Multi-volume work often found as single volumes - needs splitting?

Many holdings of this work are of single volumes because original purchasers bought only the volume covering their location. It's a strange cross between encyclopaedia and business directory, as people paid to be the subject of articles.
We only hold volume 6, but selecting this listing implies that we have a full set. What's the LT way of handling this? Entries for each volume? Entry for each volume plus one for the set? or status quo?

Yes, there's room for both if people are entering both data both ways. What needs to be created is a Series with the 6 volumes as entries and the set under Collections and Selections. it looks like there are also CD volumes? I wonder if they are facsimilies/ebooks of the books, separate reference tools containing the same information or might contain different information?

Was there one publication or were there different editions over time as people paid to be included? I'm seeing at least 1897 and 1906 when I search.

This series page gives an idea of how it can work. https://www.librarything.com/nseries/133703/Encyclopaedia-of-New-Zealand

But not every entry will have enough information to be sure if it's a single volume or a full set, it's a matter of organising what you can and labelling your own volume clearly.

ETA: The volume you linked to needs splitting, since there are clearly two different and one undifferentiated volume in the record, when you click through and look at the editions page: https://www.librarything.com/work/7224073/editions/308029146 None of them are a volume 6.

>2 Aquila: Thanks - a bit of research shows that the six volumes were published serially between 1897 and 1908

Supplementary questions:
1) I've created a series, and I've created a book entry manually for volume 1 (National Library has a single entry for the whole series) - but I can't see anywhere to add the book to the series on the book's edit screen. How do I connect them?

2) Creating entries for the books we don't have adds them to our collection. If I delete them before anyone else adds them, will they vanish? It's no biggie leaving them there for a while - our actual catalogue is in PastPerfect and I'm mainly using LT as a tool to Deweyise the collection.

Series isn't in the Edit form - there's a Series module somewhere on the main book page - it may be folded up - and you can do the adding there, or you can add it from Edit Series> Add to/Organise Series on the series page.

Yes, for the books to exist for the series they have to be in someone's Library. You can always create yourself a "Not Owned" collection for the volumes in the meantime and leave yourself a Private Comment. I find five year later I've completely forgotten when I've done odd things in my library.

Note that as you create more entries, they will have to be separated (on the editions page) becuse the title is over 20 characters long.
