Today I got a bunch...
Guernica showed up finally—with a postmark of August 23 and a note that it included time-sensitive material!
Two books from Tow, Oh, the humanity! and Everything is wrong with you, which I requested from the publisher (there was an article about them in, I think, the Guardian (among other places) about how they're sending out free books to regular people rather than "real" reviewers).
Economic Gangsters, not an ARC, arrived, which was offered to me by the publisher after they saw a review of a similar title on my blog.

When I added it to my library it said I was the only one... I know some of you got it yesterday... weird...

Just wanted to inform all of you ARC junkies out there about a new book called Rocket Man by William Elliot Hazelgrove that will be released in December 2008. I have read and reviewed the book for frontstreetreviews.com so once my review is posted there, it'll be on my blog (http://bookopolis.blogspot.com). The book is a modern-day satire of the American Dream and was actually pretty funny and well-written. I was contacted by the publishers to spread the word, so if anyone wants to find out more info about the book or get the contact info to receive an ARC just PM me. Thanks!!
17RidgewayGirl
I just got The Believers by Zoe Heller today from B&N First Look. I'm very pleased!
19avisannschild
I just got Testimony by Anita Shreve from Hachette. A hardcover copy, not an ARC, which is what I was expecting. Can't wait to start reading it!
20mint910
19- When you wrote to Hachette requesting that book did they write back at all? I emailed them a few weeks ago and haven't heard a peep. I've never tried contacting them before so I'm not sure what the expect.
21avisannschild
>20 mint910:
I actually emailed Miriam Parker at Hachette and she did confirm she would send me the book. Did you contact her as well?

The promo pack for Kosher By Design Lightens Up showed up here the end of last week as well... I didn't post it, because it wasn't the actual book... This is the first promo pack I've gotten though, and it's kind of neat. I can't wait until the review copy gets here- I have a good friend who only eats kosher and I'm always leery of inviting him over for dinner. I think he'll have to come over and help me test out a few of the recipes in this book for my review!!
(It's 4:00 and my postlady hasn't come yet!!! I get so antsy when she's late!!!)

>27 GondorGirl: I know what you mean. Our mail can come anytime between 11:30 and 5:00 and I've come to envy people who get early delivery.
29GondorGirl
Too funny- not five minutes after my last post and the MiB showed up. Can we still call them MiB if they're female? That seems weird...
Anyways- Loosing My Religion Harper Collins proof... I'm in Michigan and it was shipped from New York- looks like it's heading west. =)
Now... where is that mailman...

Too funny! If it wouldn't annoy you all I'd whine about late mailmen here every day!!
She showed up with two packages for me. The first is a copy of Who Lied and Said We Left the Garden of Eden? by Daniel Martin. He personalized and signed the book for me, which was a really nice touch!
The second was a bookmark for Project June Bug, which came out earlier this year. I'm not entirely sure why I got sent the bookmark, but it's autographed and will be a nice addition to my excessive bookmark collection. =)

36iubookgirl
I received Wife in the North and Veil of Lies yesterday via USPS.
37avisannschild
I just received The Professors' Wives' Club from Carrie at Word to Mouth today and have decided that I must buy a bigger mailbox because my mail carrier bent the book in half to get it into my mailbox. ARGH!
38songbirdz
Missed my MiB by like 10 seconds, the bum. But Where Are You Wearing is making it's way out to people! I'll just have to wait until tomorrow for mine, is all.
39mint910
37- That sucks! I hate when my magazines are torn up a bit, but a bent book, that is not cool! :(
40kaykwilts
I received Dark Pursuit by Brandilyn Collins today in the mail. Publisher is Zondervan.
41avisannschild
>39 mint910:
Thanks, Alea, for the sympathy! It wouldn't be so bad if the book was just bent and could be flattened out, but the covers are actually damaged from bending them, which I hate. I really must invest in a bigger mailbox!

41- I'm scared that one day I'll live in a house or apartment that has one of those tiny mailboxes that are by the front door, the ones that basically only a normal letter sized piece of mail would fit in without being damaged. I hate when my magazines come ruined!
43Kasthu
41 and 42: All I have to say is, thank goodness I have a doorman! He must think I'm running some kind of illegal smuggling ring in my apartment, what with all the packages I send and receive.
44Sensory
I received Downtown Owl today. That's the fastest I've ever received an ARC - just requested it last week.

In addition to The Believers, as mentioned above, I also received Hitler and Mars Bars by Dianne Ascroft in the mail today from the author. It's my understanding it's been out for a few months now, but she did send it to me with the sole purpose of reviewing it (I'll also be hosting her on my blog, Reading and Ruminations next month).
55Nitestar
I live in an apt building with a small mailbox - so I have all my stuff sent to my office - which is in a HUGE highrise in downtown Montreal - the books don't get bent, but I am always on pins and needles wondering if they will get to me at all considering the size of my building.
My mailman is funny: he has now started saying (a little sarcastically as he delivers 3 and 4 packages a week (if not a day) to me: "thank you for using Canada Post".
This week so far, I have gotten an ARC of:
Cross Country (the newest Alex Cross) that got a HUGE squeal from me!!! and
Starve which is a YA novel on eating disorders (something very close to my heart) and not published until 2009.

While my mailbox is normal sized, I don't live in the best area... and the crackhead down the street is known to have stolen packages off of people's porches in the past. So, if I know a book is coming via MiB I tend to have it sent to my mother's house across town. That way I know it'll make it. Luckily, I work from home most of the week and have a feisty little Pomeranian who LOVES to greet anyone with a package... I always know when someone is in my yard. =) She's as big a dork as I am when it comes to getting mail. You'd think there were dog treat in every package instead of books...
58montrealgirl2005
Nitestar--LOL I wonder if your mailman at work is the one who use to deliver to me. (Rocco) He told me a long time ago that he thanked God that no one else on the street had deliveries like me. He stopped doing this route about 2 years ago now. Now where would Canada Post be without us? LOL
Can I ask what MiB means?
I am lucky with the mailman I have now. He nevers jams or bends anything. If it doesn't fit in the box he will put it between the doors for me. I have one of those standard size boxes on the front of my house.

I am sort of thankful that I did not receive an Early Review book this month as I have several ARC's to read and review. I really enjoy good Christian fiction and Brandilyn is a talented author.

85caitemaire
not an ARC...but since I found it here...today I received A Thousand Veils. It seems Mr. Murphy had posted a 'free books' thread here and I requested it. Of course, that was like a whole week ago, so when it arrived today, I totally forgot where it was from. Old, to be getting old...lol
I used to keep a nice list of books requested and received. Perhaps time to go back to that..
Well, anyhoo, when this really nice box arrived, I had to search for where it came from. No sent e-mail requesting it...hmmm. So, I looked on LT and found the post. Solved!
But on the way I glanced at some of the reviews here and on Amazon...wow...I will have to put this one next in my rotation.

I have been blessed by HarperCollins twice this week -- first with Losing My Religion, which was from the CollinsReads list, then with Unholy Business, which came through FirstLook. My husband is starting to make sarcastic comments about this addiction ...
90virginiahomeschooler
>89 keywestnan:
My husband's comments stopped a while back. Now it's just the eye roll with the exhasperated sigh. If only he knew how many books come in and get put on the shelf that he never notices.

91thetometraveller
Unfortunately my books no longer fit on the shelves. The new piles get in the way of walking, so my husband is bound to notice! :)
92GondorGirl
Yeah, I had the problem of running out of shelf space as well... I was really lucky when I found my husband I guess... He suggested I take the bed out of the guest room and turn it into my library. Now it has a comfy chair and wall-to-wall bookshelves! Sadly, I don't know what I'll do when those fill up... Somehow I doubt he'll give up our bedroom or office...
93lovemybooks
#92...that sounds so nice! I wish I had a library!
94sgtbigg
Back when I was single I had a library. Wall-to-wall shelves, a chair, and a lamp. Now I have a wife and three little girls. I like them, but I miss my library.
95gwendolyndawson
My husband gave me our fourth bedroom to make into a library--plenty of shelves and bookcases, a comfortable club chair by a window with a nice view, and my computer for LT and my literary blog. Of course, he got the third bedroom to make into a guitar room for his 15 guitars! So, we're even (and both obsessed with our hobbys).
96GondorGirl
Wow- glad I'm not the only obsessed one!! And aren't we lucky to save such understanding (or oblivious) spouses?
On a slightly different topic- was today some national holiday that I'm unaware of? No one even came to collect my mail today and no one seemed to post books received today...

98montrealgirl2005
It was Thanksgiving Day here in Canada so we had no regular mail, no MiB, no fedex :(
99virginiahomeschooler
DHL delivered Dating Da Vinci by Malena Lott and Pemberley by the Sea by Abigail Reynolds today.
100anysia
>98 montrealgirl2005: Heh, I checked the mailbox today. When I came in my other half looked at me, somewhat amused, and asked what made me think we would have mail delivery today. I don't celebrate Thanksgiving and I get Mondays off every week so I had completely forgotten it was a holiday.
101ThePam
Billy and the Birdfrogs by B.B. Wurge.
The author wrote asking if I would review this. I was wary until I saw that it had a "look inside" at Amazon. So far it's as good as I thought it would be. ((One of the best kid books I've read this year. Maybe for tweeners on up))

Today, I received a very cute picture book - Where's My Mummy. My daughter was thrilled that one of the packages I keep getting finally had a book that she could read, too. Her big brother was more excited about Buggy Crenshaw and the Bungler's Paradox and Buggy Crenshaw and the Deadwood Principle which also arrived today.
103bermudaonion
I received Very Valentine by Adriana Trigiani and Goodnight Bush today. The second one isn't an ARC - I requested it for my 21 year old son.
104GondorGirl
Sarah's Key showed up in my mailbox today. It's a finished PB copy from St Martin's Reading Group Gold. I'd almost given up on this one as I requested it in early August- what a nice surprise! I think this one will get bumped to the top of my list... I'm a huge WWII buff. =)
Oh- it also came with a booklet/catalog of the other SM: RGG books that are out right now- really nice blurbs and descriptions of each book. It was fun to look through.

Sarah's Key came for me as well, though I completely forgot I'd requested it. I have got to start keeping better track of my requests...

I also got Sarah's Key yesterday and have no memory of asking for it in particular. I do remember messing around on that site and choosing something, but it was so long ago - truly months - that I'd forgotten all about it.
115DevourerOfBooks
I got Bitter Sweets today from St. Martin's Gold, so now I don't have to enter Bonnie's giveaway for the same. I've been waiting all week to see if I would get it or I should enter.

Today's mail brought me Sarah's Key from St. Martin's Griffin, a pleasant surprise also, as I had forgotten I requested it.

Today was a banner day- three books and since I was having a appaling day it was a welcome surprise to come home to ... there was: The Ark, the Reed & the Fire Cloud (surprisingly long), greasy rider & Echos from the dead which will be my first read as it is an ER book and will help others decide whether they want it if I can give a review..
121SpongeBobFishpants

It does look like just my thing!
ETA: Checking my emails......found I requested it through Booktagger. They had 200 to send out!

I didn't get a notification for this one, but I got I, Lorelei by Yeardley Smith today from Harper Collins First Look program.
The thing I hate about that program is that it came with a note saying I had until November 1 to read and review it. Now, I like getting the books and all, but I think essentially 10 days is not a long enough lead time for these books. I'm in the middle of something now that I think will take me several more days to finish (Wife in the North for you curious types, and it is not a fast read), and I'm not going to stop reading it to start this one. And I had planned to read something else next, but now I feel like I have to bump I, Lorelei up next on my tbrs, and I don't think that's really fair for HC to expect. I just don't think I should have to drop everything for a book I didn't even know I was getting.

I agree. I think you should have at least a month.
141DevourerOfBooks
Their timeline IS a bit unreasonable. If they would actually ship books right away so that people had them before the middle of the month (or, you know, actually NOTIFY people of the books they will receive so they could plan for it), they could expect the middle of the following month. Saying you have from the 20th to the 1st, though, is ridiculous.
I only had one from them that put me in THAT tight of a situation, but luckily it was an upper-elementary book, so it only took a few hours to read.

>139 virginiahomeschooler: I wouldn't kill myself to meet a deadline like that. I think they printed the letter before the books were ready and there must have been a delay.
Where Am I Wearing arrived in South Carolina today.

I've had a couple books with tight deadlines. One I e-mailed when I received the book and said my review would be a little late. The other I just put a small apology in the intro letter with my review. I gave the date I received the book and explained that the tight deadline was why my review was late. neither publisher complained, and I've since received more books from both, so I think they understand.
145anysia
Heh. I got one from FirstLook that told me I had to have the book reviewed the week BEFORE I received it. I e-mailed them and said I don't do time travel and if I did it wouldn't be to read a book. They e-mailed me back and said I should have gotten a month to review it. :)

Where Am I Wearing arrived in D-Town, Texas and I also received Dirty French from Mini-Book Expo.

Heh. I want to see the review on Dirty French. My one year at a Quebecois francophone school taught me words I didn't learn in 12 years of French immersion. :)

I got Sweetsmoke that another LTer generously passed on.

I got Capitol Reflections (cold request) and Stalin's Children (resend because my copy got lost in the mail in the first mailing) today. I thought it was the postie at the door and it turned out to be the local Jehovah's Witness wanting to give me a pamphlet because it wouldn't fit in the mailbox ... what with the books and all.
Waiting for Where Am I Wearing.

Got two more books this afternoon. One was Roads to Quoz, a very nice hardback copy, and the other was a very beaten up and dirty copy of We Can't All Be Ratttlesnakes that was another book from Harper Collins First Look program that I am apparently supposed to review by November 1 (this after receiving I, Lorelei yesterday from them), and again I had no confirmation I was getting it.
I'm getting a little ticked with HC because not only do I only get 9 days to read and review it, but it was obviously damaged before they shipped it (the package is in perfect condition). And, I don't mean it's just got a bent corner (which I do hate, by the way), but it's hardly in readable condition. The back cover is about to fall off, it looks as though it's been folded in half (wet) and then sat on by a dirty elephant for a few days, and it's got some kind of icky black crud on ends of the pages. So, I am now obligated to read and review this book in about a week, which isn't so much of a prize, or I assume I am no longer eligible for the program. What does happen if you don't meet their deadline?? I suppose I shouldn't complain, but really now.

Did you win the Hachette Back to School Book Contest that included 10 books? I had to do some digging to find out where it came from, but that was one of the books that was supposed to be included, and that's the only place I can think it would've come from. I got my set a while back, and I don't remember it being short a book, but I guess it must have been. That, or they sent another in its place until this one was available.

Jacey - I think it was from the HarperCollins First Look for last month. It's not on their site this month.
Of course, just because I requested it doesn't mean I'm going to get it. First Look is worse that Early Reviewers for having more requests than books to go around.

I got Crafting Jewish and Kosher by Design lightens up yesterday and today respectively, both from Mesorah Publications.
198GondorGirl
Today was a good book day... and surprising!! I woke up super-early to the MiB at my door- with a signed copy of Longest Trip Home by John Grogan. I reviewed the ARC of this a while ago, and I guess they liked my review. =)
Also, I received That Went Well by Terrell Harris Dougan, which is a memoir I'm reviewing for MiniBookExpo. I'm actually really excited about this one, so it might jump to the top of Mt. TBR.
On a side note- PETA sent me some too-cute stickers today... about killing and eating baby animals. Not exactly book related, but I think the baby chicken "I am not a nugget!" sticker will be going on my review notebook.

201: How do you get in touch with publicity at S&S (I'm looking for information for Atria in particular)? Their website seems to be devoid of that kind of information.
207anysia
Unfortunately, S&S has one of the worst sites out there in terms of usability. Every time I go there I end up giving up and getting information about their books somewhere else. They had an ARC offering the other day with ZERO information on what the book was about.
If you have the inside track on S&S, Nitestar, please share! :)

#204, it looks fun. it's a gorgeous book- i haven't made anything from it yet though!
209lovemybooks
I've been contacted by publicists from Atria and S&S but only on specific titles. I wouldn't feel right giving out their contact info, and in a couple cases I was surprised by the way they contacted me (and lack of clarity! ;)
210Nitestar
I have to agree with Lovemybooks. I have been contacted by publishers (not always sure how they found me) who have specifically asked me to mention their names to other bloggers. However, this is not always the case - so unless they tell me to do this, I prefer not to share the full names.
211montrealgirl2005
#208 How did the book come? Just curious so that I know how to expect it.
212Kasthu
209: thanks for the imput! They're a hard nut to crack, I guess. It's just unusual, because you'd think that they'd want to have more publicity for their books, you know?
213mint910
212- I usually go onto publishers websites and give up in about 5 minutes. Even if I find a generic contact email address usually nothing comes from it! :(
214GondorGirl
Today the MiB dropped off Kosher by Design Lightens Up. I was on my way out the door when the truck pulled up, so I flipped through it while the car defrosted... Since I was on my way to the grocery store I picked out a recipe and will be making it as part of my review. And WOW- what a nicely put together book. I'm already very impressed with the layout and pictures.

Thanks 214 & 215 I will keep on eye out for it then. LOL I am sure it will come tomorrow when I am out in the afternoon. Murphy's Law right?
#213 mint910 don't give up. It will happen. I have contacted a few publishers and not all of them reply. I even spoke with one on the phone and he said he would send stuff and that was a few weeks ago. nothing yet. Patience keep at it and it will happen.

At supper time MiB delivered Little Giants of Aberdeen County by Tiffany Baker. Its part of a book tour i believe.

I've had much better luck writing directly to the author especially if you have read some of their other books and say so. I also say I was reading a review and it sounded great. Don't know if that helps but it seems to have worked so far.
