Out of curiosity, and also in case any publishers happen to be watching and wondering how much good advertising they'll get just by putting their book on the list....

The only one I've bought so far is Black Ships, but there are several others that I would have considered if the reviews had been more favourable.

I do want to read Black Ships as well. I also really wanted to read The Arthurian Omen but after having read the reviews of it, I may just try to get it off of BookMooch or PBS, rather than spending money on it!

I haven't bought any but I have received a couple from fellow LTers and from the library. But I buy very few books anyway.

I have bought James Dashner's book The Journal of Curious Letters and found it to be excellent, I also have a couple others on the list I am seriously going to buy.

I have that one here on my TBR pile.

I have 16 former ER books that I've either found through Bookmooch, trading with LTers or from some other source (conference, giveaways, etc.), and one that I bought, Gypsy Tears. I'm glad that I found out about that one through ER because it was a great read and a great addition to my library and I would not have found out about it any other way.

I think the only one I bought was The New Yorkers if I remember correctly

I reviewed Pandora in the Congo by Albert Sanchez Pinol and liked it so much I've just bought his debut novel Cold Skin. Still waiting for it to arrive from Amazon though.

I bought Novel Destinations by Shannon Mckenna Schmidt after seeing it on the list (and not snagging it).

#9 - I just bought Novel Destinations, as well, after seeing/requesting/wanting/not getting it on the list here. And I totally scored; I paid $1 for an as new copy on the used book sale shelf at the library. I have no idea who would discard of it so quickly.

I didn't buy, but I did check out from the library and read Dervishes by Beth Helms, which I learned about through the ER program. I loved it!

I haven't bought any yet, but many of them go on my TBR/to buy list :)

I bought at least two from Amazon that I requested but didn't snag - Unlocking the Torah Text by Shmuel Goldin, and The Writer Within You: A Step-by-Step Guide to Writing and Publishing in Your Retirement Years by Charles Jacob.

I snagged Dreamers of the Day by Mary Doria Russell, and I liked it so well that I bought another book of hers - A Thread of Grace.

I think there are others, but I've just packed up my library because we are moving after twenty-three years in this house, and I'm very distracted with sorting and throwing out stuff. Our new apartment will be wall-to-wall books.

I went out and bought, and reviewed, a copy of How to Find Morels after seeing it was well recieved. I also got a "real" copy of Dreamers of the Day even though I received an ER copy. Not my favorite of hers, but I'm a completist and I wanted it signed. :-)

edited because complete sentences are good to have

I bought Away by Amy Bloom. I went to an author's festival, heard her read and bought a copy that she signed.

I definitely want to buy The Lace Reader and The 19th Wife, but since I don't like hardcovers, I'm going to wait till they come out in paperback...

Frankly, I've not been tempted to pick up anything that's appeared on the ER lists so far.

Of course, this is primarily a function of my not being interested in fiction, so the vast majority of what's been offered has zero appeal to me ... but even the few non-fiction books that I've gotten to review were not, generally speaking, things that I would have sought out to purchase.

I've been lucky enough to get the book I requested in every round but two so far (please note I've only requested books in about half the rounds). One of those -- Anathem -- I will snap up as soon as it's released. I had planned to buy the other, The Enchantress of Florence, but reviews have been rather negative so I think I'll give it a pass.

I flipped through He Said Beer, She Said Wine once I learned that the "he" is the founder of Dogfish Head, and may pick it up in paperback.

I didn't buy it, but I checked it out from the library: Bonk. I probably would have read it anyway, regardless of ER, since I really enjoyed Stiff, but ER brought it to my attention.

19kaelirenee

Bonk, Deep Ancestry and Novel Destinations-one I bought for myself and all three I ordered for my library and will check out from there.

I received and reviewed The Translator: a Tribesman's Memoir of Darfur as an ER selection. Then I bought the hardcover version when I attended Daoud Hari's reading at Powell's, and asked the author to sign both copies.

Bonk and The Enchantress of Florence are on my “check this out” list. I looked at Olive Kitteridge in a bookstore, but did not buy it, as I could not bear the desperation in the chapters I read. I probably wouldn’t have considered any of these titles if I hadn’t seen the favorable reviews.

Books I requested, didn't receive, but have put on my wishlist include Lincoln: the Presidential Archives and Franklin and Lucy. These probably would have been on my wishlist in any case, but the favorable reviews didn’t hurt.

ETA: Found Franklin and Lucy at a discount price, so that is now in my TBR pile.

So far, just from the blurbs on the ER list I've bought:

1001 Events That Made America, My Miserable Lonely Lesbian Pregnancy, 2012: Crossing The Bridge To The Future, A Stingray Bit My Nipple!, Danny Gospel, The 13th Reality, and Becky. I've got 8-9 other books on the "to buy" list from previous months, and once I see if I get a book this month, will probably be adding another 5-6 to it.

I plan to buy several copies of The Wishing Year later this month when the author visits the local bookstore. I received it as an ER book and enjoyed it, so I'm going to get a signed copy for myself as well as a few others as gifts.

Re. #21:

I can't believe that anybody would have actually spent money on 2012: Crossing The Bridge To The Furture ... aside from my rather negative review, I recall that it was universally panned by the ER reviewers!

Btripp,

I didn't have a REAL lot to go on review wise here. Just about all the reviews were posted about the time or after I had already bought the book. All the same, it was something that caught my eye and I thought would make an intresting read.

Edited to add---I just added all the books from this months list to my "To Buy" list. A total of twenty books I can buy now or after they come out

I've borrowed Food 2.0 and Sarah's Key from the library.

On my wishlist (to buy or borrow) are Home Girl, Novel Destinations, The Size of the World (and Silber's previous, Ideas of Heaven) and Names on the Land.

I bought The Somnambulist after not getting a copy from ER. I think that's the only one so far, but there are a few others that I would buy if I happen to see them on the shelf.

27KathyWoodall
Jun 30, 2008, 7:13 am

#26 I also bought a copy of The Somnambulist. I think the only other book I purchased was Black Ships.

Jun 30, 2008, 7:27 am

I bought Have You Found Her and I also asked my local library to order Gardens of Water, The 19th Wife and The Story of Edgar Sawtelle (I think those were all LTER books.)

I've bought Becky and Black Ships, but there have definitely been others on the list that I may yet be tempted into buying.

30littlebookworm
Jun 30, 2008, 9:01 am

Only The Somnambulist. The ER program still has most of its books in hardcover, and I don't really buy hardcovers unless they are steeply discounted. I'll buy more when there are more paperbacks out.

I have bought Black Ships, From Eden to Exile and The End of Mr. Y. I have been tempted by a few others, but when I looked at them in the store I decided not to buy them.

The Somnambulist and Wednesday Sisters but I want to buy Olive Kittredge and Lace Reader and also the 19th Wife.

If you go to the ER library and sort by shared the results give an indication of what has done well with the LT crowd. There are six books with more than 300 copies on LT and it looks like a couple more will top that soon.

Some of the ones with 150 to 200 copies are not as impressive because that's how many ER copies there were. Others with that many copies only had only 15 or 20 ER copies available. Books take awhile to pick up readers and many readers wait for the paperback release before getting theirs. Anyway, viewing the ER library by shared is a way of seeing how some of the books have done over time.

I've bought some and had local libraries order in others but I've lost track of the numbers.

I've got an order in for Earth Inc. by Mike Bollen from this latest batch. The blurb looked so interesting that I know I want to read it.

I bought Firefly Rain by Richard Dansky when I learned that he was an LT author and read about the book.

THEN they offered it on ER, but I had already bought and read it and LOVED it.

So far that's the only one.

I am going to buy Robe of Skulls and Sucks to be me.

38the_hag
Jul 1, 2008, 1:44 pm

I've checked out Firefly Rain by Dansky and the National Geographic one from the library...I have several that I've added to my Amazon wishlist and will buy them in the coming months. I have a very small book budget and a very large wishlist...so it's slow going. I do add on books that I request since I was interested in reading them, I will either buy or check them out of the library as I have the funds (and/or they become available at my library). I try to buy books I REALLY love, so to that end, I'll often try to get a book at the library and read it first to see if I really want to own a copy.

I guess I'm going to have ONE now ... I'm pissed that I didn't get the Christopher Hitchens book ... but since I'm an avid Atheist reader, I'll no doubt end up buying that at some point!

I just purchased Home Girl: Building a Dream House on a Lawless Block by Judith Matloff from Amazon.

I love memoirs and stories about home restoration.

I also just bought another memoir focusing on home restoration titled The House on First Street: My New Orleans Story by Julia Reed as well (not an ER book). I am looking forward to both!

I've put a bunch on my BookMooch wishlist, but I haven't run out and bought any yet. Then again, I hardly ever do buy books retail; I am a Friends of the Library store lurker. This gives me lots of books for my $$$ but keeps me from buying much in the way of new releases.

I just recently ordered Earth Inc by Mike Bollen after seeing it on the list, and then reading some excerpts from the publisher's web site. But who knows when I will get it because amazon.com has been out of stock for weeks now. I also ordered The End of Mr. Y by Scarlett Thomas despite the polarizing reviews because I still think it looks interesting.

I bought Heart-Shaped Box by Joe Hill after seeing it on the list, applying for it, and missing out. I think I grabbed a hardcover off of half.com or something like that for fairly cheap, and I was glad. My review is up, and though it wasn't spectacular or anything, I was glad I'd gotten the chance to read it. This month I'm getting Ghost Radio by Leopold Gout from Harper-Collins' First Look program, and it sounds like it's got a lot of similarities to Heart-Shaped Box, so I'm looking forward to that one as well.

I haven't bought any of the early titles yet, but I'm looking forward to Neal Stepehnson's Anathem after finding out about it through the early reviewers list!

I have ordered several titles for our library after reading the enthusiastic responses of the early reviewers for certain titles. When selecting titles for our popular reading materials, I tend to value the opinions of the reviewers at LibraryThing higher than those at Amazon.com.

I really enjoyed Heart-Shaped Box! I got it as an audiobook and it made great commute listening.
