New month, new thread!

What ARCs came into your house in October?

Oct 1, 2008, 4:17 pm

Today I got a bunch...
Guernica showed up finally—with a postmark of August 23 and a note that it included time-sensitive material!

Two books from Tow, Oh, the humanity! and Everything is wrong with you, which I requested from the publisher (there was an article about them in, I think, the Guardian (among other places) about how they're sending out free books to regular people rather than "real" reviewers).

Economic Gangsters, not an ARC, arrived, which was offered to me by the publisher after they saw a review of a similar title on my blog.

The Mighty Queens of Freeville here in Michigan... MiB I'm guessing, as it was left in my door.

When I added it to my library it said I was the only one... I know some of you got it yesterday... weird...

Just wanted to inform all of you ARC junkies out there about a new book called Rocket Man by William Elliot Hazelgrove that will be released in December 2008. I have read and reviewed the book for frontstreetreviews.com so once my review is posted there, it'll be on my blog (http://bookopolis.blogspot.com). The book is a modern-day satire of the American Dream and was actually pretty funny and well-written. I was contacted by the publishers to spread the word, so if anyone wants to find out more info about the book or get the contact info to receive an ARC just PM me. Thanks!!

I just got Testimony by Anita Shreve from Hachette. A hardcover copy, not an ARC, which is what I was expecting. Can't wait to start reading it!

20mint910
Oct 3, 2008, 2:27 pm

19- When you wrote to Hachette requesting that book did they write back at all? I emailed them a few weeks ago and haven't heard a peep. I've never tried contacting them before so I'm not sure what the expect.

The promo pack for Kosher By Design Lightens Up showed up here the end of last week as well... I didn't post it, because it wasn't the actual book... This is the first promo pack I've gotten though, and it's kind of neat. I can't wait until the review copy gets here- I have a good friend who only eats kosher and I'm always leery of inviting him over for dinner. I think he'll have to come over and help me test out a few of the recipes in this book for my review!!

(It's 4:00 and my postlady hasn't come yet!!! I get so antsy when she's late!!!)

Too funny- not five minutes after my last post and the MiB showed up. Can we still call them MiB if they're female? That seems weird...

Anyways- Loosing My Religion Harper Collins proof... I'm in Michigan and it was shipped from New York- looks like it's heading west. =)

Now... where is that mailman...

30GondorGirl
Oct 6, 2008, 4:23 pm

Too funny! If it wouldn't annoy you all I'd whine about late mailmen here every day!!

She showed up with two packages for me. The first is a copy of Who Lied and Said We Left the Garden of Eden? by Daniel Martin. He personalized and signed the book for me, which was a really nice touch!

The second was a bookmark for Project June Bug, which came out earlier this year. I'm not entirely sure why I got sent the bookmark, but it's autographed and will be a nice addition to my excessive bookmark collection. =)

>39 mint910:

Thanks, Alea, for the sympathy! It wouldn't be so bad if the book was just bent and could be flattened out, but the covers are actually damaged from bending them, which I hate. I really must invest in a bigger mailbox!

42mint910
Oct 7, 2008, 4:35 pm

41- I'm scared that one day I'll live in a house or apartment that has one of those tiny mailboxes that are by the front door, the ones that basically only a normal letter sized piece of mail would fit in without being damaged. I hate when my magazines come ruined!

In addition to The Believers, as mentioned above, I also received Hitler and Mars Bars by Dianne Ascroft in the mail today from the author. It's my understanding it's been out for a few months now, but she did send it to me with the sole purpose of reviewing it (I'll also be hosting her on my blog, Reading and Ruminations next month).

Oct 8, 2008, 7:00 am

I live in an apt building with a small mailbox - so I have all my stuff sent to my office - which is in a HUGE highrise in downtown Montreal - the books don't get bent, but I am always on pins and needles wondering if they will get to me at all considering the size of my building.

My mailman is funny: he has now started saying (a little sarcastically as he delivers 3 and 4 packages a week (if not a day) to me: "thank you for using Canada Post".

This week so far, I have gotten an ARC of:

Cross Country (the newest Alex Cross) that got a HUGE squeal from me!!! and

Starve which is a YA novel on eating disorders (something very close to my heart) and not published until 2009.

56mint910

55- LOL at "thank you for using Canada Post"!

57GondorGirl
Oct 8, 2008, 10:03 am

While my mailbox is normal sized, I don't live in the best area... and the crackhead down the street is known to have stolen packages off of people's porches in the past. So, if I know a book is coming via MiB I tend to have it sent to my mother's house across town. That way I know it'll make it. Luckily, I work from home most of the week and have a feisty little Pomeranian who LOVES to greet anyone with a package... I always know when someone is in my yard. =) She's as big a dork as I am when it comes to getting mail. You'd think there were dog treat in every package instead of books...

58montrealgirl2005
Edited: Oct 8, 2008, 6:37 pm

Nitestar--LOL I wonder if your mailman at work is the one who use to deliver to me. (Rocco) He told me a long time ago that he thanked God that no one else on the street had deliveries like me. He stopped doing this route about 2 years ago now. Now where would Canada Post be without us? LOL

Can I ask what MiB means?

I am lucky with the mailman I have now. He nevers jams or bends anything. If it doesn't fit in the box he will put it between the doors for me. I have one of those standard size boxes on the front of my house.

not an ARC...but since I found it here...today I received A Thousand Veils. It seems Mr. Murphy had posted a 'free books' thread here and I requested it. Of course, that was like a whole week ago, so when it arrived today, I totally forgot where it was from. Old, to be getting old...lol

I used to keep a nice list of books requested and received. Perhaps time to go back to that..

Well, anyhoo, when this really nice box arrived, I had to search for where it came from. No sent e-mail requesting it...hmmm. So, I looked on LT and found the post. Solved!
But on the way I glanced at some of the reviews here and on Amazon...wow...I will have to put this one next in my rotation.

Yeah, I had the problem of running out of shelf space as well... I was really lucky when I found my husband I guess... He suggested I take the bed out of the guest room and turn it into my library. Now it has a comfy chair and wall-to-wall bookshelves! Sadly, I don't know what I'll do when those fill up... Somehow I doubt he'll give up our bedroom or office...

My husband gave me our fourth bedroom to make into a library--plenty of shelves and bookcases, a comfortable club chair by a window with a nice view, and my computer for LT and my literary blog. I didn't get a notification for this one, but I got I, Lorelei by Yeardley Smith today from Harper Collins First Look program.

The thing I hate about that program is that it came with a note saying I had until November 1 to read and review it. Now, I like getting the books and all, but I think essentially 10 days is not a long enough lead time for these books. I'm in the middle of something now that I think will take me several more days to finish (Wife in the North for you curious types, and it is not a fast read), and I'm not going to stop reading it to start this one. And I had planned to read something else next, but now I feel like I have to bump I, Lorelei up next on my tbrs, and I don't think that's really fair for HC to expect. I just don't think I should have to drop everything for a book I didn't even know I was getting.

140lovemybooks
Oct 20, 2008, 1:52 pm

I agree. I think you should have at least a month.

141DevourerOfBooks
Oct 20, 2008, 2:11 pm

Their timeline IS a bit unreasonable. If they would actually ship books right away so that people had them before the middle of the month (or, you know, actually NOTIFY people of the books they will receive so they could plan for it), they could expect the middle of the following month. Saying you have from the 20th to the 1st, though, is ridiculous.

I only had one from them that put me in THAT tight of a situation, but luckily it was an upper-elementary book, so it only took a few hours to read.

142bermudaonion
Oct 20, 2008, 3:05 pm

>139 virginiahomeschooler: I wouldn't kill myself to meet a deadline like that. I think they printed the letter before the books were ready and there must have been a delay.

143GondorGirl
Oct 20, 2008, 3:10 pm

I've had a couple books with tight deadlines. One I e-mailed when I received the book and said my review would be a little late. The other I just put a small apology in the intro letter with my review. I gave the date I received the book and explained that the tight deadline was why my review was late. neither publisher complained, and I've since received more books from both, so I think they understand.

Oct 21, 2008, 7:39 pm

Got two more books this afternoon. One was Roads to Quoz, a very nice hardback copy, and the other was a very beaten up and dirty copy of We Can't All Be Ratttlesnakes that was another book from Harper Collins First Look program that I am apparently supposed to review by November 1 (this after receiving I, Lorelei yesterday from them), and again I had no confirmation I was getting it.

I'm getting a little ticked with HC because not only do I only get 9 days to read and review it, but it was obviously damaged before they shipped it (the package is in perfect condition). And, I don't mean it's just got a bent corner (which I do hate, by the way), but it's hardly in readable condition. The back cover is about to fall off, it looks as though it's been folded in half (wet) and then sat on by a dirty elephant for a few days, and it's got some kind of icky black crud on ends of the pages. So, I am now obligated to read and review this book in about a week, which isn't so much of a prize, or I assume I am no longer eligible for the program. What does happen if you don't meet their deadline?? I suppose I shouldn't complain, but really now.
