I'm looking for a British murder mystery novel about the murders of a wealthy family in a mansion in the English countryside.
The investigative officer assigned to the case is a former WWI soldier who still suffers from the effects of shell shock (similar to PTSD). He frequently suffers nightmares and nerve seizures.
The victims at the mansion were shot dead. The married couple and their children. There is a mention of a house servant who may or may not be a victim. The murderer is a loner who has an affair with a married woman whom he eventually murders. I think he's also a former WWI soldier.
Some time in the story the investigative officer meets a blonde woman whom he eventually falls in love with and marries at end of the story. I think she is a teacher. A librarian?
It was published between late 1990s and 2004. It may have "River" as part of the title. The book cover is light green- or amber-coloured of a blurred photograph of a stream or river in distance.
I think the author's name is Reginald (not Reginald Hill) or Neville. It's a very British name. In back of the book it says he was writing a sequel. I'd like to read it. I think this murder mystery novel may have been his debut novel. Thank you.
