Travis and Gabby are next door neighbors who slowly develop strong feelings for each other. In the beginning, "the choice" seems to be obvious....whether Gabby will choose Travis over her longterm boyfriend. But of course, the obvious is not always the answer.
I liked this book, although the ending felt a little too "pat".

Hi, Ippn!
I was wondering if this is your first book to read by Nicholas Sparks? Are you enjoying it? I was at the bookstore about a week ago and looking over all the books that he has written. I was thinking about getting one, but there were so many to choose from I thought I should get advice from LT on which one to start with. Do you have a recommendation?

Billie Jean, I've read a few of Sparks' books, but not all of them. The Notebook was good, and I did enjoy this one The Choice :)

Book #35 Drowning Ruth by Christina Schwartz **** stars.
Amanda is a difficult character to like, much less love, but one can't help but feel some sympathy for her as the story plays out.
Amanda, a wartime nurse in 1919, has burnt out and is exhibiting physical symptoms which are getting in the way of her caring for her patients. She leaves and joins her sister Mathilda, and her child Ruth at the family homestead. Mathilda's husband is away at war himself.
Amanda's relationship with her sister is full of love, but also envy and jealousy. It is her internal struggle with these feelings that is at the center of her story.
Highly Recommended! Thanks to all the LT's who recommended this book, sorry I cant remember exactly which thread I heard about it from.

Oh, I'm glad to hear your positive review of Drowning Ruth! I saw it at a book fair Sunday, and must have picked it up and put it down 3 or 4 times. I knew it had been on my list to read (the one that I lost last year), but couldn't remember anything about it. I ended up getting it, so I'll have to put it on a closer shelf! Thanks!

Hello! Welcome to the group!
I noticed you only gave Kira Kira 3 stars. Why? I loved this book and I love this author I've read all but one of her books and have loved all of them.

#10 While I enjoyed reading Kira Kira, I'm just not that into YA literature. I would have enjoyed the book more if it had been written from the perspective of the adults also maybe? But that is just a personal perference.....

Book #37 Vertical Run by Joseph Garber ****
Another LT recommendation, this book did NOT disappoint.
Dave Elliot shows up, like he does everyday, at the office bright and early.....only to have his boss try to kill him. This story is riveting from the beginning. If you enjoy suspense/thrillers, you must read this one!
I cant wait to try another of his books :)

Book #38 Death Angel by Linda Howard ****
Drea is a rich crime boss' mistress...until the night he gives her to an assassin for the evening as part of his payment.
What follows is a strange and compelling attraction between two characters which you may find hard to like, but will still be fascinated by.
The story feels original, and is fun to read, but mostly I was just relieved to see that redemption was possible with these two characters.

Book #39 Sail by James Patterson ****
Katherine Dunne, a cardiologist, sets sail on a luxury sailboat for a 2month sabbatical with her 3 unruly, disturbed children and her former brother-in-law, leaving behind her new husband of 1year.
At times, I got frustrated with this book, especially after a major characters dies, but what redeems it time and time again, are the interactions between Katherine and her chidren. They go from a troubled family trying to cope with the death of their husband/dad, to a family team, looking out for each others' interest.
I'm a bit torn over the ending, which you'll understand if you read it, but the book was still very interesting to read. If I had to put my finger on the real issue with this book, it might just be that it had too much going on in it.....just the story of the family's trip would have been plenty.

Book #41 Black Out by Lisa Unger, *****
THIS is an excellent read...Annie has the perfect life, a loving husband, wonderful daughter and doting InLaws. Piece by piece however we learn that Annie faces challenges, both in her own mind, and those who conspire against her.
Annie, used to be Ophelia. Growing up with a disinterested father and a needy, self-obsessed mother who falls for a serial rapist/murderer on death row.
The story switches between Annie's present, Ophelia's past, and Annie's future. Who are the good players and who are the bad? This is a book which keeps you guessing constantly. Is Annie just delusional, crazy? Or are the bad guys really "out there"?
Highly recommended.

Book #43 Child 44 by Tom Rob Smith *****
This was a fascinating book! Thanks to all the LT'ers who recommended it.
The story and characters were constantly shifting around. The only drawback for me was that the story got a little predictable towards the end, and somewhat unbelievable. But that didn not keep me from still enjoying it
Highly recommended. I would however advise reading to at least the 50-100th pages before you decide this book isn't for you (for those who aren't immediately enthralled)

I read Child 44 earlier this year and enjoyed it as well. It really sparked my interest in Stalinist Russia, so I've got The Whisperers on the TBR pile. I saw at the bookstore the other day that The Secret Speech, the sequel to Child 44 is out. I wonder if it is as good.

This book came across flat to me, and the author uses WAY too many words to get her point/idea across. Just too verbose; I finished the book, only barely. There were moments of inspiration and words finely put together, but overall I was disappointed.

An excellent read! Tale of time travel for a historian from 2054( i think it was) to 1348...the year of the Plague. Occasionally bogs down in the medieval descriptive sections, but I thoroughly enjoyed reading a story with a unique and well-written twist.

I liked her brutal honesty about herself and those around her, and some of her comments were hilarious..but still I wanted a more indepth autobiography.

Book #59 the 19th Wife by David Ebershoff ****
Two stories intertwine in the book. Ann Eliza's story is told via her memoir and others from during the early years of polygamy in the LDS church @1800's. She is the "19th" wife (supposedly) of Brigham Young one of the founding prophets. Her story tells of her life choices and those of her parents who also lived the polygamist lifestyle.
Jordan's story is that of a "Lost boy", one of the boys expelled from the current day "firsts" or polygamists. These boys are left to fend for themselves at very young ages; Jordan is dropped off at the side of the road by his mom. Cut to years later, and his mom is arrested for shooting to death his Dad. This brings Jordan back home and he searches for what really happened.
I liked this book quite a bit and it got my attention from the get go. It was slow reading for me though by the end, but still a very worthwhile book to read.

Tori Spelling of 90210 fame recounts her childhood, years on 90210, her first failed marriage, and her subsequent second marriage. This book gives the details that Denise Jackson's book It's All About Him lacked. Tori is very forthright about the relationship with her mother, her career, and her part in breaking up her marriage.
If you've seen her reality tv show and enjoyed it, then you'll like the book. You may not like HER, but you'll like the book for it's insights into the rich and famous.

Book #60 Paradise Valley by Robyn Carr **1/2
Written as part of Ms. Carr's VIRGIN RIVER series , Paradise Valley weaves newcomers and oldtimers of this small town.
Rick gets a leg blown mostly off in Irag and rebuffs his longtime girl as well as most of his friends.
Cameron and Abby have a one night stand and months later wind up both in this small town waiting for Abby to have their twins while trying to rid herself of a crazy rock star ex.
I gave this 2 half stars for it's predictablility, but I liked the small town stories and characters and would probably pick up the next installment.

Book #63 A Reliable Wife by Robert Goolrick ***
In the early 1900's, rich businessman, Ralph Truitt sends off for a mail order bride after twenty years of loneliness. Catherine, a beauty arrives, looking not at all like the plain woman's photo she had sent ahead of herself.
so begins a story of love, betrayal, regret, and longing that encompasses Ralph's past with his first wife and the son who left. Catherine is not who she seems to be at all and Ralph suspects this, but comes not to care about her past. He seeks redemption at any cost and relief from his loneliness at any cost.
I was glad, after a story of so much suffering, that the characters still had each other in the end.

What did you think of The Calcutta Chromosome? I read it years ago, and I know I liked it very much, that it was unusual, but otherwise I can't remember much about it.

>59 alcottacre: ty, I've finally hit my groove this year, lol
>60 arubabookwoman: I did not like it as much as you did, frankly I just couldn't get that into a plot that centered around malaria research in the 1890's. I almost stopped reading it a few times, but I did like the characters overall, just not so much the story line.
Book #65 The Hiding Place a Novel by Trezza Azzopardi ***
A story centering around a group of sisters and their family, this was a good read, but I did find it a bit slow going in places. I was torn between rating this one ** or *** stars and finally went with the three. You decide..
Book #66 Knit Two by Kate Jacobs ***
I actually liked this one better than the first book in the series, it continues the tale of the knitting club ladies and life after the death of Georgia.

Book #67 The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins *****
This is the best book I have read in a long time!! I plan to recommend it to all my Twilight fan friends as it kinda has the same feel (no vampires though) but I found it much more engrossing and I liked Twilight a lot.
I read this book in less than a day, totally couldn't put it down! I see this is the first in the series, so I'm off to see if the next book is already out :)
16yo Katniss volunteers for a fight to the death competition when her 12yo sister's name is drawn in the district lottery...she takes her sister's place. She's an easy character to root for as are some of the other competitors which is unfortunate because not every one can survive. There can only be one victor so the rules go....
I had this book in my TBR from fellow LT's recommendations, but the story didnt sound that interesting to me; let me tell you it was, lol, totally enthralling. Read it!!

#62: I loved it when I read it earlier this year and immediately pre-ordered the sequel Catching Fire, which should be arriving at my house any day now. You might want to look for it, too.

Book#68 Foreign Body by Robin Cook **
While I enjoyed the main character, Jennifer, the story fell a bit flat for me. I thought the idea of a murder mystery surrounding medical tourism in India was unique, but unfortunately it fell flat. I think maybe the author should have left out his recurring characters Jack and Laurie entirely and focused more on Jennifer and her beau and on the patients who die in the book.
Book#69 Chosen to Die by Lisa Jackson ***
Regan's a detective with two unruly teenagers and a bad boy lover, who finds herself the latest victim of the Star Crossed Killer. Fairly good suspense story, kinda torn between a two and a three star though on this one

Book #72 The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo by Stieg Larsson ****
This book got off to a slow start and I almost put it down a few times, but I'm glad I did not. There are enough plot lines in this book to write a few books, lol, but the author intertwines them well.
Journalist Mikael is hired to research the disappearance of Harriet Vanger forty years ago by her uncle; this offer comes as he is found guilty of libel against a businessman, Wennerstrom. He goes to live on the uncle's island, drawn in by the uncle's promise to help him get revenge on Wennerstrom. He researches the family members, most of whom are suspect in the girl's disappearance all those years ago.
Lisbeth, hired by the rich uncle to do a background check on Mikael before he hires him winds up working with Mikael in researching the disappearance. She is a girl declared incompetent by the state who works for a security firm as their best researcher.
There is another book out now The Girl Who Played with Fire in which the Lisbeth character is continued, I cant wait to read it as I find her pretty fascinating.

Book #74 The Things They Carried by Tim O'Brien ***
It wasn't quite what I expected after reading the glowing reviews and recommendations, but it was a solid book about one man's experiences during Vietnam.
"Stories are for joining the past to the future. Stories are for those hours late in the night when you can't remember how you got from where you were to where you are."

Book #75 The Girl Who Played With Fire by Stieg Larsson ****
Lisbeth takes off for a grand world tour with her stolen money after love disappoints her. She grows up and finds a new confidence in herself; but the past never stays in the past.
Mikael and his magazine get drawn into a story of the sex trade and corruption, only to find it is connected with Lisbeth's new troubles.
Another excellent read in the series; I was disappointed to find that the author died after turning in the 3rd book in this series. I'm thinking this book will bring in Lisbeth's twin sister and that I will just get mad when I am left hanging at the end of it knowing there will not be another book with these characters..
