Group Read?

Is anyone else interested in a group read? Any good ideas for a book?

I am new to the group. But, would be intrested in a group read. If i have any ideas i will be sure to post them.

The Graceling book sounds like a good book. But, I dont know about the Over Sea, Under Stone To, me it does not sound like a good book.

I just finished Graceling. I'd highly recommend it. Great characters and very easy to read.

I'd be up for a read of Graceling but my local library won't have a copy available until early June (if I can reserve it in time!). What time frame were we thinking...I've only attempted a group read before - never actually done one :)

Any other thoughts? How many people do we have here interested?

Maybe we should pic a book that is more readily available. What about The castle Corona by Sharon Creech? I really enjoyed that book although i read it when i was 12 so I don't know how many people will like it.
We could do Some Things That Stay but that one has a couple seens that are R material. Which is really quite a shame. :(
My Most Excellent Year could work well.

I actually just got a copy of Over Sea, Under Stone at a book fair today....but Conner, you said you didn't want to read that one? Miranda, why did you mention it?

I'll see if my Library has The Castle Corona or My Most Excellent Year.

Over Sea, Under Stone for some reason does not apell to me.

I am up for reading anything.

One thing is Some Things That Stay is not at my library

But, i think all other books are at my library.

I was reading about My Most Excellent Year: A Novel of Love, Mary Poppins, and Fenway Park and that sounds like a good book.

Hi guys - I'm going to have to back out of this group read (before we even get started! I know!)
I'll be out of town for the next week helping a hurt family member recover from surgery and will not have access to either my collection of books or my town library :(

Still interested in a YA group read though - hope we can keep this going :)

It may take a week to get enough people anyway so I doubt you need to worry.

There's no rush from my end. I'm ready to go whenever best suits all parties.

Can everyone think of two books they would like to read? (Two is just a suggestion :D)

Also, I've never read any Maureen Johnson but would love an excuse check out her books.

I haven't read the Graceling yet as I am waiting for it to come from the library. I don't think a request has EVER taken this long to get to me! I can't wait to red it though.
I have read one book by Maureen Johnson and I really enjoyed it. It was called the bermudez triangle. About three friends, one goes to a college program over the summer and the other two stay behind and fall in love. It was a good book. I would like to read more by her. So perhaps that could work.
My Most Excellent Year is a fabulous book! I just finished it and actually got to meet the author yesterday. That was exciting, he likes to tell stories.
It seems like a lot of people are interested in that.

Although i don't want to read the dead and the gone or life as we knew it. Those books made me to sad.

I vote for My Most Excellent Year although The Dead and the Gone sounds very intriguing (and I've already read Life As We Knew It, which was a really haunting tale that my family talked about for weeks after we finished the audio book).

I found this good book the other day called Are We There yet. Its only about 200 pages, so it probley is a fast read.

The Secret Hour by Scott Westerfeld was really good. It is are only about 300 pages.

So far it seems like My Most Excellent Year, The Dead and the Gone and Life As We Knew It, are the most popular. I have a book I think would be GREAT, it is called the Memory Keeper's Daughter and it's about a doctor who delivers his own children and one of them has Down's Syndrom. He sends the child away to an institution and then he has to live with this desicion. It starts in 1964.

I'd love to join. Most of the books mentioned are in my TBR pile, so I'm game for any of them!

I think we need to set some sort of date to start the read otherwise this suggestion making will go on FOREVER!!! Miranda, if you'd be so kind as to do the honours, why don't you select the start date and pick a book from the suggestions above and we can get underway.

Of course, if anyone has any strong objections to the above, feel free to say so. We can always choose a different book (or get to the others on the list after we read the first one).

Oh, and Miranda, the Memory Keeper's Daughter sounds interesting. I'd be happy to add that to the list!

The Book Thief is really good! It is sad in some part but over all its a good book.

Sorry for my absence guys. I was away on a trip but I'm back now.
Here is what I've decided to do:
The starting date of the group read is June 6th. This gives everyone a week to get the book. If this is not enough time please say so.
The book I choose is The Memory Keeper's Daughter. Does anyone have an objection to this book or REALLY want to read another book we mentioned?

I've never done a group read either.

I guess it just depends on each person how long it takes them to read. I usually take an average of a week, week and a half if I'm really into the book, only because eating and showering get in my way. :)

What about two or two and a half weeks? Just a suggestion.

I, too, am excited about the book. I should be able to get a copy from the local library. I'm also good with a two to two and a half week reading period.

Bit of a side note, I started reading My Most Excellent Year yesterday and am LOVING it. I totally recommend it to everyone.

So glad this thread is taking off in the direction we want it to.

So, if we do the two to two and a half week period then it'll be the 20th or the 24th. (Sorry Wilow) This will give us time to read the whole book.

I guess we can try different things...we can discuss this one at the end and then maybe our next book we can discuss parts? Again, just a suggestion. I've never done a group read, so I'm pretty excited! Either way works for me. Let me know what you all think.

I think we should have a group discussion a the end of the session and people can post their thoughts here while their reading it if they want to. But actually I will be away on June 24th so lets make it sooner please.

I would vote for a discussion at the end only because I know I would peak at other people comments along the way and might spoil something for myself :)

Just a suggestion -- and since I'm not in on this group read, it doesn't hold much weight . . . but from the way you're going about this, it sounds like you might want to post a non-spoiler thread when you start reading (~June 6th) and then a spoiler thread once people start finishing the book (~June 20th). Happy reading!

I quite like foggidawn's idea of two threads, a non-spoiler one as well as another one for when we finish. At the very least I was going to suggest we start a new thread for the actual book discussion and just use this current thread to discuss the logistics of the group as opposed to the actual books.

Oh, and Miranda, I just finihsed the book about 30 minutes ago. I adore Hucky.

How about we start a new thread called Group Read: Memory Keeper's Daughter. We can keep this current one going for logistical stuff and non-spoilers and we can "meet" up on the new thread on the 20th and thereafter for discussion.
I have never done a group read before either but I'm thinking a new thread with a starting post explianing what we are reading and our time frame would help : )

Does the ReadYA Lit group no longer choose a book to read every month? We used to give suggestions, someone set up a survey on surveymonkey.com, and the top book was the book read for the month.

#65 -- We switched to discussing an author over the course of 2-3 months (right now there's a thread for Diana Wynne Jones), when it seemed that enthusiasm for the monthly read had died down a bit. This group has started afresh, but I think there's definitely room for both, if there's someone interested in organizing both.

There is a group devoted specifically to authors and self promotion called Writer's Brag and Rag Bag.

I have not flagged your post (choosing instead to state my opinions in a post myself) but I would encourage other too if they feel it was inappropriate.

I think she meant unwind by Neal Shusterman. I have read this book and really loved it. I enjoyed most of the authors books.
I would not be interested in Stargirl as i do not like Jerry Spinelli's work and i know I don't like Stargirl.
i would like to do hunger games. i've been meaning to read that for a while.
I also know i don't tend to like Laurie Halse Anderson but Twisted sounds good and I'd be willing to try it.
I also have been wanting to read The Summoning by Kelley Armstrong for a while. Is anyone interested in that?

I read The Hunger Games last month - but had such a profound effect that I would have no problems discussing it :)

Maybe the memory keepers daughter was slow as their was no focus to the discussions. maybe we should come up with some 'discussion' starters like best character, worst character, outstanding scene etc.

Hi all, I would love to get involved in another group read, however i'm in Australia and I just found out today that catching Fire isn't released here till November (was not very impressed about that).
The Graveyard Book sounds good, is that a fairly recent release or has it been out for a while?

Fairywings, I'm also in Australia. I've seen The Graveyard Book while out and about in bookstores. I've also seen a few copies of it on my local library's catalogue. I don't think you'll have too much difficulty in finding it here in Oz.

For the reason fairywings stated above in message 109, I would prefer if we wait a few months before discussing Catching Fire as it will give those group members in other countries time to get their hand on the book (even though I have ordered my copy from the US and it's due to arrive on Monday... can't wait!!!)

I'm more than happy to read The Graveyard Book which has been sitting unread on my bookself giving me the evil eye for the last six or more months, or The Adoration of Jenna Fox which I just borrowed from the library.

Fairywings - I am in Australia too - The Graveyard Book is one of the 50 top reads being promoted by most major bookshops here (Dymocks, Angus and Robertson etc) The public library here in Darwin has it - maybe yours does to?

I have Catching Fire winging it's way to me - I use Fishpond online bookshop a lot - get lots of books not yet (or ever) released in Oz quite cheaply in Aussie dollars :)

varies - if in stock then a week - if it is coming in from the USA then up to 3. But if you order over $50 with fishpond they will send each group out as they come in freight free. I have ordered 3 books recently The White Queen by Philippa Gregory (took a week) Ghouls just Haunt to have fun by Victoria Laurie (arrived 3 days after the first one) and they have just emailed me to say Catching Fire is about to be dispatched - so that will arrive this week sometime.

Booktopia is also quite a good online bookstore in Australia. I have found the prices are often a little cheaper than fishpond. Booktopia offers a flat rate of $6.00 for postage and handling of up to 100 books. It certaintly bumps up the price if you're only ordering one book, but if you order a few, it works out quite economical.

As with fishpond, deliveries only take a few days if the books sre in stock. If it has to come from the US it takes three weeks or so.

Book Depository is another good online store - it is based in the UK, but has free shipping worldwide, which usually makes it cheaper than Amazon (not sure how it compares to Fishpond or Booktopia.) I'm in New Zealand and orders usually take about 10 days to arrive. I'm hoping Catching Fire will be here soon!

I'm sure we can wait to discuss Catching Fire until those interested in the group read are set and ready.

As mentioned by sally...Halloween is coming up, so The Graveyard Book is my first pick, and I wouldn't mind reading The Adoration of Jenna Fox, so that'll be my second. :)

Most everybody seems okay with The Graveyard Book so how about we start reading it on Monday the 14th. That should give everyone about a week to procure the the book.

Does somebody else want to jump in and suggest a reading time frame and/or a discussion schedule. Should we do as before and discuss the book once we finish it or should we try something new and set chapter deadlines and discuss chunks of the book as Pear mentioned in message 105?

To all you Aussie LibraryThingers out there, I just saw a paperback edition of Catching Fire in Big W for around $12 or $13. I believe it was a UK edition. I got incredibly excited when I saw it. I didn't think we'd get it in Australia for a while yet. YAY!

I'm game and I have a few ideas for a book

I'm am up for anything I didn't get my book yet though I just found this group sorry

i got the book

We got the book yesterday, processed it, was about to start it when a student had the temerity to ask for it. Drat! I'll probably have to read it between holds, like I did with New Moon.

Anyway, until I can catch Catching Fire I'm starting The Carbon Diaries 2015. Food for thought for what the world might be like if we don't take heed of the global warming threat.

I still haven't been able to get the book. :( I put in a request and I should be getting a call soon....very soon. Cross your fingers.

BTW I Loved Catching Fire. Just wanted to throw that in, can't wait til we discuss it.

I am an advanced high school freshman in hn english. would you recommend some books for me?

It's been a while. Winter breaks are coming up. Anyone think we'll get back into the group read? I had fun. It just needs a little pick me up. :)

I'm volunteering with the teen and tween book club at my public library. These are the titles they are reading (the tweens):

hey! Shiver!! Any one else want to read Shiver as a group read??

I've read it but could get it back from the library to read again.

I have Leviathan on my TBR list and would love to read that. I've also read The Knife of Never Letting Go, and I think that would make for some interesting discussion.

In another group I'm in that does group reads, we usually take about a week for first suggestions, and then another week for people to 'second' one book each, and then the books with the most seconds go up for a vote. What do we think about a system like that for easy narrowing-down what folks are interested in?

I'd vote for The Knife of Never Letting Go and there is a sequel to that that came out this fall as well Chaos Walking.

Wow! I haven't been on here for so long...I miss the group reads lol even if we don't keep up with them. :( So? Did we decide on The Kinife of Never Letting Go? I'm actually up for anything.

I'm happy to read The Knife of Letting Go. I've not actually heard anything about it but it starts with a "K" and that suits my alphabet challenge.

So, when should we start? It'll be a week or so before I can get the book delivered to me.

Should we start reading as we get the book, and maybe start a thread for it in March? Or is that too far away -- maybe we should start the thread next week? I've already read (and enjoyed) The Knife of Never Letting Go, but are we all pretty much in agreement about reading it?

I just orderd The knife of letting go. It'll probably be a good couple of weeks before I start it though... must not break the rules of my alphabet challenge.

I'm waiting on the book. I think starting the thread in March is a great idea. I mean, it's been a while but it's almost March! That was way too fast! Happy reading everyone.
