What do you all think of the movie Becoming Jane? Currently it's been playing a lot on HBO recently. I've seen the movie and liked it. It would probably make a good addition to anyone's Jane Austen VHS/DVD Movie Collection.

I refuse to watch it because of the pervasive sexuality. I think it's disrespectful to Jane Austen. My husband watched it despite my boycott and he didn't care for it either.

Well, I've seen it all the way through once and caught bits and pieces of it a couple more times. So maybe it deserves a second viewing before I give it a final OK.

I saw it in theaters and liked it although it was pretty depressing. Okay- I cried a bit.

I'm not sure what I think about Anne Hathaway. I really would have preferred a British actress. Hathaway did okay I suppose, but I just wonder if it would have been better with somebody else.

I love it! I own the DVD and have watched it a few times. I guess I'm able to separate it from being JA's real truth. There are some parts that are pure fiction and others that are merely speculation. I guess the fiction doesn't bother me so much in my greater enjoyment of the movie (visually lush, humorous, great soundtrack.) And the speculation is the fun part! I like to think that Miss Austen experienced romance and passion in her life.

I agree with you FranklyMyDarling, I loved the movie and own it. I thought it was said and cried, but still in the end I loved it.

I think anyone who has ever read Jane Austen's biography would probably find many faults with the storyline (as I have), but I really liked it, despite all the inaccuracies.
And the soundtrack was fantastic.

I agree. The soundtrack is fantastic! I loved the film and thought Hathaway and McAvoy did a great job. I didn't worry too much about the inaccuracies, as most biographical movies are fictionalized to a certain extent. I thought the screenplay was well-written and there were some beautiful shots. I particularly liked Julie Walters as Anne's mother.

I love this movie hands down, every bit of it even though the ending always breaks my heart. I am not a Anne Hathaway fan and although she did a decent job I think someone better could have been cast but because she did and I adore the movie, I just accept it as is. I am a huge fan of the soundtrack also, I have it on a mix with Little Women (94) and Pride and Prejudice (05) and listen to them constantly when I am doing hw. I love the stories of Jane Austen but for some reason have a really hard time getting into the books, I wish it wasn't so.
