This comes out of a desire to add a connection of audio drama adaptations of individual books to those books. Right now the only way to do this is for a series, but with books not part of a series, there is no way to do it. There is a place for movies in Common Knowledge, but I’ve always found that a bit strange because if you click the title of a movie it takes you to the Change Log and NOT the work here on LT, so I’d like a way to make that happen. If we add a field similar to this for audio in Common Knowledge, the link should go to the work here on LT, as should the movie itself, not just to IMDB or to Audible. I don’t care about the way I can buy or watch it, I care about the work, just like a book. Links and info as to how to obtain the title can be put there. I’d be irritated if links to books went to Amazon. See what I mean?
But I digress. Primarily, I’d like a way to associate an adaptation to an individual work without combining it with that work. For example Anne of Green Gables - I recently listened to an audio drama, but it’s in a silo. I love radio drama and think it would be really helpful for me and others to have any and all listed on the work page so we could know that one exists. I don’t mean combining as they shouldn’t be, but as another associated work that is based on the original. Make sense?
This would also be useful for stuff that builds on a specific world like Sherlock Holmes or Cthulhu. Things that aren’t ‘canon’ or straight up audio narrations, etc. As the world of books and adaptations expands, especially in audio, encapsulating as much as we can related to a specific work or series of works is really necessary, at least IMO.
To expand, I’d also like it to work in a similar way to Series in the sense that I can add to a Series without having to catalog it first. As I see lots of things come up in Audible that I don’t have any interest in cataloging, I could add them to a work as an adaptation if I notice the connection, but I don’t want to have to catalog them first since they have nothing to do with me.
Phew! Let me know if anything needs further explanation or if I need to split this into 2 RSIs.

So this is an audio adaption of an existing book?
Wouldn't this be a work to work relationship?

>2 gilroy: Yes, although my example of Chocky was wrong and I changed it.
It could be a work to work, honestly never thought of that because it isn't obvious to me. Let me do some noodling.
Ok, so I just went to an Agatha Christie title that has a bunch of adaptations. I don't see work to work listed anywhere on my page, so I'd love a way to first connect something and then to have it show up in the sidebar on the work page. Adaptations as a bucket that could house all of them that have been directly adapted from that work.
Maybe I need to turn on or somehow or other make work to work appear on my page...so many options and things I might have turned off.

That's exactly what you can do with a Work to Work relationship. I've set it up for https://www.librarything.com/work/36067492/t/The-Maltese-Falcon-%5B2008-Audio-Dr...
As I see lots of things come up in Audible that I don’t have any interest in cataloging, I could add them to a work as an adaptation
Lots of Audible audio books are readings of the unabridged text, and should be remain combined with the main work. Only something like your full cast Maltese Falcon is an adaptation.

>3 Bookmarque: Right, I don't mean straight up readings, I mean plays and movies etc. Not combined, but associated. Ok. Let me look at work to work. Ugh what a clumsy term.
Ok, I finally found it because it's way down on my page, but it didn't occur to me at all that this is the way to do it. Hm. I'll move the section and see what I can do with it. Down so many LT rabbit holes today!! LOL

OMG is that ever kludgy. But I got one to work. Can't say I'm going to jump into this like I expected to, but who knows. Maybe one day I'll have nothing to do.

And thanks for pointing me into a dark corner of LT that I haven't used before. This site surprises me all the time.

Ok, I think I have the hang of it, but wonder about say...Sherlock Holmes. Public domain, so a lot of stuff is inspired by the character and the world, but might not be directly tied to a specific book or story. What would you think the best way of linking the two would be? The Adventures of or something?
9Bookmarque
Oh I figured out how to fix a mistake. Phew.

>8 Bookmarque: Sherlock Holmes stuff that is not connected to a particular story should just be under https://www.librarything.com/character/Sherlock+Holmes but because Sherlock Holmes in particular is such a mess there's also
-Sherlock Holmes (unspecified) - https://www.librarything.com/work/12025086/t/Sherlock-Holmes-unspecified
-Sherlock Holmes (various) - https://www.librarything.com/work/28291764/t/Sherlock-Holmes-various

Ah, that's a good idea. I can do the same for Cthulhu, I suppose. There are some books just connected to the world, not Lovecraft's individual stories.
