I've just unloaded my dupes, but the previous thread was getting long. Anyone have a treasure to give away?

2aluvalibri
Oct 21, 2008, 5:16 pm

It is not a Virago, but perhaps someone will be interested.
Last Saturday, at a library sale, I picked up a copy of A World of Love by Elizabeth Bowen, only to realize I already have it once I got home and on LT.
Does anybody want to adopt it?
:-))

3marise
Oct 21, 2008, 6:15 pm

Is it a hard cover? I only have a mass market paperback.

4aluvalibri
Oct 21, 2008, 9:44 pm

No, it is not. It is published by Anchor Books, and it is a trade paperback, the larger one.
I had totally forgotten I have a hardcover, first edition......my brain is slightly better than a sieve!

I have the following duplicates looking for good homes:

Belinda by Rhoda Broughton;

The Happy Foreigner by Enid Bagnold;

Cousin Rosamund by Rebecca West;

Pride and Prejudice - Jane Austen (VMC Edition);

Sense and Sensibility - Jane Austen (VMC Edition)(has cracking to the spine (ouch!!) and a little water damage but otherwise ok).

6marise
Oct 21, 2008, 10:42 pm

> 2 Paola, since I have a copy (even thought it is not as good) I think I'll wait and see if someone else might want it.

Oh, mrspenny, may I have Belinda? It sounds delightful!

8mrspenny

Certainly marise - I will get it off to you in the next couple of days..

9janeajones
Oct 21, 2008, 11:14 pm

mrspenny -- could I have The Happy Foreigner by Enid Bagnold? I seem to remember reading Enid Bagnold long ago and would love to renew the acquaintance.

10nmhale
Oct 21, 2008, 11:18 pm

mrspenny, I know I'm new, but I was wondering if you could part with Cousin Rosamund by Rebecca West to me. It sounds like an interesting introduction to VMC.

11christiguc
Oct 21, 2008, 11:22 pm

Mrs P, may I have Pride and Prejudice? Believe it or not, I neither own it, nor have I read it. But I've seen the movie.

12mrspenny
Oct 21, 2008, 11:41 pm

# 9 & 11 -definitely - will send them on their way shortly.

#10 - Of course nmhale - very glad to help in getting your collection underway ..

if you leave your address on my profile page I will send it on its way and I hope you have many happy years of collecting and reading the VMCs..

Christina - I 'm sure you will enjoy P & P - I try and read it at least once a year!!

#5 Oh Mrspenny Enid Bagnold - I remember her from my childhood. Was it International Velvet. Can't find it and the touchstones are not helping.

If I may I would love the Virago copy of Sense and Sensibility. I will give it a good home =)

ETA so sorry I made a spelling mistake with your name mrspenny.

14mrspenny
Oct 22, 2008, 2:29 am

Juliette - It was National Velvet and I wasn't aware that she was the author until now - isn't the depth of the knowledge on this board marvellous - Sense and Sensibility will be off to you in the next few days..the spine is quite creased but I would classify it in good condition..

15juliette07
Oct 22, 2008, 2:35 am

Oh thank you so very much and for helping my memory along. I was just searching and I returned to find you had already replied.

16mrspenny
Oct 22, 2008, 2:44 am

There is good summary of Bagnold's life on the Guardian.co.uk website dated 31 May 2008 by Margaret Drabble..Her writing was in the news in your summer because her play "The Chalk Garden" was performed at the Donmar Warehouse, London during the summer.
Do you know this theatre?

I understand the definitive biography of Bagnold was written by Anne Sebba.

BTW - Margaret Drabble wrote the new introduction for the VMC edition of Sense.

Oooh I will I will!! (I say just catching up on posts). And what good timing, I must commend myself! I've had a bit of an Elizabeth Bowen streak this year. I'd love it aluvalibri! Though I am moving back to the US next week...shall I just wait until I get my new address?

christiguc -- you've not read P&P? That's about as heinous as my recent confession on another thread, of not having read any DuMaurier. Please join me in the naughty corner.

marise, juliette07 - I love the film of National Velvet starring a very young Elizabeth Taylor (the actress, not the author!) Have you seen it?

22aluvalibri
Oct 22, 2008, 8:48 am

Laura, that brings back memories of my childhood.....

23tiffin

christiguc, I love P&P and sincerely hope you do too.

24urania1
Oct 22, 2008, 10:28 am

Christina,

Not read the big P&P! Oh my stars!!!!! What I would give to be a Jane Austen virgin again and be reading all of her works for the first time. Alas, I lost my Jane Austen virginity in the 4th grade. I've not been the same since.

25aluvalibri
Oct 22, 2008, 11:29 am

Ditto as urania said. How I wish I had never read them and had to begin.....what a treat you are in for!

26aviddiva
Oct 22, 2008, 11:35 am

P&P is wonderful, but I think I like Sense and sensibility even better! However I will say it's been a long time since I read it. The only Austen I just didn't enjoy was Emma. *dodges flying figs thrown by angry Austen fans*

I know it's brilliant and all that, but Emma herself is the kind of person who drives me crazy, and spending a whole book with her was just too much (although I did like Mr. Knightley.)

27rbhardy3rd
Oct 22, 2008, 12:13 pm

I agree with you, aviddiva, about Emma. But I'm one of those odd people who feel an inordinate fondness for Fanny Price, who is essentially the anti-Emma. It says something about my own personality, I guess.

28nmhale
Oct 22, 2008, 12:44 pm

I'm with urania and aluvalibri - I wish I could read them for the first time all over again. Jane Austen is certainly one of my favorite authors. Reading P & P when I was a kid totally changed my ideas about what "literature" was.

29Marensr
Oct 22, 2008, 12:49 pm

Oh dear, has Christina been sent to the catching up on your reading corner as well.

Ah poor Fanny. I have always been a fan of Persuasion and the fun of Northanger Abbey

30christiguc

Okay. I'll join Laura in the naughty corner. But I'll bring cookies. :) (And fig bars)

31lauralkeet
Oct 22, 2008, 12:57 pm

YUM! See you there!

32urania1
Oct 22, 2008, 3:12 pm

As for me, I distinctly anti-Fanny Price. She's a little cat that one. However, I have noticed that male readers of Austen invariably have a soft spot for Fanny.

33rbhardy3rd
Oct 22, 2008, 5:37 pm

Urania! Be careful where you fling around those italicized males! You might hit someone!

Fanny Price fascinates me from a narratological standpoint because in many ways she acts as a kind of reader-within-the-novel. She observes and judges, and provides a moral center, but she refuses to act. Emma Woodhouse, on the other hand, is more a surrogate author: she tries to shape the plot.

I'm also partial to Mansfield Park because memory is an important theme in the novel, and I wrote my dissertation on memory in the poetry of Vergil. I also love the novel because I visited, and (for a year) lived near Stoneleigh Abbey, which is the model for one of the locales in the novel (see my guest blogger appearance on AustenBlog).

*End of defensive self-justification inspired by being tarred with my gender!*

I'm in the anti-Fanny Price corner. However I do have a few duplicates to atone for this and my other sins of which I am sure there are many ;)

Two books seek new homes.

Both are orange Penguins, but one has been published by Virago and the other soon will be.

The former is Illyrian Spring by Ann Bridge.

* drumming fingers on table *

Didn't Cariola receive a giant box of Viragos from her PBS friend recently? I seem to recall she was exercising great restraint in NOT opening the box right away. But hey, it's been a week ... throw us a crumb Cariola?

:-)

71Cariola
Nov 7, 2008, 1:34 pm

Yes, and I still haven't opened it, but plan to do so tonight. If there are any duplicates, I will post them, but I did let Mary know in advance which of her books I already owned, so it's not likely there will be any. Sorry! She has been so kind in sharing that I didn't want to ask for duplicates; she is retired and posts books on PBS.

73Cariola
Nov 8, 2008, 11:24 pm

So I do have a few duplicates from the box that Mary sent. Who would like to give them a nice home?

Millenium Hall by Sarah Scott. Green cover with a bit of edge wear bu otherwise in fine condition.

Palladian by Elizabeth Taylor. Cover has some creases and wear and there is a stamp inside the front cover. Penguin edition.

Joanna Godden by Sheila Kaye-Smith. Former library copy, so it has a few stamps and (drat!) plastic laminated to the cover. Black Dial Press edition.

Not a duplicate as such but an original green VMC that I would like to pass on as it is a BookCrossing book, passed onto me by LyzzyBee. Having said that, there is no pressure to pass it on yourself, if you would like for your Virago library!

Cornwall is one of the most beautiful places I've ever seen, Bleu. Even grey I don't think it could be anything but wonderful. Saint Michael's Mount has a library in it with a fireplace, walls of books and two big wing chairs. I thought that even in the dead of winter with a gale blowing, that room would be heavenly.

Fleur, I would have made the time for Penzance if you had been there. As it was we were so overwhelmed with how much there was to see and how little time we had to see things. I was so glad we rented a car and stayed in the countryside, about a mile from the sea coast. I wouldn't have missed the little ports, the hedgerow lanes and the pastoral beauty for anything. And I am so glad you said St. Michael's was worth seeing: it truly was.

Soup, not St. Mawe's by any chance?

Duplicate Copies thread being cheerfully taken over with a Cornwall love-in.

Why, oh why didn't I visit Cornwall during my year in England?

(I may have mentioned this before, but as a Buffy fan, I was amused by the notion of visiting a place called St. Anthony Head).

124Soupdragon
Nov 23, 2008, 3:17 am

Tiffin, I believe it was St. Mawes. You must know the castle then. Quite a grand name for it, more of a fort really, and doing a grand trade in weddings! Well, it was at the time, anyway. Maybe people don't get married in castles so much during credit crises.

Rob, I'm impressed with how much of England you did see in a year. This is embarrassing to admit but I've lived in England all my life and didn't visit Cornwall until I was 34.

And er, yes, apologies to anyone who's reading this post hoping for duplicates!

Oh Cornwall looks so lovely Jane, how could we have not made it to Cornwall when Rom and I were racing around in our little rented car. (I must start keeping a list of things to do when I go back much like my ever growing book list.)

Maren - you would love Minack - it is an outdoor theatre. Many of the stone seats have the names of famous actors engraved upon them! Fleur - it must be about twelve years ago that we visited Cornwall and loved it.

Soup, the castle at St. Mawes is delightful. Just the right size for one person with a lot of books. Maren, oh do put Cornwall on your life to do list. My next trip to England will have a lot more Kernow in it.

I have a BookCrossing copy of Elaine Dundy's The Old Man And Me to share with anyone who'd like it.

It's a VMC but not a green one.

It does have a BookCrossing spine sticker on the outside, a BCID label on the inside front cover and stamps at the beginnning and end, so not for the purist, and although I don't mind what happens to the book once it's passed out of my hands, I would appreciate if the label could stay in, appreciate more if the recipient could pop onto the BookCrossing site and journal its arrival (no joining necessary) and even more if it was passed along after reading.

Here's what I thought of it:
"I enjoyed this more than I thought I would, given the blurb on the back and Bridget's comments. In its slightly naive and disconnected tone it reminded me a bit of Stevie Smith's work, as well as Dundy's slightly better known "The Dud Avocado" and, in the setting, "The L-Shaped Room". The plot was a bit silly and the drugs references a bit shoe-horned in, but it was a fairly convincing picture of a young girl's descent into chaos, and a fun read."

and a link to the BookCrossing entries including back cover blurb and the last reader's thoughts:
http://www.bookcrossing.com/journal/6361439

Happy to post anywhere but it might have to go surface mail if overseas (I'm in the UK)

I have been holding on to these until we were over the Christmas and new year - so I have these duplicates looking for new homes:

The Holiday - Stevie Smith
The Rising Tide - M J Farrell (Molly Keane)
Phoenix Fled - Attia Hosain
Nobody's Business - Penny Gilliatt
At The Still Point - Mary Benson
Silences - Tillie Olsen (Touchstones not working)
Cindie - Jean Devanny
The Odd Woman - Gail Godwin
Regiment of Women - Clemence Dane (Touchstones not working)
Virago Omnibus II

The copies are all original Virago covers;
Nobody's Business is the original cover although it is a later design and The Odd Woman is the modern design.(It is VMC No 479);
The Omnibus Omnibus is a hardcover volume;
A Regiment of Women is not a VMC but is a Virago fiction.

Is anybody interested?

Five VMCs are looking to be adopted. Will travel to find the right loving home:

"Our Spoons Came From Woolworths" by Barbara Comyns
"The Story of An African Farm" by Olive Schreiner
"The World My Winderness" by Rose Macaulay
"Angel" by Elizabeth Taylor
"Tortoise By Candlelight" by Nina Bawden
"Never No More" by Maura Laverty

The first three are original green VMCs and the other two are green but in the later style. All have wear and tear. The Screiner has one heavy crease to the spine and the last two have more lighter creases and all have general handling wear.
