.!)

>17 Kimshii_Ch: no wonder the middle schoolers come here!
Twenty years ago people PAID to be members of this site. Those of us who have been around a long time take our libraries very seriously, or we wouldn't have paid the big bucks to join (LOL).

Hi Sammy!
I'm 11 months old on here π and I absolutely love the way you introduced yourself.
IMO, the best thing to do is to grab a book you have at home and try entering it. That will force you to learn about the "welcome to LT" type stuff, and the wiki, and a few of the different talk groups. (This was my experience, anyway, except I grabbed 4 very different books and tried to get them in bing-bing-bing-bing.) You will possibly have problems or be curious about things, and that can inspire you to start a new thread in Talk to get answers, or find an existing one to add to. In the process, other members will learn about you, and you'll learn about them.
The second best thing to do is to remember that members are from all over the world; live all over the world; range in age from 13 (>13 Kimshii_Ch:?) to ... 90-something?; have been here for 20 years longer than you or for maybe 20 minutes less than you; have been using computers since the 1970's or only use their phones. Oh, and not one of them can read your mind. If you remember this, you'll read what you wrote before you hit "Post message", and think about whether people will read it & get what you mean or if they'll be confused or ticked-off, and think about whether it needs some re-writing before you hit that "Post message" for sure.
Like me ... I just realized that the button actually says "Post message" not "Send", so I fixed it. Then I realized that a sentence near the top didn't make as much sense as it should, unless you're living in my head (which nobody is).

>21 LeslieWx: UHhhh why did you put my user there :
23jjwilson61
>22 Kimshii_Ch: She didn't. She put in the greater than sign followed by 13, which is the LT Talk method of referring to a previous post in a thread and post 13 just happened to be by you.
24LeslieWx
ARGGGHHHHHHhhhh!! π€¦ββοΈ Thanks for explaining so quickly, @jjwilson61.
@Kimshii_Ch, my apologies! Unless you object, I'm going to leave it there as an example of exactly what ">" followed immediately by a number leads to, so anyone reading the thread can see what NOT to do. Also an example that maybe reading through a post 2 times is not enough π
(I *knew* that's what it did ... but I use mathematical notation all the time for shortcuts, and my head was thinking mathematical notation not LT Talk's syntax.)

So is their a group I should join for me?
I just feel lost a bit.

27MsMixte
>26 SammyGotell: You don't have to 'join' most groups, only the ones which state that you need to join to post.
You are welcome to post as long as you are interested in a group, and either want to ask questions or engage in further conversation with fellow book lovers.

>27 MsMixte: But if their is someone named "INEEDLINKSALRIGHT" Who is trying to find links on here is that allowed? It seems to me it's not because they are straight up saying they need links and not really puting the meaning of this app/browser.
29MsMixte
>28 SammyGotell: Yes, well, there's been quite the discussion about that. Those of us who have been here a while and who are serious about our books are not, for the most part, pleased with that development, and that's all I will say.
30SammyGotell
>29 MsMixte: But should they get banned for that abuse of LT? I mean they don't have any interest in books.

>31 David5739: Welcome! You can find out more here: https://www.librarything.com/quickstart.php or here: https://www.librarything.com/tour/. This group and the Frequently Asked Questions group, https://www.librarything.com/ngroups/625/Frequently-Asked-Questions, are good places to ask for help as you explore the site.

>34 Charon07: Not a single obol charged for wandering the marshy underworld of LT, but cataloging of books is encouraged as a sort of donation for the ride.
